Pretty lame excuse the challenger used when he picked Morimoto. Why not challenge yourself and battle an Iron Chef that has the same background in cooking so it actually pushes you to create new and inventive dishes. But I know Morimoto can pull another one out.
i know that food and ingredients can unite the world, but my goodness having such varied cooking styles between the two chefs is going to be veeeeeery interesting!
@MrNaglest12 They are chili's, however the Bhut Jolokia may not have been around in America when this episode aired. The Scotch Bonnet/Hananero was the spiciest chili known for quite a while until the Bhut Jolokia or Ghost Chili came around.
Who picks the main ingredient? I don't think they could have picked a better one for the challenger. That's like giving a Chinese challenger rice for the main ingredient. That's actually funny. But 2 questions: Do the challengers bring their own sues chefs with them and have they ever made a iron chef vegetarian? For all us viewers who are vegetarian?
Morimoto's stats of his win/lose/ties aren't 72-12-1 it's actually only 16-12-1. The screwed up on the typograph for him. He wasn't even choson 85 times is u add up all the stats. Those are only American stats. If you added the ones with the original Iron Chef Japan,he would have more than 85. A lot more.
ive seen 5 of these where morimoto is in the battle and in every one he loses. how many of these do i have to watch to see him win one? he seems to be doing very poorly in Iron Chef America.
It seems only the victories against Morimoto have been uploaded here. But he has a higher winning rank that Cat Cora and Bobby Flay.
I'll be honest though, I think the score were skewed for this one, Morimoto created some very innovative uses of some of the chilies, but somehow scored an 8/15 for originality? He outscored him on both the Taste and Plating though.
I just saw this battle entirely, and i have to say, one of the rare times where the judging made me go "huh?" They all go "ooo never had this before" yadda yadda with Morimoto but give him an 8 for originality..made no sense to me.
its possible he lost cause of the differences between the tastes of japanese and american. I remember watching the original iron chef and thinking a lot of the dishes were really weird/unappealing looking. And then iron chef america has much more familiar/appetizing looking dishes.
n80006447: That's probably it. Something else I've noticed--at least from Alton Brown's commentaries on Morimoto's battles--is that Morimoto has a few signature culinary moves that define his dishes, and that might have worked against him--even though using those moves on a theme ingredient might be the first time anybody's ever seen it done.
This is one of my favorite episodes, except for the verdict. The judges say things like 'wow, I've never had anything like this before' about some of Morimoto's offerings, but what sort of score does he get in originality? Sheesh.
I think part of the 'originality' bit, was that morimoto had really just the 'jelly/consomme' that was very original. But many of the other things were very standardized japanese style. Sushi, Sashimi, Shabu Shabu, etc, with minimal 'change' to them, outside of the chilies added. Whereas Love played around with things a lot more, especially with the tuna 'ribs' and such
xDD poor Morimoto! I felt so bad when he bit the jalepeno. Thank you ever so much, as usual, for posting! I check every day to see updates from you. <3 God bless.
@mchan2048 Yeah, it was inevitable. One of the things that makes Morimoto different is that he spends more time actually tasting things. You just knew he was gonna do that. :)

@NedSCUBAyah Nah Morimoto was the ballsy choice, but he got really lucky that he got nothing but American peppers.

Indeed. This was discussed before in the final episode, but for some reason comments were removed. I wonder why.
I figure Morimoto lost due to Steingarten - his intro didn't provide enough hot air to inflate his enormous ego, so he was upset.

rayliotta1: What the hell?
How the hell can you possibly say "you can always count on Americans to rig reality shows" when Morimoto won 56.8% of his battles on ICA?
If tt was "rigged" like you claim "Americans can be reliably counted on" to pull, he wouldn't have won ANY matches!
Man, I understand wigging out over the way the judges screwed him on originality, but stereotyping Americans as cheaters?
