Shinty is being re-introduced to the New England USA area now. I attended a presentaion which explained how to play and the history of the sport. I think it is a cool sport and hope it takes off again to stay. I hear that it is played in the western part of the states here. But they use a football field as it is hard to find a field (pit) that the regulations call for. I was amazed at the ancient history of it all. I will be in Scotland next September and hope to see a game.
@MrFocaleile Both games have really goon points. I think they should just make a permenant hybrid of the two games so it's easier to promote, but I know many people want to preserve the two games, despite the fact they're just versions if the same game a couple of hundred years ago.
@SMCPedro I wouldnt say shinty is more skillfull. They are both unbelievable sports. type in 'All Ireland Hurling Semi Final 2005 Galway v Kilkenny Part 1' you'll see skill there! Some say it is the greatest game of all time.
Yes the Irish camán is wider but to be honest I am by no means an inter county hurler but I can hit pebbles with a narow platic pipe; which means its the hand to eye cordination that matters. Its only in the last 30 years that the bas's have widened so much.
@ColossalCollapse Yeah I suppose. They are both just insane. Wish they were played in more places though so that we could actually see countries playing it (other than Scotland/Ireland).
Hockey is actualy very young compared to shinty. Shinty (along with Hurling) are among the oldest sports in history, they go back 1000s of years. So atually I wouldn't be suprissed if hockey was a copy (spin-off) of shinty.
My first time seeing shinty being played and hearing Scottish gaelic being spoken... I could nearly understand most of what they were saying!! Is shinty big in Scotland though??
this is the first time i'v seen shinty. it doesn't have a patch on hurling. it looks like that hockey game women play all the time. the shinty sticks look terrible hurley is a way better instrument
justa say hurling before 1900's was played on teh ground like shinty and there were 2 games in ireland winter and summer hurling the winter game were allowed pick up ball, summer game on ground. so in a sense shinty continue on ground (summer hurling) and ireland play the winter game.
thats becasue in hurling you allowed to pick up the ball. but in shinty played on the ground.. the cross codes are played on the ground.. they should have a game in shinty and have a game in hurling that would be better.
looks like a mess I've never seen this sport before I have played hurling, my dads Irish so I know the sport well but this looks like a mix between hockey and hurling, I play hockey myself
yeh it is.the club is kinda shaped like a golf club so you run and chip it off the ground.really hard to do.its like taking a golf swing whilst running!every year there is a cross codes shinty(scotland) vs hurling(ireland) match on tv.shinty won when i watched it.think they had a better range with their golf club style things.but im just a stupid englishman who will probably get a load of abuse for my lack of knowledge of both sports!!
hurling isnt hijacked by republicanism. where did ya get that from. im not sayin it doesnt have it republic roots but its a game for all ireland. and u cant have a northern ireland hurling team. ye wud ave 1 match a year and get hammered by the republic. follow ur parish and ur county.
Ireland isnt my country, the GAA names stadiums after republicans, it also did not allow protestants or even catholics who played "foreign" sports.
its a shame the great sport of hurling HAS been destroyed. and actually they wouldnt have 1 match and they would play the hybrid game against scotland probably.
I like it. It clearly needs funding though!Maybe they could organise themselves like the GAA or maybe the GAA should help them out, they are playing Gaelic Athletics after all! I liked the commentary, I'm a Irish Gaelic speaker and I could actually follow what he was saying... well some of it! Does any1 know anything about the dialect he was speaking?
Aye it's Scottish Gaelic (pronounced gah-lick rather than gae-lick)...i can't quite remember the spelling but i know it's different from the irish spelling also. It's not as well supported by the Scottish government as the Irish language is in Ireland, which I find heart breaking.
GREAT GAME, makes hockey look like the womens game it is. WHY NO PROTECTION FOR GOALIE? If there was the game would spread throughout the world easy, or is it only to be a Celtic game only?
hey just to let you know the guy who scores the goal at the end of the game,(the winner) was scored by me. Shinty is a great sport, it might not have as many fans as football but hey we love it.
Its a pretty mental sport, only really played in the Highlands and west coast of Scotland. We love it though. When there are not exactly many other sports facilities in and around the region (I can't think of any mainstream football or rugby teams) its sometimes more popular.
It gives you more freedom than hockey and is only slower than Hurling because we have sticks... not shovels!

In hurling you have a way wider stick! Its well harder to play with a caman.
Shinty is more skillful

I would love to try Shinty, its a shame hurling has been Hijacked by Republicanism, because i would love to see a NI Hurling or Shinty team.
and is it just me or does Scottish Gaelic sound very Scandinavian?

it dint allow prods in the norht not to play. and da foreign sports never realy came onto it.
and who should we name the stadiums after?
Croke park is name after a bishop.
limerick stadium(gaelic grounds) not a republican.
semple stadium (Tipperary) named after a player. my god i could go on for ages.
how HAS the game been ruined? in other words your tryin to say it been ruined from the begining!
actually do u even have a clue what ur shittin on about?
