  • i like this

  • absolute machine

  • the groove at 1:12 is boss

  • fuck

  • why are they get him out :(

  • does anyone know what sticks he uses here?

  • @BojanglesUdon he uses vater "virgil's assault" sticks i think

  • @huuurgh naaah man, hes vater endorsed, and has the Chris Pennie signature "Fight Mannequins" really goood sticks actually, some of my favourites

  • @xXCleggy755Xx yeah he does now eh, he used virgils ones in the past though. be keen to check out his signature sticks! :)

  • Badassery to the max.

  • I've seen this video over 200 times this year alone.

  • i love how he does this in a polo lol

  • this is unreal

  • It's awesome seeing HOW this is actually played. Really takes the guess work out.

  • @thepatrick1213 read the title buddy, called sunshine the werewolf :D

  • What song is this????....

  • DESTROYER!

  • I was listening to Calculating Infinity today. I can't believe the jazz influence behind this beast. He hardly uses blasts, which is rare for such a band, but this guy just fucking kills it. I love it.

  • @Ioserbam If you love Pennie you would also love Matt Halpern. Pennie told me that Halpern is actually better than he is after a show.

  • reminds me of a song from perfect dark on the n64

  • almost perfect technique, thats why it looks effortless for him.

  • Chris Pwnie is more like it. AMIRITE? It's because he pwns...

  • @StonersProductions Not when you say it like that.

  • hooooollllllyyyy shit my favorite drummer of all time

  • My guess is that the like button was broken, and the one guy that disliked this video just wanted to push something.

  • He's not as good as Travis Orbin? lmao I guess everyone is entitled to their opinions

  • TIGHT AS FAUCK!

  • that was fuckin tight as hell

  • Watching how effortlessly it is for him makes me strive to be a better drummer.

  • He's not as good as Travis Orbin. But he's still amazing. No doubt.

  • Has anyone transcribed that groove starting at 0:17? kickass!

  • @bentheiburg He has a book called Polyrhythmic potential that has 5 songs (including Sunshine the werewolf) fully notated in the back of it. I just got it and looking at the notation makes me want to claw my eyes out because it's such a mindfuck to see it on paper XD

  • I like this guy's style.

  • Forgot Thomas Pridgen, Forget Tony Royster Jr...

    This guy has CHOPS.

  • this is my favorite drum line he has done, it puts a smile to my face when i hear all those polyrhythms and a frown at the same time because it discharges me from playing drums lol

  • Listen to Coheed's song Guns of Summer. Might be the best drumming he has ever done.

  • @mutatingfred24 Jee wiz, mutatingfred is intense as fuck. Damn guys, let's get outta here before he words us even harder.

Really though, Chris and Ben were the only two original members left, and they were having some domestic issues. They weren't on the same page any more, and things were just getting ugly. So Chris left, and got an invitation to play drums for Coheed. Why would anyone pass up that offer? It was basically either mope around at home or join Coheed... Gotta make money somehow.

  • @YogritMUN yes i am princess so run along now you and your dep followers

  • @mutatingfred24 I'm not against him being in Coheed. At his status, drums are his career, and whatever he does, he does for a good reason. I just like him as a drummer no matter what he does.

  • @YogritMUN ALright then thats all u had to say in the first place because im with you there i like chris because he is a great drummer as we all can pretty much agree im just tired of people talking shit about him leaving dep its over and done with hes been out for a while so people just need to get over it and listen to the old dep if they love him so much

  • I think pennie plus coheed will be interesting.... mostly because coheed has never had a drummer of this caliber. He'll crush the songs and the guitar wanking will have to keep up with the drums for a change :P

  • @SpitFire301

the album's drums are amazing, wait till you hear them

  • one thing pennie's drumming has taught me; hitting soft is just as important as accenting.

  • @hugewolf666 So true dude.

  • dudes got the touch

  • i love that part at @ 1:12 !

    sick drumming

  • i'm soooooo pissed that this fucker left DEP!

  • this is fucking sick drumming. i love this part of the song

  • I am obssessed with this video for a couple of years now. Go join a real band Pennie, I miss you!

  • the ghost noting on the snare and ride here are serious bitches to learn

damn you pennie and your godlike drumming

    :D

  • Holy blast, batman @ 2:45

  • carey and pennie are both insanely good drummers but they have different styles so its kinda hard to compare. I hafta admit i was a carey fan long before i heard of pennie. BOTH ARE OUTSTANDING MUSICIANS WHO KNOW THEIR THEORY!

  • @DrMaximumChill ohhh yes his moeller is ridiculouslly tight

i wonder how he actually managesto write his songs though :P

  • In response to matbell: Psh! Pennie. All the way.

  • DESTROYER!

  • On the spot, Pennie.

As a battle of recorded drum performances, Carey would win.

But I like how you compare the two, because they are in my opinion the two greatest drummers ever. Mike Portnoy can eat my balls, I like Pennie and Carey because their whole thing isn't about being flashy like Portnoy.

Ticks and Leeches? Pennie being able to handle that? Probably, but likely without the same precision on the tom groove as Carey.

They both have strengths and...barely any weaknesses as drummers.

  • his one handed rolls are rediculous

  • Holy crap it's amazing how loose he stays and still has so much power. Watch his left hand. His fulcrum is pretty loose too. You can see by the gap between thumb and pointer. Damn he's good.

  • The key of power IS to stay loose all the time. =)

  • @MyPerfectOpiate Mollor technique disposes one to becoming fairly loose when playing. His use of mollor is incredible and a sure exemplar of the technique.

  • Good lord Chris Pennie is the shit!!

  • its not fair this guy gets all the tallent

  • god i still cant believe him. amazing

  • chris pennie is a legend

  • Gnarkillian

  • watching the fallout fly back up...

  • that blast at 2:45 is ggrrrgnarlified

  • One of the most technical drummers of all time.

  • @theSyringe you get this from this video? i see this stuff in drum solos by almost every drummer. cookie cutter chops that most drummers learn.

  • @Necronaut What, doubles?

  • @Colerosity that to

  • @theSyringe well hes a jazz drummer what do you expect if your a jazz drummer or bassist you an amazing metal musician

  • @freetweak Jazz drummer? Why do you consider him a "Jazz drummer". He's just a good all-around drummer.

  • @inimicalODDITY the way he plays.

  • @freetweak care to elaborate? I'm just curious

  • @inimicalODDITY the song he is playing on the drums is straight up jazz style playing. and i have read some interviews saying he started out as a jazz drummer.

  • mike portnoy isn't shit compared to any gospel chops drummer...there's a whole 'nother world of drummers out there...and vinny colauita, terry bozzio, and chris brien are way beyond him also

  • the only thing that i like about portnoy is all his odd time stuff, other than that his fills are so fucking lame and easy, it's not hard at all to do the kind of fills he does for the intro to "honor thy father" but everybody thinks THAT is so hard, that fill is one the most basic fills ever it's so simple....and his solo's are nothing i could play them in fact i should just learn one so i can post a video

  • you're cool.

  • At least Pennie's work sounds good.

  • well go masturbate while watching him play cheezy shitty prog drum beats while standing up behind the kit which is all he does

  • I want to crawl inside his brain

  • soon after, i'll want to crawl inside yours.

  • that fucking blast beat...

  • Talk about chewing gum and walking at the same time...

  • lmao

  • thats how he keeps count... When I think of it before playing thats what I do

  • 2:46

  • Fuck, he is an animal!

  • he's a GOD

  • i love how hes chewing gum the whole time haha

  • blast beat at 2:46 is so intoxicating

  • fucking brutal I love this shit

  • 0:15 i looove that groove!! i incorporate stuff like that into alot of the playing i do lately because of this :D

  • I love this part its so catchy if your a drummer

  • To be honest i didn't think his solo was that impressive but the sunshine the werewolf part was good!

  • this guy has AMAZING chops...

  • although Gil is very good, chris is just plain awesome, he has all the aspects of an amazing drummer. i think Gil is more like Chris' apprentice as of yet. chris is so fukin good

  • dude look at gils version of this song live he does an absolutely amazing job, props of course to chris because he's the original person who made the song, but i think gil does a better job, not tryin to pick a fight or anything lol

  • oh no you didn't

  • amazing coordination. just amazing.

  • I don't even play the drums, but I can't stop watching these videos. Chris is amazing.

  • what hihats are those

  • lol

It's so wierd to see how low he has his cymbals.

  • thats how i have mine, and i find it MUCH easier than high up cymbals. when they're low, its just a flick of the wrist.

  • you have a point,

When they put them really high like travis barker it's just weird.

  • is it just me, or is he wound up tighter than a spring. In any case, the energy was amazing in that performance!

  • i would rather have chris in DEP then Gil ,but it is what it is.

  • i like chirs in dillinger more too he has a more cold technical feel, Gil is a lot more warm and groovy which shows in what he writes for dillinger. Hes a hell of a substitute though, definatly one of my favorite drummers

  • Actually Gil wrote close to nothing with the band as of yet, although yes, by the looks of his diverse drumming roots (reggae, rock, metal), we can expect groovier, perhaps less busy patterns ^^

Still Chris Pennis, for me, represents 40% of DEP up to now, and I don't think we can really measure Gil's arrival's influence in the band's music as of yet.

  • I know most of the record wasn't written by him, but there are songs

He explains it all in his MD interview

  • Don't worry I know I know...I think the songs where he said he had "more input" are "Dead as history", "Mouth of Ghosts" and "Horse Hunter" if I remember well. Anyways it's 6:30 AM here so I won't feel too bad if I later realize I'm wrong lol

What I meant about the 40% of DEP was that in general terms, Chris Pennie is almost half the band, not that he specifically wrote 40% of the music. He was definitely the main "component" of the band, that's what I meant to say, sorry about that.

  • yamaha absolute maple custom all the way

  • Mapex Pro-M

  • Imagine: Chris standing calm, someone scares him "BOO!" behind his back and the guy jerks and goes through a wall... heheh.... he looks so tight, just a hinge before a nervous breakdown (yet his drumming is fluid, melodic and oh so accurate)

  • Man you make no sense, but Chris Pennie has the the trippiest tech feel to his drumming. I love it

  • does anyone know the difference from coated heads and clear ones???

  • Sure - Clear heads are the transparent head, which give a fatter, deeper, low end thud sound, common in rock (tough they are used by many jazz drummers). Coated heads are usually white and give a rounder, thicker sound, more common in jazz (though many rock and metal drummers use them as well).

  • hmm well a lot of alternative bands like saosin, paramore, underoath etc. use coated heads o_o

  • Yeah. It all depends on the type of sound you want.

  • ok :] and also one other thing they tune their base drums, toms real low and snares real high right? and what do die cast hoops do???

  • The toms and bass are usually tunes low, and the snare is pitched up, yes. Die Cast Hoops are thicker and stronger, and allow the drum to be tuned more evenly and with less overtones. Pearl is most popular for these.

  • awesomeeeeeeeeeee :D

    thank you!

oh and one more thing im sorry:[ do custom drums suck? lol

  • custom drums are usually better since you can pick your sound out in the finest of details. But, they're much more expensive.

  • thank you:]

    i love you

  • no prob man. Drums are my life.

  • dude it pisses me off so much coheed does not deserve this freakin visionary

or am I the only one here who thinks coheed is junk and doesn't have half the snare room pennie needs

  • agreed.

  • totally

    dep is where pennie belongs

  • so clean...one of my favorite drummers

  • transitions.

thats what makes music heavy, and chris is the king of transitioning between different styles, times, and tempos.

  • I love youtube

  • thats the fucking business!!

  • wow

  • thank you for posting this. i hadn't listened to Dillinger in so long and then i just started listening to Calculating Inifinity and Under the Running Board again. at the time, Pennie was one of the top drummers in the hardcore/metal scene and he was just a spring chicken right outta college.

  • Some of his fills sound like he loses time, then I remember he probably threw like a 9/8 measure in there or something ridiculous. I love how he plays such intricate, complicated stuff, but he maintains a groove. A lot of drummers can't groove, Pennie can. I hope he takes Coheed to a whole new level.

  • hes in coheed and cambria now??

  • haha your a bit late man.

  • this guy is insane

  • I can't get over his drumming.

    The ultimate is tasty.

  • i love the first beat he plays the ghost notes make it sound so amazing <333

  • great stuff

  • that's weird, I've been searching chris pennie for awhile and this only came up after searching in google. Great drummer though!

  • First!!
