So often troublemakers get defended. Well, when most people hit rock bottom there's nowhere left to go but up... but still there are those that only drag others down to be with them.
good lord. when i look at the top comments on these kinds of videos, i'm looking for some kind of intelligent discussion about the film, not a quote from what i finished watching eight seconds ago.
@MicrophoneFarmer I long abandoned hope of intelligent discussion on you tube threads, I'm touched by your optimism.
Just finished watching it for the first time. Tough going. Well acted mind. The consensus seems to be that this film is a critique of "conformism" in 50's America, and an exhortation to "follow your dreams", or some such. If anything it's the reverse in my view. A forboding glimpse of what the 60's "revolution" will bring: fractured families, hedonism, abortions, mental illness..
@Mrfriendlymilk lol! People don't make movies 50 years later to foreshadow what might happen 40 years ago. The issues raised in this movie are still relevant today. Good job dismissing the issues raised.
...Of course it could just be seen as a nuanced portrait of the lives of one tragic couple, although the title suggests the author is seeking to make a wider point about changing social attitudes.
How's that? better than parroting inconsequential bit of dialogue. "Lol".
I felt so sorry for Frank. he obviously still believed in their realtionship and I know what he was going through when she went away, I think he's perfect besides the fact that he cheated on her.
@JBeliberLover143 It is the son of the couple that is visiting April and Frank - not April's brother. Not sure why you found it confusing - it's very clear in the movie.
love this film... i can totally relate to why they feel trapped in their lives (mainly april) cannot wait until i have finished school and can leave england.
Michael Shannon, is awesome. He's maybe a bit typecast as a repressed, paranoid crazy guy, but he's so good at that, it's amazing. He would be the perfect actor for a protagonist in a movie based on the works of Lovecraft or Kafka. This scene rules. I love how just when he's supposed to go away he comes back and makes even more awkwardness!
Frank/Leo: "NOT WELL MY ASS. I don't give a damn if he's SICK, OR WELL, OR DEAD OR ALIVE, he should keep his FUCKIN' opinions in the fuckin' INSANE ASYLUM, WHERE THEY BELONG!!!
This the best scene I have ever seen, because it tells the true about our society and how everybody wants what society sees as normal and the American dream. You know the big house, the boy and girl, the housewife totally programing us from what we truly want or want to do with our lives.
@marfak1000 I am not that well informed of the best actors right now in the us, but ill have to take your words for it. I will rent it when i get the time. Cheers mate
"You must give him a pretty bad time if making babies is the only way he can prove he's got a pair of balls". God, that made me laugh! And seeing Leo/Frank's reaction too :P
@MSGSlayer1 Also she aborts their child as well as neglect their other children. I understand it is just a movie but things like this happen in real life and seriously it's so annoying when the guy gets all the blame.
And if you watch this movie properly, she gets it on with Milly's husband. She is just as much to blame as Frank, if not more for being such a nagging, annoying bitch towards him.
@BabyxiM I'm not saying it's all Frank's fault; it just irks me to see one person attack another while denying his own shortcomings. I'm just finishing the book for the second time, and since you brought it up, Frank doesn't want the baby any more than April does, though he decides that they would keep it anyway.
@texasB666 I actually hated April. The two major wrong moves he made were losing his temper and having that affair, yet she did most of the nagging and treated him like crap. She seemed only happy with him when she got her way. It's interesting to see just how much she was in love with him when he first agreed to go to Paris. And she made the decision HERSELF to abort their baby and leave them, not the other way around. Nobody makes anybody do anything.
@Liddokittyxx Back in the 50s, smokers or medical experts weren't aware the harm and dangers of smoking. My grandmother from Spain, a heavy smoker and lived to be 96, told me about it.
I actually hated Frank. (Not the actor offcourse.) What a slimy little shit. To scared to live to his fullest potential. He caused the death of his wife. Great movie & great novel!
@amandadelcarmenmusic Yeah, he's really good at that. He's been doing it for years, "Marvin's Room", "Basketball Diaries" and BLAH BLAH BLAH, it's a great actor. I dislike that he doesn't have an Oscar.
@Retrostar07 Yeah, I kinda thought so too. But I see so much determination in him, he seems like he really loves getting into deep characters and I praise him for that. But not my favorite.
@Retrostar07 No he is a great actor!. And he isn't overated, if anything he doesn't get enough credit for his movie roles and was more popular in the 90's than he is now.
I just love him and you must be absolutely insane.
I didn't knew Shannon before he was announced as General Zod. But looks like the guy can act like a big son of the bitch, so I think he's great for the role.
i dont care what anyone says , this could be the worse film on the planet , but Leo and Kate are the ones who make this film a win .. two mind blowing performances.
@Falstaff85 No. John Nash was. But this guy is just straight honest and don't know how to act on public by ethic rules. He may have emotional problems at most, and that's about it. I honestly would like to have a friend like that. He would be telling me where I'm wrong on my way ))). Cause we sometimes don't know ourselves.
Kate Winslet doesn't say a single word in this scene and yet you can feel every single emotion of hers and understand every thought... what a performance!
@tinie15 I was mad as hell at her!! She sat there while that jerk ran down her husband and was interfering in their marriage??? Regardless of what she feels about her husband and her marriage, a decent wife would have stood up and said "don't talk that way to my husband, you don't know what you're talking about! Now sit down and shut up!" In PUBLIC, you defend your spouse's honor. When they were ALONE, she could privately discuss her concerns about their relationship, etc..
@GeorgiaKev My dear Georgia, I'm afraid you have missed the point of the film... She hated being the "decent wife", in the "decent home", with the "decent family". Her biggest dream was to escape all that. That was what her husband took away because of pure fear. Sadly the guy knows exactly what he is talking about. He speaks the truth, that's why she doesn't respond and the husband is angry...
@tinie15 If she didn't want to have a "decent family" then why did she get married in the first place? Dreams are good, but you have to use some common sense in deciding whether or not to pursue them. And if pursuing a particular dream is destroying your marriage, it's probably a good sign to drop it. Personal dreams should not be pursued at the expense of your family.
@GeorgiaKev It was a dream they both shared, remember? He betrayed it. I think we have fundamental differences on our views on marriage, family, dreams and even decency... let's just agree that we disagree, ok? :o)
@tinie15 I admit I'm a bit biased given that my marriage collapsed less than 2 years ago. Although the problems in my marriage were nothing close to what they were going thru in this movie, this scene stirred some bitter memories for me. However, I cannot accept the notion that Frank was totally in the wrong here. For April to say to him (in the next scene) "I hate you, you were just a boy who made me laugh at a party once and now I loathe the sight of you", was cruel and unforgiveable.
I haven't seen much of Shannon's stuff, and I saw him in an interview about playing Zod in the new superman movie. That's why I'm watching this, to see a good performance from him.
Who's crazy? The honest man who see's the world as it is or the people too lazy to revolt against it? Perpetual revolt can be tiring though....trust me, and, you may in fact end up in jail or the loony bin because of it. The funny thing is, in the end, I have ended up envying my family suburban friends lifestyle and they mine. The grass is always greener on the other side....until you get there.
My personal opinion, but I thought his role deserved the oscar, Heath Ledger was fantastic, but it was an atonement win, Michael Shannon was actually realistically compelling and less over the top
I just finished watching this movie about an hour ago and it still resonates. The acting is superb and the story is amazing. I have to read the book now.
So let me get this straight: Frank pounds his own car, bangs another woman, almost beats up John here, kicks and screams at his wife, breaks a chair, drinks himself into oblivion, and April's the mental case?! I mean WTF?!
@MSGSlayer1 Ah have you wondered why he does those things? I mean I'm not excusing his behavior at all but come on, lets look at the bigger picture here. Her character isn't all innocent and sweetness, she did nag him ALOT and really she wasn't nice to him at all. Fom the looks of it, the only times when she loves him is when she sucks up to him to go to Europe. And low and behold, when he agrees, she's all happy and cheery with him. So I'm sorry, but if he's the mental case then so is she.
I love Leo, really, I love him so much ! But I can't say this is his best work ! He's wonderful in "Revolutionay Road", but he overacts a little in some scenes, especially in this one ! Michael Shannon is absolutely awesome, and Kate, ahhh, Kate, the best actress in the world, my favorite ! She delivers her best performance here, so heartbreaking and subtle !
This scene makes the whole movie 10 times better than it already is. Leo is friggin amazing here and I can't get over the fact that he totally reminds me of Jack Nickolson when he freaks out. Without trying to copy Jack, his voice, his eyes, his gestures...reminds me so much of Jack Nickolson. I mean, Leo gets better and better and better and better. There's no stoping him. I hope that one day he'll get rewarded for his amazing work b/c otherwise he'd burst with awesomeness.
true history xD!

I haven't seen much of Shannon's stuff, and I saw him in an interview about playing Zod in the new superman movie. That's why I'm watching this, to see a good performance from him.

It pains me to realize how underrated this film is.

Leonardo Dicaprio is the best actor of our generation in my opinion! Why he didn't get an oscar for this confuses me!

This scene is amazing! Perfect translation of the book

My personal opinion, but I thought his role deserved the oscar, Heath Ledger was fantastic, but it was an atonement win, Michael Shannon was actually realistically compelling and less over the top

So let me get this straight: Frank pounds his own car, bangs another woman, almost beats up John here, kicks and screams at his wife, breaks a chair, drinks himself into oblivion, and April's the mental case?! I mean WTF?!
Amazing performance, BTW.
MSGSlayer1 9 months ago

Michael Shannon was the only watchable actor in this whole pretentious piece of shit "white people moaning" melodrama.
Fantastic acting can't save a fucking bad film unfortunately.

Leo deserves at least a nomination for this Film, always a wonderful chemistry between Leo & Kate, they should play a lot more Films together !!
