@snake2006 Yes they are. You are shallow, and honestly, should be glad this type of gamer exists. Who do you think will defend us and accept gamers more? The one that has never played a video game? Or one that loves these small games that appeal to their own audience?
You missed one of the most important fact, Money. You know how expensive it is to be a gamer ? We, the gamers, spend a lot of money on each game the companies release, sometimes we pay way more than we should and spending every single cent on videogames or online subscriptions will not change the people see us, the gamers, and how videogames are a bad thing. It's just that as consumers we should spend our money more wisely. And finally, we need to be social gamers, If gaming is what you really w
@RockSebas032 do some math. Assuming you buy 1 new console every generation (5 years, $350 console), and a new game every month (at 100% full price), you only spend $790 every year max. And of course, you won't buy a fully priced game every month if your like me, and probably won't pay full price for a new console, and the console generation is only expanding. It's not that much, really.
@mascotbeaver104 It is still a lot of money. Not all gamers are the same but like you said that's $790 if we buy a console and 12 games the year, Console generations last at least 6-8 years ''Do the math''
@RockSebas032 As I said, I was assuming 5 year generations, and I know I don't buy 12 full priced games a year. I spent a mere $340 last year, and it was a massive year.
The media only wants to see the bad parts in gaming, which doesn't really help either...
But anyways, I'm proud to be a gamer and in my opinion gaming will always be sort of a sub culture, it always was and it will never change... and with that I mean real gaming, not casual gaming, no just people who are sort of gameophile or something like that.
Personally I wear the title of "gamer" proudly. I don't fit many of the stereotypes (except for being hopped up on caffeine all the time) so when people find out I game, it creates a "crisis of stereotypes" that might force them to reevaluate what they think about gaming and gamers.
THIRD WE NEED TO CLEAN UP OUR COMMUNITY! YES! THANK YOU! if people were a little (a lot) more mature in games we would not be down upon nearly as badly. Think before you speak
M'kay, this topic was great and all, and the "brony" thing is another good example of "the label is only there because it's considered abnormal," but looking beyond all that for a second, that was a great fade-out, guys. Just saying.
Troglodyte! Yes! I get to learn about videogames AND expand my vocabulary. It's like an old school Adam Sessler blog before he gave into the trolls and eased up on his Dostoevsky and Tolstoy references. Intelligent discussions about games are getting harder and harder to find. Thanks guys.
TBH, with the introduction of "realistic" games in terms of graphics and gameplay (games such as COD gave people the feel of being at war) has introduced a lot of "meat-heads" to the gaming world.
The downfall of games becoming the norm is now people like M$ are focusing more on Kinect and the Kinectimals then serious AAA games. I guess that's where the "Don't let friends buy crappy games", but it's still making an impact.
You think YOU'RE upset about being called a Gamer? Try looking at the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic community, and how uptight they get over being called a "Brony". Or Hell, even "Pegasister".
@DarthRiko It is, because believe it or not, there ARE fans of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, who are genuinely offended when called "brony", whether it be that they're a girl and they thing the term sounds too masculine, or that they don't think they're enough of a "hardcore" fan to be called that.
I don't think someone is a gamer just for playing games.. I think it comes with hardcore gaming and THAT would be the same as a film buff or book worm...
Wait. There are directly analogous terms for film watchers and readers (that is if you have a passion for it like gamers do). They're critics and...well...readers. No one who just kinda plays games when they want to and nerd out about a single game calls themselves a gamer just like no one who just goes to watch a movie when something looks good is a critic or like someone who reads books just for the lolz and doesn't really have a favorite author a reader. It's simple.
Personally, I don't play games in public because i can't immerse myself in a game in such a crowded and noisy place. I treat it in the same way as reading a book.
The bit around 4:40 ... isn't exactly Gamer-specific. The picture accompanying "it sets us apart" is doubly apt - I feel that way about music enthusiasts. I like music, and I can listen to most of it, but I know very little and have a specific niche taste. I cannot hold a conversation about music with anyone. They might as well be speaking backwards Mandarin to me. You play 2 hours of Halo, you can talk about it for just as long. You listen to one album once? You know nothing. Nothing at all :-\
The sad part of this is that some of the people that need to change, i.e. the 8 year old teabagger and dorm room gay/race basher don't give 2 shits about the image of video game players as a whole. They've probably never heard of this series, or just straight up ignore the points EC brings up because all they want to do is play the next CoD with their buddies and scream "f*ggot!" at whoever shoots them. I think the "real hardcore" gamers are doing the worst for the image, not mainstream
I find it strange that people would still think as gaming as abnormal, everyone I know that's under the age of 30 plays some sort of video game, so I've never had the feeling that playing video games is shameful. I've happily sat in public and played my psp without being harrassed, but my point is that over here (in at least the north of) England, I'm pretty sure that gaming is accepted as a valid medium.
I have a better solution: How about not pretending that all people who play games are a part of a community. Then people we won't be lumped together to a single stereotype, by pretending there is a "gaming community" we are perpetuating the stereotype even further.
@droppingpenny Stereotypes will always exist.. It is not the gaming community that this is a problem for, it is the "non-gaming" community that puts this stereotype on us.. The problem is, when they see it as a single stereotype - and the use the "bad apples" as examples, it begins to be a problem.. You cannot get people to not "lump people together in stereotypes" - my guess is because it is so ingrained in our culture..
@Metalynx There is no such thing as a "non gaming community" either. What i meant is, that whenever somebody says something about gaming a lot of the so called gamers take it personally and perpetuate the stereotype with their responses even further. If we could make ourselves look like normal people who happen to play games, stereotyping wouldn't be a problem, just look at the people playing Wii, nobody lumps them together into a stereotype if you don't count the so called hardcore...
@Metalynx ... That is of course because most people who play Wii are just normal non obsessive people who happen to play games, hence why nobody is applying the common "gamer" stereotype to them. I would argue that trying to "clean up" the community will perpetuate the exclusion even further and make the so called "hardcore gaming" even less relevant than it is, while true mainstream games and consoles that don't exclude anyone will continue to thrive Appealing to mainstream is the key
@droppingpenny I don't disagree.. I don't completely agree with all points either.. However there are people who don't indulge in games at all, however they are hardly a community, just as people who play games aren't a community either.. I am a "normal person who happens to play games" - and i am looked as such, until a take part in a conversation relating to any kind of gaming in public, then the "gamer tag" gets put on me - which i don't mind..
@droppingpenny However the that is where it stems from.. This creates the problem that people who play games, can't publically indulge in their interests, in the same way that people who like books or play soccer can.. Also i don't understand why you want the term "hardcore gaming" to be relevant? Is it really? I hear people play CoD say that all the time, however the game has no support for "hardore" (competitive or min/maxing), or does it just refer to time spend?
@Metalynx Well i partially agree, however I feel that the gamer stereotype tends to apply only when people indulge extensively in gaming activities, and only on certain consoles like the Xbox 360 a console known for it's FPSs. These games and consoles tend to form what the gaming media tends to call "hardcore gaming" it's actually a meaningless term since the so called "hardcore games" tend to be really easy and I personally don't really want it to be relevant...
@Metalynx ... however people who tend to be associated with the stereotype are the so called "hardcore gamers" to begin with, you never hear anybody complaining about people who play WiiFit or WiiSports but as soon as you start discusing Gears of War the gamer tag gets put on mostly in a negative context. What i was trying to elaborate earlier is, that as soon as the consumption of games reaches a threshhold, games will become mainstream and the stereotype will no longer be perpetuated
@Metalynx However to accomplish this, we don't need games with some arbitrary "artistic merit" we need games that sell to the mainstream audiences, and there are nearly not enough games and consoles to fill that gap, and after Nintendo's announcement of the Wii U, I'm sure that the only 2 mainstream consoles (DS and Wii) we have left will disappear in favor of the niche "hardcore" consoles and games unless someone else fills the gap.
I like how you boast videogames get mentioned in the mass media by famous people and then move on to say how we need to demand games that are more than just mindless violence when the 2 examples previosuly put forward which were somehow meant to serve as videogames being a rich medium were Call of Duty and Halo, 2 mindless shooters one of which has the smallest learning curve I've ever seen in a shooter.
That said I'm still a fan of the show and I like a lot of the stuff you guys come up with.
The Wii and social games like Farmville has introduced more people to games, but those people won't think of themselves as gamers, and gamers won't called those who play casual games as gamers. So I think we're stuck with gamer being a derogatory term for a while.
@awdrifter3 And the problem with "social" games like Farmville, is that they're as far from the medium's true potential as an art form as you can possibly come. That's true for most of the casual Wii games too.
