man you can fit a 2 door hyundai getz in the trunk look at the size of that car! but for the 50's its pretty impressive even now! I man come on how many of us here can create something like that in our garden?>
me and my dad restored a 1957 ford fairlane 500 retractable its was my grandpas its been in me family sence it was new im gona try to get a video of it 1 day
How adorable! Lucy and Desi in a Ford commercial! This was when the craftmanship was solid and the makers stood behind their products-didn't need 'warranties' back then!!
@LJAR28 : yeah, it seems slow by today's standards - but remember, "Fast" food hadn't been invented yet; nor push-button telephones; nor was it acceptable for women to wear slacks! It was quite a different time.. and I'm not sure sure today is much better.
..now if overrated chevy had that roof, the media would have made it mega famous. ford was where it was at back then. mabey the 80's fords weren't much but the 50-60's sure where
These cars were not "prone to failure". The mechanisms did have problems when the nut behind the wheel did not follow operating instructions, like stopping the action mid-way between up or down. These are very reliable, well engineered cars especially for 1957.
Throughout history new machines were always prone to breakage or failure. Look at the first jet made by the Germans at the end of WWII, many of them weren't shot down, their engines failed but the reason being they were rushing brand new technology.
Awesome, you'd probably be done faster if you put the top up yourself, and I don't want to know how little it took for the mechanism to break down, but hey, we're all lazy. Still, it's really ridiculously slow to get up, it even made me laugh. Lucy and Ricky are funny though!
The car shown in this commercial was the one Ford used in its early publicity photos--and came in a two-tone combination not officially offered (the middle section of the car was generally Colonial White instead of the dark color shown in the spot). "The newest kind of Ford--it's the bright new star of 'I Love Lucy!'" ... still true!
the roof going up sounds like a jet about to take off

Well, in fact the invention belongs to Georges Paulin, and was first introduced in the Peugeot 402...in 1935! Anyway, VW didn't invent this roof...

omg it takes ten thousand years for the roof to attach, it sounded like they were about to blast off.
taurusred 3 years ago
awesome idea, although i know now why they were so prone to failure. here's what the top alone required to operate:
10 power relays
10 limit switches
4 lock motors
3 drive motors
8 circuit breakers
610 feet of electrical wire.
