Wouldn't the added weight actually decrease the travelable distance? Otherwise it is cool, just seems like it would only be capable of increasing terminal velocity, seems like you would need a rigid wing/tail for engines to be of much use.

I would think a device similar to what scuba divers use would be more effective, you could vector the hot exhaust down and back so that it provided more lift than forward thrust (as well as not burning your face) plus you could drop it with its own small chute once you were out of gas.

@CarlosMarioMedellin because you'd need some kind of variable geometry thing coming out of you arms, like a bat's wings. It's not that it couldn't be done, just that nobody's thougt of it before, plus having the rockets is probably more practical. A human being might be able to flap larger wings to prolong flight; but we are not strong enough to stay in the air like birds do. There are birds that can fly for days on end, even while asleep. Also, we don't have internal air sacks, like birds.

In glide mode the Gryphon can reach speeds of 135 mph. The German manufacturer, SPELCO GbR, is exploring the possiblity of attaching a small turbojet to this puppy.

What if the do it in Polycarbonate? cheap plastic. Maybe we all can have one of these puppies.

@CarlosMarioMedellin they can slightly, but more wingspan equals more surface area and more glide time, slower falling times and a higher drag coefficient.. smaller wings = more speed and more acrobatics.. but at some point the wings get too large for the human arms to manage the drag and wind resistance (I think)
