i can only say this game rocks hard. Spend more then 40 hours probably now on it. Best space fight sim up to now, with actually good graphics thanks to modding team. and it will still improve.
e.g. it even supports shader 3.0 now. other than that there are a crapload of campaigns to play with a really good story.

Honestly it takes too long to do anything in X3, if you have a somewhat decent ship it cost an arm to repair 1% of damage, plus i didn't find anything to "fight for". It's an open universe but i hardly felt like i had much impact on it, and you couldn't pick a side, all the races are at peace...meh
@ZyreXMostWanted You can in some mods, like Blue Planet 2: Age of Aqarius, you pick targets for your guns with normal targeting controls(subsystems included). You can also set weapon banks to automatic or fire on target if in range and set priority to capital ships, bombers of fighters. It's pretty cool, you can even glide(turn while not changing travel direction) and avoid beams from enemy ships while still doing damage with your front weapons, this is great for frigates and cruisers.

@TzeffNL Well, in blue planet, UEF frigates are a bit bigger than a GTVA cruiser, so they're not "huge", but way bigger than your fighter. The last time I played it, it had some performance issues, but it may be fixed now ;)

@M15577 FreeSpace 2 is 12 years old but is constantly updated by community thanks to open source engine. It's space flight simulator, not MMO. The Best Space Sim.
This was a good simulator (literally), but it lacked much RPG and fun elements.. don't forget good graphics. XD Freelancer was an old game too but it had great graphics for back then and the RPG elements and free-roam was amazing.
@ronaldli5 The graphics has been taken care of over 8 years ago with Freespace Open. The RPG are not present because this game is entirely a combat simulater, and not a simulater/adventure game like Freelancer

The granddaddy of the genre, the Wing Commander franchise, will always be my first love thanks to its richly developed universe and storytelling but Freespace 2 has some absolutely incredible large-scale battles with massive capital ships.
For those comparing this to Freelancer, they're really very different games with different aims that just happen to be in the same genre and are both excellent and both old and dirt cheap. If you love the genre you probably love them both.
The one thing that the Freelancer people don't realize is that Freespace 2 came out in 1999, 4 years before freelancer came out, so of course Freelancer is going to have things that makes it better than Freespace, but Freespace is has more originality to it, making it a much better choice.
This was nearly four years ago. They're up to version 3.6.12 and it looks much better than this. You should check it out if you're the least bit interested. You can't get anything better for $6.

To be honest, if you want to make an issue of it not being a Sim, you'd do better pointing at the Non-Newtonian physics, and that can be done as well now. It's still not a Sim, but then, most Racing Sims aren't Sims either, it's entirely possible to just get too anal over a name.
Let's face it most 'mining' in space sims involves pew-pewing asteroids anyway.
@HeadShot360IN negative, FS2 is a space combat sim in the vein of wing commander and other great old PC arcade space sims. EVE is on the OPPOSITE end of the game genre, a relatively open sandbox MMO world where players interact with others in trading, combat, or otherwise via table interface. EVE combat are heavily abstracted since u control large ships and because it's an MMO with massive player numbers and latency.
other than the fact that they r both in space, they r complete opposites.
@cero815 the market is simply smaller and different than others.
for example in the console, Ace Combat is effectively the equivalent of FS and other games in the genre except in atmospheric air combat, and judging from Ace's track record there's definitely a market for it even in console.
the only problem is, in the western side all the developers that used to make these games are under publishers now... or dead, publishers with zero insight beyond basic mercantile aspect.

Ships could be invested, shot down or simply left for centurys. could be made with an engine like Gamebryo-Engine. worldtiles=space dungeonscells=shipwrecks/spacestations
@Bl8runner79 The level size required for such a game would overload the capacity of most modern engines, unless you develop for high end PCs only. Gamebryo doesn't support physics-based motion systems, and it can't move solid objects. Just look at ship mods for Oblivion and you see what I mean. Gamebryo is really the last engine for such a game. Might work as an Unreal Project, but if I remember correctly, even the Unreal Engine has a level size limit.
i know these games. they are a 1th step in that direction. while you can leave your ship in x, you cant realy enter another ship per se. You leave the ship fly over and magicaly get teleportet to the bridge. So this makes leaving your ship unnecessary. I mean situations like finding old cruisers left in space for centurys. Get from bridge, get your suit, get out via hatch, find a way in and work your way through the ship. floor by floor only with your flashlight in the deep cold space.
Freespace 2 had had it all baby!!! Was there near the end of the normal server, when many of the die-hard FS2 guys were fighting to keep the game alive, hats off to DW-Suzanna..... who didn't know Suz in that game, lol. The last galaxy squad wars were no longer moderated, the fights would not continue, there would not be another season... Such awesome PvP in that game! I loved running 'Highace's Action Dome.' 24/7 pvp, up to 12 ships at a time with lots of 56K back then, great action!
This video doesn't even come close to showing the current capabilities of this engine. This was... four years ago? Yes, the SCP engine has gotten so much more powerful. It looks absolutely amazing.
I recommend it anybody to play the game and start with FS 1 cause you should play the series from beginning to end and you certainly WILL understand after you have PLAYED BOTH games why its considered to be THE BEST space simulator on the "blue planet" ;).
Sorry buddy but Freelancer is an open world game whereas Freespace is a mission based combat simulator. However if it goes about pure fighting in space then freelancer loses hands down to Freespace. Its simply the case that nothing can overshine a battle between huge ships powering up anti capital beam weapons, anti fighter flaks, missile banks etc. in order to show off a huge space battle. Freelance has therefore no chance to win here in any way to the FS series.
Furthermore the storyline in the FS series IS simply epic to say the least and these greek/mythological touch that this game has (names of the ships like Ravana - a 2346 meters behemoth if I remember well) etc. make the game simply stand out to all the others. I mean come on dude the SSD Lucifer was presented in the First great war like an unstoppable monster as soon as it entered standard space thanks to its shields and the firepower this ship has would KILL everything FL has!
First off NO console game is comparable to a top PC Game of its genre. PC Games are from my p.o.v. ALWAYS better then console games ;).
At the other hand this arguably the best space sim of all times and one of the top PC games in the entire games history, so yes I would say that it is considerably better then colony wars.
However it all always boils down to personal preference and individuality, so if you like it good (then you got a good taste :D) if not...
@ajsknight The problem for me is, i cant hold any preferences as in fact i have never played FS2. That is why i asked. :). Another thing is, consoles WERE stronger than pc for a little while. Quake is from 1996 as is Super Mario 64, and the latter was overhelmingly better in terms of graphic. Same with the ps´s version of tombraider contra the pc version. Shortly after came vodoo with 3dfx but that is another story. Colony wars is tho in my opinion an EXCELLENT space sim. If u havent,, try it
No sorry buddy but if you compare a FPS game (Quake) with a jump'n'run game (Super Mario) ... IoI sorry there is no comparison in this. Its like comparing a plastic gun for childs with a full blown barret M82 Sniper rifle :P. Sorry but here you never will win and we can see that already to those times PC games go rather the way of adult entertainment while platforms like the N64 from those times where tailored also for children and hence offered games that way.

If it bothers you so much, I'm sure you have a volume control somewhere.
To be honest, if you want to make an issue of it not being a Sim, you'd do better pointing at the Non-Newtonian physics, and that can be done as well now. It's still not a Sim, but then, most Racing Sims aren't Sims either, it's entirely possible to just get too anal over a name.
Let's face it most 'mining' in space sims involves pew-pewing asteroids anyway.

@HeadShot360IN negative, FS2 is a space combat sim in the vein of wing commander and other great old PC arcade space sims. EVE is on the OPPOSITE end of the game genre, a relatively open sandbox MMO world where players interact with others in trading, combat, or otherwise via table interface. EVE combat are heavily abstracted since u control large ships and because it's an MMO with massive player numbers and latency.
other than the fact that they r both in space, they r complete opposites.

The story, the atmosphere. The mad heat of combat. The epic scale of warfare.
BTW, I just realized why i just love the Mass Effect's Illusive Man. He's just like Aken Bosch.

@cero815 the market is simply smaller and different than others.
for example in the console, Ace Combat is effectively the equivalent of FS and other games in the genre except in atmospheric air combat, and judging from Ace's track record there's definitely a market for it even in console.
the only problem is, in the western side all the developers that used to make these games are under publishers now... or dead, publishers with zero insight beyond basic mercantile aspect.

You can't actually "pirate" Freespace 2, by the way, as long as you get it from a friend and not a torrent.
The EULA says that it can be freely distributed (I've read it in my own copy that I bought for full price back when it came out).

i would like to see a space sim/pirate game were you could leave your own ship in a astrosuit fly over and explore desperade wrecks/stations for rare resources,items,goods,survivors. level by level, corridor by corridor, cabin by cabin. Only armed with a flashlight, maybe a blaster in hands and the silence of the space. Ships could be invested, shot down or simply left for centurys. could be made with an engine like Gamebryo-Engine. worldtiles=space dungeonscells=shipwrecks/spacestations

@Bl8runner79 The level size required for such a game would overload the capacity of most modern engines, unless you develop for high end PCs only. Gamebryo doesn't support physics-based motion systems, and it can't move solid objects. Just look at ship mods for Oblivion and you see what I mean. Gamebryo is really the last engine for such a game. Might work as an Unreal Project, but if I remember correctly, even the Unreal Engine has a level size limit.

i know these games. they are a 1th step in that direction. while you can leave your ship in x, you cant realy enter another ship per se. You leave the ship fly over and magicaly get teleportet to the bridge. So this makes leaving your ship unnecessary. I mean situations like finding old cruisers left in space for centurys. Get from bridge, get your suit, get out via hatch, find a way in and work your way through the ship. floor by floor only with your flashlight in the deep cold space.

Freespace 2 had had it all baby!!! Was there near the end of the normal server, when many of the die-hard FS2 guys were fighting to keep the game alive, hats off to DW-Suzanna..... who didn't know Suz in that game, lol. The last galaxy squad wars were no longer moderated, the fights would not continue, there would not be another season... Such awesome PvP in that game! I loved running 'Highace's Action Dome.' 24/7 pvp, up to 12 ships at a time with lots of 56K back then, great action!

This video doesn't even come close to showing the current capabilities of this engine. This was... four years ago? Yes, the SCP engine has gotten so much more powerful. It looks absolutely amazing.

I recommend it anybody to play the game and start with FS 1 cause you should play the series from beginning to end and you certainly WILL understand after you have PLAYED BOTH games why its considered to be THE BEST space simulator on the "blue planet" ;).

Sorry buddy but Freelancer is an open world game whereas Freespace is a mission based combat simulator. However if it goes about pure fighting in space then freelancer loses hands down to Freespace. Its simply the case that nothing can overshine a battle between huge ships powering up anti capital beam weapons, anti fighter flaks, missile banks etc. in order to show off a huge space battle. Freelance has therefore no chance to win here in any way to the FS series.

Furthermore the storyline in the FS series IS simply epic to say the least and these greek/mythological touch that this game has (names of the ships like Ravana - a 2346 meters behemoth if I remember well) etc. make the game simply stand out to all the others. I mean come on dude the SSD Lucifer was presented in the First great war like an unstoppable monster as soon as it entered standard space thanks to its shields and the firepower this ship has would KILL everything FL has!

First off NO console game is comparable to a top PC Game of its genre. PC Games are from my p.o.v. ALWAYS better then console games ;).
At the other hand this arguably the best space sim of all times and one of the top PC games in the entire games history, so yes I would say that it is considerably better then colony wars.
However it all always boils down to personal preference and individuality, so if you like it good (then you got a good taste :D) if not...

@ajsknight The problem for me is, i cant hold any preferences as in fact i have never played FS2. That is why i asked. :). Another thing is, consoles WERE stronger than pc for a little while. Quake is from 1996 as is Super Mario 64, and the latter was overhelmingly better in terms of graphic. Same with the ps´s version of tombraider contra the pc version. Shortly after came vodoo with 3dfx but that is another story. Colony wars is tho in my opinion an EXCELLENT space sim. If u havent,, try it

No sorry buddy but if you compare a FPS game (Quake) with a jump'n'run game (Super Mario) ... IoI sorry there is no comparison in this. Its like comparing a plastic gun for childs with a full blown barret M82 Sniper rifle :P. Sorry but here you never will win and we can see that already to those times PC games go rather the way of adult entertainment while platforms like the N64 from those times where tailored also for children and hence offered games that way.
