Large coins like 50-cent pieces have a higher center of gravity than common coins like pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters so they don't spin as long or as far down the throat of the funnel as the smaller coins. Of course, not many people carry them or would drop them in if they had them. Fortunately, there are millions of dollars worth of common coins, and Spiral Wishing Wells are helping to gather up a lot of them for charity.
