Perhaps the only other singer that can challenge Nilsson in this epic role is Sutherland. Both have wonderful large voices able to penetrate the orchestra. However the difference lies in the color of voice where as Nilsson is cutting edge and steely Sutherland warm and feminine!! Brava..will never be equalled.

Birgit Nilsson as Turandot is absolutely a phenomenon. Her singing is glorious!

By the way, in the same year 1969 she sang several performances of Turadot in the Arena di Verona. These performances will remain highlights in the story of the Stagione Lirica there since 1913.

This may be the best Turandot Nilsson ever sang. She sounds even more glorious here than in either of her commercial recordings. (The lip-synching is regrettable. It never looks authentic.) The other singers are excellent, but Nilsson is electrifying. She certainly puts all of the current singers of this role in the shade.

This opera has always fascinated me, and this performance is marvellous.

The music is beautiful, but not too "sweet" played.
