hot on the heels of deep purple's , joe south hit, russell morris bangs out an Australian hit version. it was the way a lot of Aussie singers and bands made there way in the 60's. i still remember being shocked to see BJ Thomas on the credits of the Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid for "raindrops keep falling on my head" and not johnny farnham. ... and quite dissapointed to find out that it was a common thing in Australia at that time.
@BRUSHYSURFING, this is because during the 1960s there was an Australian law that commercial radio stations had to play a certain percentage of Australian artists. This led to a huge number of Australian cover versions of US and British songs. Some people thought the law was a good thing because it encouraged Australian artists, but in my opinion success is not genuine until it's on equal terms. PS: Yes, Johnny Farnham had the better version of "Raindrops".
I watched Uptight every Saturday morning. It was a four hour pop show from 8am till 12noon,( in Melbourne ) then I'd turn over to Channel 2 to watch Hit Scene hoping Russell would be on that. Yes, Uptight did become Happening '70, then '71 and '72, the latter compered by Jeff Phillips, but it was Ross D. Wylies show. Brilliant in it's day. They all mimed, but who cares? It was a great four hours of pop music.
I love Russell Morris! Does anyone have a video of the song "Hide and Seek"? I think Russell was with a band called "Somebody's Image" at the time of that particular song.
What I get from it is just how happy he looks. Something you don't get much of in music. Everybody gotta look cool and moody, and serious. Pretentious. Thing is, most of them are also BAD.
Actually I like this version over Deep Purple. Cuz it's just the song. The DP version is more the band. It's more mysterious too cuz they cover the line 'I have her' ...
As I remember, UPTIGHT ran for 3 hours on Saturday afternoon and was compered by Ross D Wylie. It was shown on Channel 9 in Perth but may have been on Ch10 in other states. It was later renamed THE HAPPENING and was shortened. The show's format and Wylie gave it more teen cred than Ch 7's BANDSTAND. Anyone got more info or posts?

@Crosnik, if you Google "Joe South -Hush" you'll find it, as Russell's song, was infact a cover of it.
As you see in sidebar he still singing this popular song to this day & still pulls a crowd.
He's a great guy.

I love watching these Australian covers of American tunes. This isn't much different from Billy Joe Royal's version, but it's still interesting.

I'm pretty sure Uptights name was changed to Happening 70 in 1970. It was shown on Saturday mornings on TEN in Sydney...
