I have a 1996 Saturn SL2, if I were to store a spare ECU (Engine Control Unit) and an alternator inside my Faraday cage, would my car have a chance of surviving the initial EMP burst or are there other components on my car that I should purchase as spares and store in the Faraday cage?
hell yeah have an 89 ford 4x4 7.3 idi pretty much already emp proof with dual tanks for running things such as used motor oil, but i still love my ld 87 camey witch is less emp proof. that camry is probally better in the snow than my ford and gets 30 mpg.that ford about killed me in the snow this year when i hit the breaks the rear wheels locked sending me spinning.

Great Vid. Man I love that chevy I had 4 of these at one time in the late 70s, my dad had a auto repair shop, easy to find back then Whats your opin. on a postal jeep with a 6cy. chevy automatic, no electonics and hide your gasifier in the back. I have 3 postal jeeps a couple of chevy 6cy. My dad worked with alot of alterate fuel tech. during the 70s, alcohol from corn, methane from manure, and wood gasifier. shut it all down due to divorce, I still have some of the Mother Earth Plans somewhere.
@TheBigmetalhammer Its not a myth it definitely goes bad, thats why I use diesel for everything I can. (It lasts a lot longer in storage.) The AvGas lasts longer as it doesn't have the pump additives, but it will still go 'flat' in time. Engineer775 has a wood gasifyier, so I'm guessing that he's not storing enough to last for years, just months. He will probably just make fuel as he needs it.
I would love to have a really big sale boat with an electric trolling motor. You could generate power by wind or water. You could see people coming miles away. It would have to be one big boat for all of my preps though, l
IMHO, I would rather bug in than bug out. but for the sake of this video, I would choose something dependable like a toyota tacoma crew cab or a honda ridgeline. they offer decent mileage yet are 4x4, have space for the family, can tow a trailer which is a must. If I were more handy I would take your F350 diesel. I would also not draw attention to myself. Just a regular truck nothing tactical
On a seperate note PM me and tell me about the 60 acres, I noticed the Prudential for sale sign too.
wow, i've seen people convert trucks to be EMP proof, but never thought about storing replacement electronics, excellent idea that has somehow eluded me, thanks a ton.
I would prefer a 4x4 Jeep with a 4 cyl diesel engine (with conversion to allow burning vegetable oil) after market suspension, undercarriage protection and a winch, (the roads in my area are extremely hard to drive on without 4wd and without adequate ground clearance)
I love it. I have a question though. I am a teenage prepper and hopefully I will learn how to drive soon. If I were to buy a used car, what would be a good model to look out for in terms of bugging out, or just work in general? Thanks for any help. Peace.
@MichaelHuntington My suggestion for you would be to try to find a cheap Suzuki grand vitara, or chev tracker, the 4 cylinder version, they have true 4wd (as opposed to the rav4 and CRV) and they are really good for off road, and excellent for fuel economy given the capability and storage. (also they have a large availability for after market parts like suspension if you even feel like an upgrade)
@mrfishfilms It does not matter how it looks, any car that is still running after an EMP will be highly coveted and most likely be subject to many attempts of being taken from you.
There will be so few running cars you will be lucky to protect your own car from theft.
What do you mean, sneak through the woods with a bug out truck? I mean you will be a moving target going down the road in your old bug out vehicle if you are one of the few vehicles still running after SHTF. People will try to take your vehicle, your gasoline and al your food and water inside the vehicle also.
Im kind of building a similar truck. its a 1978 f150 4X4 and i have plans for a gasifier. I have a couple videos check them out if you have a chance. Thanks for sharing learned a lot from what you share.
Sweet ride! Hey, what disk brake set did you use? Cost? I'm working on a '66 C10 Fleetside. I figure you've resourced a great option. I'm also sticking with the stock 6cyl & 3 on the tree.
Part 2... my primary BOV is a diesel pulling a trailer which carries the Jeep. If the diesel fails, I unload the Jeep and continue with a smaller load. I carry 130 gallons of diesel and extra gas for the Jeep. The plan is to bug out to my retreat 700 miles away if needed.
I love old iron for the reasons you suggested. Easy to work on, cheap parts and everything is accessable. I'm currently restoring a 1945 Willys Jeep as my back up BOV. No electronics and easy to repair. Thanks for sharing.
Great Video, as always. Might wan't to consider making or buying a roof rack for the Passat that way you can put your family and a whole lot more gear in it.
horses the greatest mode of human transportation besides walking i would go with horses cause they are emp proof dont run out of gas. as long as there is leafy greens they can eat and humans have used them for thousands of years cant go wrong with all that history. plus theres not all these parts that can break like on vehicles. plus you can always bread more but you cant do that with vehicles anyways just my reasoning on why im goin with horses.
Honestly, my BOV is a Schwinn mountain bike. I attached a small bike pump, and through a nice stainless water bottle on there. I'm working on attacking a bike kit on there. Just basic stuff, five C's, bike tools, and a Leatherman. That and my bug out bag pretty much covers it for me.
I saw a for sale sign. I think I will buy that propperty and make your life miserable LOL.. You know me Brother I am diesel all the way. If I had to bug out Im taking to the air you will have to clear me a grass strip. Great Video..
Check out my bugout vehicle on my youtube channel I have a 2011 polaris ranger diesel started as standard millitary vehicle then I added turnsignals(with disconnect switch) lexan windshield top extra lights, sat navagational, cd player, power steering, power dump bed. I have lots of diesel stored.
since im by my self i think ill stick with my good old dirt bike, very educational though. i would through a bike in the back of that truck just in case, alot can happen to a truck so a bike would make a good back up. when i say bike i mean bicycle
Almost exactly that truck...fits in, is old school, not too flashy but still looks like I was a lover of cars (which I am not) who just happend to have a cool truck that ran during an EMP, a planned "happy accident" if you will.
@engineer775 do you know what the EMP weapon is? if the elites use it , and most likely they will how will you bug out dude? ..and second , most likely the elites will use bio-chem's to depopulate , are you prepared with MOPP suit's and ETC.
@engineer775 ok , you do know about an nuclear weapon ICBM ..right? THE FIRST THING HAPPENS FROM IT IS A EMP? ..ok , well since the 80's the elites have used that and made a weapon ..it is for above and at least 5 feet underground ..when used ..it will knock out all power systems including electrics
@DOCSAFETUBE Don't be too proud of this technological terror they've constructed. The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force. I find your lack of faith...disturbing. [I'm flexing my fingers at the screen]
@engineer775 Elite’s EMP simulator includes a 1.2 meter tall parallel plate with a table width sized 8 feet by 4 feet. it produces a radiated pulse of 2.5nsec rise-time and a 28nsec decay time at field strength amplitudes up to 50,000 volts/meter.
How about a couple hay burners..8^). My dad raised mules uptil I left home in 80. He is passed now but I know plenty of farmers in Tennessee where I was raised. I actually see a old red mule across the road from me right now.
I would like to get my hands on an old diesel van (without windows all around) with four wheel drive (preferably high ground clearance).
I like it has a closed box in the back, which could double as a sleeping space, carry considerable amounts of gear. I'd want it to have a winch installed on the front (can pull stuff out, or pull itself up from a ditch or whatever). I'd want it to have a serious front ram/kangaroo grille. Flat roof for solar panels. Practical, and not so cool looking ;-)
One of my many to do tasks is to "downgrade" my 92 f150. She has an 8' bed and shell on back, so she holds a lot of gear. I hope to loose the fuel injection and run a good old fashioned carb while gutting all the electronics. Just a good basic farm truck that will still be usable for chore's but very basic and easy upkeep maintenance.
I don't think having a operational vehicle at a time when no one else does, would be good for my safety and very good chance the vehicle would be stolen. I'm thinking the best option would be a bicycle, as long as you can peddle, it works. Bikes can have trailers too. Besides my only real option would be to bug in.
Your alternator should not be that great of a concern for emp. proofing. The large rectifier diodes would likely survive, and you may be able to dig up a mechanical voltage regulator (oldschool) My criteria of BOV is it must be easy on gas. I learned this the hard way during 2003 NorthEastern power outage-gas stations were inoperative.
I've not a big fan of dedicated/specialized BOV's. If your not well ahead of the massive crowds, your just another vehicle stuck in traffic. Post (event), I feel a vehicle is a bullet magnet or target of opportunity. Our daily drivers are our BOV's. They've been modified to be a little more rugged, but nothing crazy. Odds are you'll be in your daily driver when if you ever needed to truly bug home or bug out. Just my 2c's.
I believe I would go for a 1998 Toyota 4runner there's the reliability factor...but just hate that I would lose room compared to a dodge 1500 or F-150...
@mysciencenow ...how did you originally get the land there?... cause i am having a hard time raising enough money for land and house with this minimum wage job...
have you considered a good old fashioned diesel engine . so long as its fitted with a lucas pump you can run it on veggy oil , new or filtered used it will still run .
A full dress Honda Shadow 750 (10 years or newer), efficient, hauls what you need, attach a side car and micro trailer if needed (can always get a bigger motorcycle if that is planned, but the 750 is more efficient to start)
I like a pickup or van for a bugout, I've got a van. Seems like ethanol system may be good because you can always make fuel from most anything organic. Don't think I'll care what the government thinks of distilling if things get to that.
Do love those old trucks too. It would be cool to harden the systems from EMP, the military thinks they do it, we should be able to figure it out.
It's amazing how much better people get with mechanical doability, when they have to.
You're goin for a record on how many times you verbally end the vid aren't ya? lol ; )
Sweet Truck! I hate anti lock breaks. I want to control the breaking with my foot. These control things are making people stupid & taking away their mechanical feel so they don't have the touch with the machine & road relationship.
I have 2 diesels; 1988 4 Door Chevy R20 2WD 3/4 ton w/6.2 diesel, and a 1991 4 Door F-350 4WD, 3/4 ton w/7.3 diesel. Plus my 6Kw genset is diesel as well. -No budget for a BOV right now, so all I have is lots of untested thoughts.
-Fuel: something I can grow. Ethanol or biodiesel/SVO combo are at top. Wood gas lower.
-Carburetor has great advantages. Mechanical fuel injector is also simple to replace and possibly rebuild.
-Body: truck for greater flexibility. Comfort loses. Lotsa people ride in back on hay bales, etc
I love the modernizations: brakes, suspension, radio, etc

I'm thinking the best option would be a bicycle, as long as you can peddle, it works. Bikes can have trailers too. Besides my only real option would be to bug in.

lead car wrap/blanket, in my research just lead foil paper could cut 99% of emp waves and at least lighten the damage.
aswell you never spoke of hydrogen (water) powered vhicles.

That vehicle will attract to much attention. It's not "grey" enough.

Mr. Engineer775 do you know how much wood you need per mile for your ford?
rhodanperry8 1 month ago
@rhodanperry8 about 2 pounds of hardwood less then 20% moisture.

My apologies to all those who commented on an earlier upload. I had to deal with some OPSEC issues that I was careless with! Repost if you can!

I believe I would go for a 1998 Toyota 4runner there's the reliability factor...but just hate that I would lose room compared to a dodge 1500 or F-150...

My BOV is going to be a 2000s era Chevy/GMC suburban. I have a medium sized family. I'd like to have a bio/diesel engine installed.

have you considered a good old fashioned diesel engine . so long as its fitted with a lucas pump you can run it on veggy oil , new or filtered used it will still run .
spannerman69 1 month ago

@tblbaby Agreed!

Engineer775...where are you getting the gas with no ethanol?
Thanks.

@boat6868 I can get it several places locally. Just ask around, you find someone who sells it.
