Loved this video, just thought you ought to know, I have posted a Tony Lee Trio video from 1982, "Tony Lee Trio 1982", that's how I came across your posting. We commissioned Tony to play at our Jazz festival in Hull, and a great show he put on This is just the first Number they played with Pete King (Great Sax Player) I will be uploading more numbers from the show soon. Please be patient with the amateurs at the beginning of the clip Tony shows how it should be done in great style.
I had the great pleasure of playing drums with the two Ts for a period prior to Phil Seaman, I did.'t mind being rodeout by Phil, he an I remaind friends even after we were double booked one time, we shared the dough. Great gig memories.
I don't HAVE this - thanks for uploading. I do have "Grooveyard" from the same location (and possibly, date) which I've added to your "video responses. Enjoy!
It is like being transported back in time to Barnes in 1977......great days and a wonderful way to be educated as a young player in the art of real jazz..........
we owe these great British players honour and a great debt.
Hi - Mike? Like Peter I was a regular in the Bull's Head in the late 70s/80s - and then later Tony taught me for about 3 years in the mid 80s. I spent many happy hours with both him and Olga in Kingston - he was an absolute inspiration to me - and she was always lovely - I always thought he was the number one british pianist and never understood (still don't) why he didn't get the acclaim that he deserved. he blows away Stan Tracy etc anyday - be fantastic to see more of these!
Yeah I agree - this is why I put the clip up. The original drummer was Tony Mann if I remember correctly (the Uk's answer to Jimmy Cobb) and bassist Tony Archer got a fabulous sound.
But in the mid-70's when was booking the trio in Liverpool the UK jazz scene had been taken over by The Jazz Center Society who appeared to be a bunch of po-faced twats from Scottish Universities with a very clear Ultra-Trendy-Leftie agenda.
The rule was ' Suppport anything - provided it didn't swing!"
Tony Lee was such a great resident at the BH as was Tony Archer. As commented, Tony L was much underrated and I miss those old days when the BH was a real jazz haunt when you could smoke. Although I didn't then! Tony Lee, Bryan Spring, Tony Archer and Art Themen - what could be better? Happy days.
Great to see and hear Tony Lee and Tony Archer, looks like the early eighties. I used to go to the Bull's Head 2 or 3 times a week back then, and it didn't matter who was headlining, The 2 Tony's were always worth seeing. Hello Tony Archer. You were always so cheerful and sociable, thanks for many many gigs I saw with you and Tony lee. Bt the way, Bill Le Sage - how great to "see" him again after so many years. RIP Tony Lee
Left-handed bass player! So i'm not the only one!

Think I read/heard somewhere that the Poirot Theme sax solo was played by Ray Warleigh. But don't quote me!.

Bob - great video. Tony's my Uncle, we have all his LP's - do you think the best of Tony Lee would be a good idea?
miketonylee 3 years ago
Yeah that would be great. He never received the credit due to him when he was alive in my view
