Actually, they are wooden plates turned up or down towards light, and position is from objects near that "pixel", that is why there is bright lights above it.
No, it's actually plates being run by individual motors for every plate, connected to a black and white camera in the middle of the picture. This camera will make the plates turn upwards or downwards, accordingly to the picture. Up, it will reflect the light from the lights above, down, it will cast a shadow. So the camera transforms the view into an image, making the plates display the image in front of it, with a small delay.
