It is unfortunate that the animal overpopulation comes down to this. It all comes down to irresponsible owners who are to lazy to spay and neuter. I could never work at a kill shelter, even a no kill shelter would be stressful to me. Best thing to do is get animals from shelters, if you have a great heart then a kill shelter, the thought of rescuing a dog or cat is amazing. There -IS- a difference between a backyard breeder and a reputable breeder. How about instead of indiscriminately bashing all breeders, supporting responsible individuals and directing the anger where it belongs on the puppy/kitten mills and BYB's? Some people like a certain breed for whatever reason, and some, like the Sphynx cat I have, are next to impossible to ever find in a shelter. Besides, some people like showing pets as a competitive hobby. Most shelter animals can't do that.

However, if you look at what a breeder is, you have those motivated by profit who do not put health testing (hip dysplacia, congenital heart defects, etc...) first, and only want to make a quick profit. How can you--no matter how many times you do it, kill a animal? dog? cat? (re: kill box) There is no damn way....none....I have 6 rescues in my little tiny weeny house (I clean ALOT). So worth it. The best decision I ever made was adopting my Matilda from the local SPCA that I also volunteer for. You can find any dog of any breed or mix of any age at a shelter.

One comment I would like to make is this: people these days talk about donating to "no-kill" shelters. The animals in "kill" shelters need help and support too. Wonder Dog Rescue pulls dogs from kill shelters and rehomes them responsibly. I can tell you that most of these "kill" shelters would rather not euthanize.... but they have no choice if they run out of room.... they all need our help!
boy, I could tell you things about "no-kill" shelters.... it's not always good either, unfortunately. Ultimately we need solid spay/neuter ordinances, to protect these wonderful beings from dying in these horrible ways...... Imagine too the plight of people WORKING in those shelters. I know one central CA valley shelter that euthanized 47,000 animals in 2006. That's 126 animals dying EVERY DAY.... that job would really suck........
I am working so hard to spread awareness of issues like these. In this video, at least I can see that the euthanizers feel shame, it's their job and they don't have enough resources or room for dogs/cats that aren't beinga adopted. I wish people would put this into perspective.
