Why?Because the soviets should of seen the Manhattan fiasco as a weakness in America and would possibly move in on them,With the Hoax alien I felt not only was it explained better it also showed a much more believible reason for the soviets and the USA to join and repel the 'attack'
I also liked the movie ending more. I mean, the squid made scense in the comic, but not in the movie. I mean, even in the comic book, the alien-invasion plan was kind of all over the place. Also I liked the idea, of Dr. Manhatten, the great savior of America, is actually the biggest threat.
stop saying it doesn't matter, it does. Hollywood scrapes the bottom of the barrel for ideas to make into movies and they've discovered a gold mine with the old comics. I spent 20 years looking forward for Judge Dredd the movie, when it came out i was very disappointed cos they took a million liberties for the sake of focus groups and censors and published a tattered insult of the original. stay true or make up something new. what next? rewriting Shakespeare? or Chaucer?

@CubbieBear1980 I agree with you and Aishra. I do think that by making Dr Manhattan the source of the "menace" the movie feels more rounded, since it has been plotted that he is losing control of himself. It simplifies things in a way that it can fit the amount of time you have in a movie to develop the characters without losing the point, and they put a spin in the story so that even those that love the graphic novel, as me, get to see something diferent and unespected, made in a inteligent way

@darkgammav1 Well, you know in the movie, how he tricks people into thinking Dr. Manhattan is watching them and a threat, stopping the war? In the book, instead of using Dr. Manhattan he engineers a huge squid monster thing and makes it look like an alien invasion and stops the war that way. It's essentially the same ending just with a less silly gimmick to pull the stunt off with (and one which fits better in the overall story, to be fair).
That completely changes the meaning of the book. Dr. Manhattan has godlike powers. Its like saying God is the enemy, where as in the book its completely different. How can you think that doesn't change anything or makes it better?
@darkgammav1 in the book SPOILERS instead of framing manhattan, Ozzy stages a fake alien invasion with a giant artificial squid. Personally I like the film's ending more
To Zach Snyder, the end of the comic boils down to "Ozzy gets away with it". What a dick for saying the fans who "get" the book will like it. That would be if there weren't major philosophical differences between the book and the movie.
I can't imagine a better translation of that comic than the one Snyder did. He really paid attention to the point of the story-- not just the action and the costumes.
You have to change things to make a film, but changing anything ruins it. The book was designed to prove the relevance of the media of comics. The culture of Hollywood blockbusterism is what bothers me.
Bottom line is there will always be restrictions on a movie adaptation, regarding holywood and its money churning , pop-corn culture. regardless this movie is a great advitisment for the novel!.
I couldn't take my eyes off the movie when I put the dvd in, I was glued, my eyes were popped out of my head through out and roarschach was a badass, he was scary lookin!
Snyder changed the ending, but I think it fits. Personally, when i read the novel I wasn't sure if I was supposed to laugh or not when the giant squid showed up. I love the graphic novel, it was way ahead of its time, imitated but never outdone. But the squid almost ruined the harsh reality and gritty universe that had been detailed in the pages preceding it. I like the movie ending better. It makes more sense. If you had the squid in the movie all you'd get is laughs and confusion.
Dr.Manhatten wasnt Extra - Terrestrial? I mean jesus he was compared to God for christ sake. That would be more of a reason to fight back. I'm not pissy i'm just asking
No, he was the result of a radioactive experiment. It may have confused people, but in the end he was no more than a silent watcher, not a threat. Veidt needed something that would unite the planet, not separate it, like Dr. Manhattan did.
I have to agree with Snyder on this. It's about Ozy creating world peace based on a lie......it's not about a giant squid. Dr. Manhattan was plenty strange enough for ppl the world over to be horrified by such a being systematically destroying several major population centers in a random act of extermination. The squid got the idea across in print, but it wouldn't have worked on film. JMO.
the point mainly is that Snyder should've keeped his hands off the plot and script, because it's LITERATURE. Instead, he missed so many points of watchmen it's like he's never read it.
Why rewrite something that has been praised for it's depth and writing? I'll tell you why, to turn it into an action flick with many slow motion scenes.
Watchmen was NOT a Hollywood blockbuster hence THIS was not Watchmen, this was a cheap ripoff.
It's nothing that hasn't been done to countless novels and comics that came before and since. If anything, he did alot better than most print to flim conversions do. Doesn't diminish the GN any, whether you like the film or not. Don't see why so many fanboys are bent out of shape about it. I enjoyed the GN, I also enjoyed the film. Maybe I don't take this stuff as seriously.....I dunno.
The march relase date? Didn't kill 300. But then again, this would've probaby done better in the summer
The marketing needed to be more about the fact of the killer of costumed heroes
Snyder, didn't do a shot by shot. There are scenes of the novel that are NOT in the movie. And he took some liberties. Fight scenes. Special Effects. Etc.
And 300 type slow mo and over the top violence? Agreed. Dark Knight got the violence right. 300's worked well for it's style. But Watchmen is more realistic
1 - The extended directors cut has the missing scenes but was cut to make it shorter.
2 - The slow mo fight are because its a graphic novel. This is why 300 has the same effect. Its using the comic stills as way points and speeds up in between.
Fair enough. I haven't seen the director's cut though! Does it have the ending? Or more scenes from the book? Have you seen it? Or anyone seen it?
And I suppose the fight scenes worked with slow mo, but at the same time, might be a little over the top, such as Ozzy flying into the air and crushing Nite Owl's gun
solution found out of your two comments my friend, more plot , less punching and silly scenes that nobody will ever laught with and more fucking plot, that is by its own a masterpiece, ( but what am i saying this wasnt going to work either BECAUSE WATCHMEN WAS MEANT TO BE A COMIC BOOK ! not a way for some assholes to make money out of other peoples works)
My two cents: People seem to think comic book adaptations are something for kids so adults (uniformed/stuck up ones) wouldn't watch this, and kids who wanted to watch it couldn't beacuse of the R rating. Besides I know of a lot of people who expected the Xmen and The Fantastic Four and came out disapointed since there was more politics and understanding of the human mind here than action, so they thought it was bad and gave it a bad reputation for not understanding the nature of the material.
The children. A movie that is full on "R" is bound to be not seen by children. If the children don't really want to see it, then the adults won't want to see it.
I was so pissed off when I saw how that bastard changed the ending. And then I was even more pissed off when I kept thinking about it and realized that it makes sense. Bastard. I still think the original should have been kept. It was so unpredictably brilliant and far fetched that it couldn't be called anything less than perfect.
i like how the whole movie jon talks like hes a superior alien or something. he was only a human. locked inside a microwave. if you ask me hes arrogant.
Also, I found the movie to be a tad confusing. There were some parts I wouldn't have gotten had I not read the book. Like when Jon went to Mars. In the movie he just "left" and you didn't find out where he'd gone until after his origin speech.
I loved the ending in the book, yet I also loved the ending in the movie. Although It would ahve been cool to see the squid, the ending is about Ozymandias getting away with what he did. and the Dr. Manhattan cover up was just a different way to get the same result. In the end I think it worked perfectly. Unfortunately, movie studios decide to change things that end up fucking up an otherwise good movie, but that's not the case here.
If I have any complaints of the film, it has to do with the music. There was just too much, and (with the exception of the opening) the music was all too cliche.
ya, a giant super alien squid created by a group of science fiction writers held hostage on an island that is so horrifying that drives people insane and kills everyone with a psychic mind blast makes more sense.
No, at the time Ronald Reagan made a infamous speach on how the peoples of the world would set aside their differances if we faced a alien threat.
At the time the "Star Wars" anti defense missle program was being contemplated. This military program was spearheaded by economist/statesman Larouche.
I loved the GN and I loved the film, it was adapted very well. I didnt care like many other people about the squid I instead perfered the ending without it. Its a shame Watchmen didnt acheive the numbers it was hoping for but I've seen it 3 times already so I have done my part. and I do plan on buying the directors cut DVD
If anyone does the Akira movie, it should be him. He has a way of getting really close to the actual book. Sure there were differences, but I read half of the book and didn't notice many changes.
Not necessarily, Rorschach's Journal was given to the editor of the New Frontiersman, a fringe conservative small audience weekly paper. Not only that, but the world adores Ozymandias and think that Rorshachs nutballs. I'd predict that Viedts being guilty for the whole thing, wouldl just end up another conspiracy theory.
Yup, this is what i think it means. Just like the tons of conspiracy theories out there, Rorschach's story would end up as one of those conspiracy theories too that no one takes seriously.
Also to note Rorschach was obsessed with conspiracy theories and no one would take him seriously. Esp his theory about someone killing off all the costume heros...
This is scary if u read this this far u will die in 10 days if u dont send to any 15 videos in 2 hours good luck hope u dont die !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
The one thing I wished was in the movie was the friendly banter between bernie and bernard. I didn't mind the change of the end since it had a "the day the earth stood still" feel to it (the original).
that goes against whole mentality of rorschach. he was upset because everyone submitted to fate but him. his ideology stuck through the end while others' changed their minds and were no better than puppets.
Rorschach and Veidt are the only two main characters who don't compromise on their ideas in the end. He could have lived and revealed Veidt's scheme if he lied to Jon, etc. But he didn't because he couldn't.
Comedian was right. Comedian was right. Comedian was right. Comedian was right. Comedian was right. Comedian was right. Comedian was right. Comedian was right. Comedian was right. Comedian was right. Comedian was right. Comedian was right. Comedian was right. Comedian was right. Comedian was right. Comedian was right. Comedian was right. Comedian was right. Comedian was right. Comedian was right.
I love this guy. Dawn of the Dead? Awesome. 300? The only overtly homoerotic movie I'm not embarrassed to like. Watchmen? Flawed, but the best try I've ever seen to faithfully reproduce a beloved comic book.
Plus he lets his beard grow. That's a real man right there.
The world doesn't change. That's the point, as Dr. Manhattan pointed out, "it never ends." Adrien temporarily solves the worlds problem. But disagreements and discourse will always be a problem. Humans will continue to kill eachother..Comedian was right.
Nobody in there was sane. Rorscharch was a neoconservative. A neoconservative hero in a decidedly humanist book - just awesome.
Rorsharch was a fucking mess, and Moore himself said he had a deathwish. But he's has a good heart - evil reactions to good emotional reactions. Except maybe Dr. Manhatten, but then you have to ask "compared to what?"
No the ending isn't about it being Ozymandias's fault its how Rorschach doesn't die in vain and his message may be let out by the press and he doesn't in a way get away with it. I haven't seen it but now I'm almost to scared too, that and I'm too poor to see it.
WOW Bullshit how can the fact that half of New york getting destroyed end it? The WHOLE part of the book is showing how Ozymandias, in way DOESNT get a way with it since that guy gets to choose which crank file he goes for and reaches for Rorschach's journal.
Whether is was the giant squid (aka alien attack) or the movie ending with Manhattan's powers destroying NY, the journal would revile it being Ozymandias' fault either way.
why? ozymandiaz is the smartest man in the world, who using science can pin-point when to kick you, how to do it, and where so that you do not get a chance to attack him....
The point of Rorscach's death was to make sure his plan worked. He died, because he gave the press the Journal and it's implied they read it- But yes, Rorschach also was dying due to his acceptance that he can't fit the world into his classified, White-Black Symmetry. Any other ending wouldn't have made sense.
Rorschach never compromises, To go a long with Ozy's plan would have been to compromise and enter one of those grace zone Rorschach doesn't believe in. Because he was unable to compromise he had to die.
this movie is all about WHAT IF... IF ONLY... this happened. we have to admit it, amerika lost the vietnam war. Why? just purely businesss for those who benefit from the war... nothing personal.
a smile leads to a laugh a laugh leads to a high 5 a high 5 leads to a hug a hug leads to a kiss a kiss leads 2 a finger a finger leads to a hand a hand leads to a lick a lick leads to a suck a suck leads 2 a fuck.right after u read it, something good will happen at 2:25 tomorrow. I was worryied about the ending being changed from the gn, but my fears went away when i saw what Zack done, the Manhattan ending is a much better ending imo , even though i like the gn ending to. My worrys were that Ozzy would be killed off and wouldnt get away with it.
Looking forward to the directors cut extra 30 mins added and then later the Ulimate edition with the black freighter added in making it a 3 1/2 film, wooh ho
the ending was way way better and more believable, firstly if they stuck with he giant squid, it would be anti climactic for movie standards, a) if manhattan doesnt help and stays on mars its jsut boring b) if manhattan does come back and does help its 5 seconds of him blowing it up, the end. but this way u keep in sync with the story, the people gradually see manhattan become detached and angered at them, so an attack seems plausible
I read Watchmen from start to finish in one sitting. I wouldn't call myself a "fan", but I liked it overall. The ending seemed so random though, "psychic squid destroys half of New York." Lol, REALLY?
Watchmen would have had to been split into two or maybe three films to stay completely with the comic. I think the movie did a great job in making changes that still kept the same basic story.
i liked the movie ending, if people that had never read the book sunndendly see a "giant squid" they would go wat the hell?
i don get the fanboys..u say you didnt like the movie because it was completely page-to-screen and nothing new, then they add some cool action scenes and change the ending to make it a MOVIE ending and you say it was crap and didnt follow the comic...
in the comic noone get teir arms cut off with an angle grinder. the coment about not rorsachs coment after burning the inmate was writnen in the anylists journal
he threw peper in the face of the swat team. the accident in the collider was much more dramatic and sad in the comic. in the comic he chains the kidnapper to the stove and offers huim a hack saw to cut his own arm of.
Rorshach does fight the swat team, opens the head of the kidnaper with a butchers knife and goes to prison. The accident was in the movie. The alien being transported wasn't in there, because they altered the ending, wich might have pissed off people but I thought it had a better flow like that and didn't damadge the story. I think that they took great care and most of the movie was made of frames in the comic. Don't think you could get the whole story without reading the comic though.
I dunno, I wasn't too bothered - I had many a beef with the film, but the mechanics of Veidt's plan wasn't a change that bothered me. Sure I prefer the comic book ending but the comic's a long, carefully paced story with the space for the characters to breathe and the story to build to the conclusion it does.
The film, for better or worse, was an action-packed superhero flick which eschewed most of the depth and breadth of the comic to be a tighter, more compact blockbuster.
Haha, you're funny. The movie was three hours WITHOUT all the hints and backdrop involving the original ending (which, while FABULOUS is incredibly convoluted). I raged about the ending getting changed till I saw the movie and realized the alteration was not at all that bad.
yeah. so dont make the watchmen movie then, make up your own lame ass super hero story, call it the clockmen. have profeser brooklyn and make your own dumb ending that could be communicated with one effects shot and NO drama.
Nah,The Squid was better.
Why?Because the soviets should of seen the Manhattan fiasco as a weakness in America and would possibly move in on them,With the Hoax alien I felt not only was it explained better it also showed a much more believible reason for the soviets and the USA to join and repel the 'attack'

The book is freakin' phenom!!!

WalkenTheWalk 2 years ago
No, he was the result of a radioactive experiment. It may have confused people, but in the end he was no more than a silent watcher, not a threat. Veidt needed something that would unite the planet, not separate it, like Dr. Manhattan did.
Ptrrrrrrrr 2 years ago
I have to agree with Snyder on this. It's about Ozy creating world peace based on a lie......it's not about a giant squid. Dr. Manhattan was plenty strange enough for ppl the world over to be horrified by such a being systematically destroying several major population centers in a random act of extermination. The squid got the idea across in print, but it wouldn't have worked on film. JMO.
razorfett147 2 years ago
the point mainly is that Snyder should've keeped his hands off the plot and script, because it's LITERATURE.
Ptrrrrrrrr 2 years ago
It's nothing that hasn't been done to countless novels and comics that came before and since. If anything, he did alot better than most print to flim conversions do. Doesn't diminish the GN any, whether you like the film or not. Don't see why so many fanboys are bent out of shape about it. I enjoyed the GN, I also enjoyed the film. Maybe I don't take this stuff as seriously.....I dunno.

Snyder has no idea what he's talking about. How did this idiot get in charge of a film?
rawisericho 2 years ago
The march relase date? Didn't kill 300. But then again, this would've probaby done better in the summer
The marketing needed to be more about the fact of the killer of costumed heroes
Snyder, didn't do a shot by shot. There are scenes of the novel that are NOT in the movie. And he took some liberties. Fight scenes. Special Effects. Etc.
And 300 type slow mo and over the top violence? Agreed. Dark Knight got the violence right. 300's worked well for it's style. But Watchmen is more realistic
Stryder687 2 years ago
Realistic? With all 800 compound fractures?
rawisericho 2 years ago
Man that is a silly comment about snyder.
1 - The extended directors cut has the missing scenes but was cut to make it shorter.
2 - The slow mo fight are because its a graphic novel. This is why 300 has the same effect. Its using the comic stills as way points and speeds up in between.
The rest i agree with.
madman778 2 years ago
Fair enough. I haven't seen the director's cut though! Does it have the ending? Or more scenes from the book? Have you seen it? Or anyone seen it?
And I suppose the fight scenes worked with slow mo, but at the same time, might be a little over the top, such as Ozzy flying into the air and crushing Nite Owl's gun
Stryder687 2 years ago
I watched that night, i think its better than the original. The plot is stronger and it explains a lot more as i haven't read the complete novel.
I think synder did the perfect job
madman778 2 years ago
solution found out of your two comments my friend, more plot , less punching and silly scenes that nobody will ever laught with and more fucking plot, that is by its own a masterpiece, ( but what am i saying this wasnt going to work either BECAUSE WATCHMEN WAS MEANT TO BE A COMIC BOOK ! not a way for some assholes to make money out of other peoples works)
FoKisx 2 years ago
My two cents: People seem to think comic book adaptations are something for kids so adults (uniformed/stuck up ones) wouldn't watch this, and kids who wanted to watch it couldn't beacuse of the R rating. Besides I know of a lot of people who expected the Xmen and The Fantastic Four and came out disapointed since there was more politics and understanding of the human mind here than action, so they thought it was bad and gave it a bad reputation for not understanding the nature of the material.
Paonk 2 years ago
The children. A movie that is full on "R" is bound to be not seen by children. If the children don't really want to see it, then the adults won't want to see it.

I loved the ending of the book. And while I don't like the fact it was changed in the movie, I wasn't really surprised.
Tieaiel 2 years ago
Also, I found the movie to be a tad confusing. There were some parts I wouldn't have gotten had I not read the book. Like when Jon went to Mars. In the movie he just "left" and you didn't find out where he'd gone until after his origin speech.
Tieaiel 2 years ago
I get Zach's reasoning here, but really the squid would have been cool to see in film
chipman5544 2 years ago
I loved the ending in the book, yet I also loved the ending in the movie. Although It would ahve been cool to see the squid, the ending is about Ozymandias getting away with what he did. and the Dr. Manhattan cover up was just a different way to get the same result. In the end I think it worked perfectly. Unfortunately, movie studios decide to change things that end up fucking up an otherwise good movie, but that's not the case here.

If I have any complaints of the film, it has to do with the music. There was just too much, and (with the exception of the opening) the music was all too cliche.

Rorshach's Journal, in the book, is the weapon that would bring down Ozymandias.
Remember the poem, anyone? "Look upon my works, ye mighty, and despair!"
The poem depicts the aftermath, where someone DID in the past, and there's nothing left but his broken monument.
For Adrian Veidt, the revelation of the Journal, dead-dropped to the New Frontiersman before his final mission, will lay waste to Ozymandias' dream.
Look Upon My Works, Ye Mighty... And Despair.

Not necessarily, Rorschach's Journal was given to the editor of the New Frontiersman, a fringe conservative small audience weekly paper. Not only that, but the world adores Ozymandias and think that Rorshachs nutballs. I'd predict that Viedts being guilty for the whole thing, wouldl just end up another conspiracy theory.
alienman909 2 years ago
Yup, this is what i think it means. Just like the tons of conspiracy theories out there, Rorschach's story would end up as one of those conspiracy theories too that no one takes seriously.
Also to note Rorschach was obsessed with conspiracy theories and no one would take him seriously. Esp his theory about someone killing off all the costume heros...

No the ending isn't about it being Ozymandias's fault its how Rorschach doesn't die in vain and his message may be let out by the press and he doesn't in a way get away with it. I haven't seen it but now I'm almost to scared too, that and I'm too poor to see it.
CutMESilly 2 years ago
WOW Bullshit how can the fact that half of New york getting destroyed end it? The WHOLE part of the book is showing how Ozymandias, in way DOESNT get a way with it since that guy gets to choose which crank file he goes for and reaches for Rorschach's journal.

Whether is was the giant squid (aka alien attack) or the movie ending with Manhattan's powers destroying NY, the journal would revile it being Ozymandias' fault either way.

Straight up, this movie rocked,
the ending was way way better and more believable, firstly if they stuck with he giant squid, it would be anti climactic for movie standards, a) if manhattan doesnt help and stays on mars its jsut boring b) if manhattan does come back and does help its 5 seconds of him blowing it up, the end. but this way u keep in sync with the story, the people gradually see manhattan become detached and angered at them, so an attack seems plausible

willpreston 2 years ago

KataAnimata 2 years ago
Haha, you're funny. The movie was three hours WITHOUT all the hints and backdrop involving the original ending (which, while FABULOUS is incredibly convoluted). I raged about the ending getting changed till I saw the movie and realized the alteration was not at all that bad.
