Pierce Brosnan's best bond movie by far. Although I rather see Timothy Dalton finish his Bond career in Goldeneye like he's suppose to. I think Goldeneye was the last great bond movie in my opinion.
Bond, guns, girls, golden eyes, communism, looks cool - no further intellectualising necessary. (In TWINE, the girls are made of oil. So, you know, it happens.)

As a lifelong diehard Bond fan, I'm very disappointed by CASINO and QUANTUM turning 007 into just another Jason Bourne! @CoyoteTex Craig is the only english man to play him though and he is also ruthless and from I heard in the books he hardly ever used complexed gadgets. On QoS I agree it is bourneish since the bourne director directed it.
Roger Moore is an Englishman. He has played Bond seven times, which in terms of official films is currently more than any other actor. (It's also worth noting that although James Bond is thought of as a quintessentially English character, Fleming colours him with the ancestry of a Scottish father and a Swiss mother.)
Neither Bourne director (Doug Liman and Paul Greengrass) has to date directed a Bond film. Quantum of Solace borrows a second unit director and an editor from Bourne.
Well Fleming still intended him to be very English, so I think that backstory is just to make him more exotic. (And of course, Britain is an incredibly mixed society, so it's not really a stretch.)
I'd say the first attempt to really do Fleming's Bond was with Timothy Dalton, and although I really like The Living Daylights, they never quite nailed it. Daniel Craig is the second try and IMHO Casino Royale is a pretty solid adaptation in spirit. (My favourite's still Pierce though!)
Not sure I like the argument that changing the card game changes the character. Knowing the odds, keeping your nerve under high stakes - all get carried over to Texas Hold 'Em, as well as adding the character dimension of reading the other player, which seems suitably Bondian to most of us. Besides, it's just an update to keep in line with current card playing trends, plus poker was probably viewed as more cinematically workable.
@CoyoteTex Only the Casino Royale parody film got Fleming's Bond, Fleming wanted David Niven for the part. But Craig's Bond has been a disappointment, thank God MGM went bust before they could do another.

Communism throughout history has just proved itself as one thing, a failure. It has consistently failed to fulfill it's core function: to provide for those within it's system.
You can look for yourself what each communist regime has led to.
Lad plural? My exact words were, "The trick is to have a hybrid of socialism and capitalism that temper each other, so that power doesn't slip into an elite few". Unless you're making the mistake of equating socialism with the a slippery slope to the gulag, as so much of American politics does, neither of those is communism.
@CallySaysRelax thsts bullshit because there was no communists state. all the states with a leading communist party were socialist. and btw these states or the system dont failed.if you compare it with the states welth of today for Romania,Yogoslavia,Hungary,or russia or the Baltic states .all these states are much poorer than they were in 1990. the BIP for Hungary for instance declined by 20-30 percent.in Romania for 40 percent. in all these states are widespread poverty especially for old

Communism CANNOT work. It is completely impossible for everybody in a society to be equal, it's just human nature. Socialism, though, I agree, has completely failed no matter what.
@TheConciseStatement yep long live the communist dream and long live the greatest bond ever: roger moore, can you argue with live and let die, the spy who loved me moonraker occtopussy? (well you probably can). long live lenin would probably be more accurate but hey, kicking hitlers ass is always good.
Well as someone who considers themselves aggressively liberal socially, but a left leaning moderate economically, I think socialism is a fairly decent alternative to communism. But whatever political system you prefer, the trick is to have a hybrid of socialism and capitalism that temper each other, so that power doesn't slip into an elite few. In my humble opinion, a lack of market regulation has led to a similar 'Fall of the Empire' effect that the Soviets have gone through.
@TheConciseStatement what i hate about capatlism is inheritance. a child has a head start over others for no reason of their own. two children of the same health and abilities, one richer than the other and has an easy life whereas the other has to struggle all their lives. one is materially and culturally deprived while the other has everything they want from an early age. in my communist utopia, inheritance would go straight back to the state. every child would be a child of the state: equal
Yeah the most extreme example of that entitlement culture is the monarchy, where the Queen is the head of state with an insane amount of property and scary reserve powers, simply for being born into a certain family. Anyway, I'm hoping the Conservatives have backed off the Inheritance Tax cut, greatly stacking the deck in favour of the rich, at a time when we're all forking out for a VAT rise and A QUARTER of public services money is being slashed. "Dark times lie ahead, Harry."
@TheConciseStatement i cant stand the royal family or the house of lords, id get rid of them both very quickly-their a joke. no country has gone through the real communist step which was capatlism then communism eg russia went from feudlism strait to communism-this isnt how marx invisioned. maybe we can be the first. : 0
One criticism I've heard made at Casino Royale and other poker films is that they give everyone unrealistic hands of cards, rather than focus on the players playing each other. I suppose that's because : A, it's more dramatic; and B; the higher hands are easier for audiences to read. Empire recently did a 'How to Win at Poker, the Movie Way' feature. They had scenes from Sting, Rounders, Cool Hand Luke, Ocean's 11, THIS, Lock/Stock, Titanic, Maverick, Kaleidoscope and Cincinnati Kid.
@TheConciseStatement True, then again, picking up flaws is part of the fun. There are very few players that would risk that much money on straight flush odds.
Well it depends on the flaw. There's nothing more depressing than a bunch of IMDb posts bitching about the discontinuity of bike tyres. It has to be something pretty awful and inexcusable before I feel able to join in like, well I guess the one that still stands out for me, is the crew member in blue jeans behind Maximus Decimus Meridius tending to his horse.
But, in reality, The Cold War Bond was hardly set against the USSR. It was always a master villain, like Blofeld or Goldfinger, or an organization like SPECTRE threatening the West, or sometimes also the Communist world, for which they usually joined forces (With Barbara Bach on "The Spy who loved me"). To say he reflected a virulent anti-communist mindset was always a little over the top. Moreover, it seems Bond is more realistic today, with villains hiding in caves.
Maybe. John Glen did about five. Don't know what it is about Martin Campbell. He seems to get Bond right, yet it's been a while since he's nailed anything else. That is, unless you were impressed by Edge of Darkness. (Psst - see the BBC TV series.)
@TheConciseStatement impressed with edge of darkness or depressed? I kept waiting for gibson to put on face paint and change his accent, FREEDOM!!! oh and tell those boys in blue to STOP PISSIN IN MAH BUSHES! They can come use the toilet in the house.
@TheConciseStatement Martin Campbell did produce one of the best bonds in history. Its my favorite, with Casino trailing close. But hey, they've now got time for a killer script for bond 23, and Christopher Nolan (recent batmans) says he would love to direct bond. With muse singing the title theme, DAMN! a great new film. It better happen.
Bond is a joke! Only through the incompetence of his enemies does he elude certain death. Jason Bourne on the other hand, doesn't get caught in the first place. A far superior agent. One on one, he'd waste the 'very flawed' aforementioned. What ya mean it's only a film??? Get him Jas
smutne pokazuje rozpad sytemu który łączył tak wielką wspólnotę państw dziś to już nie to samo jak jest moment kiedy zwiewa flagi ZSRR to jest to dziwny moment :(
Back when bond was good and bond, what the hell happened? (awaits your a noob because craig is da best, you a hater blah blah etc).
Craig's a good actor but he doesn't fit bond at all, he's a thug not a sophisticated secret agent who works for her majestys secret service, where's the charm, whit, dead that's where it is.
I had such a massive crush on Famke Janssen in this movie lol. I love this movie. Definately the best Bond movie around and hell the video game is legend itself lol
Certainly a brilliant title sequence, but far from the best Bond film - very far. None capture the spirit of the original characterization of Bond in Ian Fleming's novels as well as the one's that he worked on himself: Dr. No; From Russia with Love and Goldfinger. Brosnan reduces Bond to a mere action figure - that said, he was better than Timothy Dalton. Daniel Craig is hardly any better, although his first film is watchable - but it is far from Fleming's vision of that story.
@vonVince hahaha I remember watching this as a kid and not understanding the opening sequence. I'm taking AP World this year, and we recently covered the Cold War and the fall of the USSR. I watched Goldeneye the other day with my friends and I was like "OHH... that's what that was all about...."
@Rukishou XD Oh come on, kids love Bond films and Batman, and other franchises that get surprisingly violent at times. No biggie - I'm sure you turned out normal.
@TheConciseStatement Well I watched the first time when I was 5 years old. I remember that I was really pissed off when the film suddenly stopped right after train scene (bad VHS cassette).
How come this movie is never consistent with its guns? In some scenes, Bond has a suppressed guns and others he doesn't? Is there a reason all these guys keep switching back and forth with their guns, suppressed and unsuppressed.
Bond movies are so glamorous. It's amazing to see how they manage to depict the fulfillment of a whole range of powerful male desires. The taste for adventure, danger, women, sex, violence, power, the ability to stand against the whole world... Bond is truly THE archetype of the successful guy.... He's just a pure depiction of male psyche in its wildest dreams!
@yurismir1 When that happens, that will be the end of Bond films as we know it. At least I won't watch them anymore. (C)Rap ruins everything... This was/is the perfect Bond film! A great song to go along with it, too!
Ace film..this was the first James bond film i watched when i was little...I love the film and Iv got the Entire DVD set :D...and Daniel Craig is a good bond.
@XChampaignDreamX Its just really cool all round really, the Songs to the James bond films are brill too...like this one, Live and let die, The world is not enough, Living daylights, Licence to Kill :D and View to a Kill. All amazing soundtracks and the best Bond Films.
Craig is more of a Dalton of today. Bond was supposed to be protrayed as Tough and ruthless who killed or exploited everyone who got in his way. Roger Moor and Brosnan in his last 2 films made Bond seem like a character from a Sunday morning cartoon. I did like Brosnan in This and Tomorrow never dies as that's where he really shined.
I gotta stick up for Brosnan here. Whatever problems his films have, he didn't write, produce or direct them. His performance as Bond is the core that sort of keeps everything running along regardless of how crazy things get around him, be it diving inside an oil pipeline at 100mph or the invisible car, etc.
Similarly Quantum of Solace's flaws really have nothing to do with Daniel Craig. He did do his best with a patently underdeveloped script and messily directed vision.
Yeah I do like Brosnan, This is his best film Imo. I did'nt like him that much in The World is not enough or Die Another Day that much. I think Craig is the best Bond since Dalton and he's trying to make Bond look more like of a highly trained assassin rather than a super hero.
the girl with two heads freaked me out as a child. but this is the bond i grew up with, and who got me interested in getting all the vhs tapes which made a big picture when you collect them all and put the spines together
yep thats the one i still got the tapes in fact. they came out around mid ninties i think and when twine came out they exapanded the collage with the 2 bond girls from that movie onto it which looked out of place.
But the image went like this if i remeber:
Sean connery with his gun pointing out in front of him , roger moore in his suit, dalton holding the sniper rifle and brosnan holding gun up ready
Yeah, all the most famous actor poses. And now I remember that too - Elektra and Christmas and Big Ben in the background were taken from the TWINE poster.
Do you remember if they managed to get to a Die Another Day addition in that VHS montage collection - perhaps with a reversible cover? I've still got the DVD Special Edition (I prefer it to the UE actually) and it had a reversible cover as part of the gradual 007 image.
I had the dvd of die another day, that film came out in late 2002 so the dvd 2003, so i think vhs had been phased out by then. I don't remember seeing a vhs tape of die another day anywhere let alone a spine 'collection' one.
Yeah, I just googled it and as I thought a VHS copy came up on eBay and the like (for the UK at least). But it's only the regular cover that's shown so it remains unknown whether it was reversible or not with the 'Collection' cover on the flip side. I have a sneaking suspicion that it might have been.
I couldn't find an image of the collection of tapes together in sequence let alone the die another day tape, but i wonder what they would add to the spine design
On eBay UK, I actually found an image of the collection of 19 films arranged into the picture - from Dr. No to TWINE. Strangely, the seller is only advertising with the title, 'James Bond 18 VHS video collection - offers considered' with a reserve of 30 quid. Maybe they've lost one or are keeping one back.
I had the VHS Spine Collection it only had the 19, they were like an orangey colour. They released DAD on VHS too, I had it, don't think it had a reversible cover though, as the box was seethrough, keeping with the Ice theme, and I remember there being ads inside for Bond DVDs.
Goldeneye's premise on a basic level is what would happen if Bond had to fight himself. Genious. And that fight scene at the end between Bond and Alec is sick, one of the best, still one of my fav's even considering all the fight scene movies and all that........
It's a great fight - dirty, boxed-in and painful like in From Russia with Love. In the UK that sequence was cut for over 10 years - all the kicks and ear claps and headbutts were gone until the release of the Ultimate Edition.
Annoyingly the MPAA cuts still remain throughout the film like when Bond karate chops Xenia in the car. It makes you wonder what these people do with the footage they cut - do they just burn it to be irritating?
Goldeneye was Brosnan's first and best round at Bond, his other bond films were great, no doubt but they'd have to be after a solid such as Goldeneye. Everything about it's genious the set-up, the story, the pacing, and the villian, the villian undeniably the most memorable bond films have the most memerable villians, something about them making them completly unique and uniquly dangerous. Alec being the perfect villian because he is James Bond.
In terms of a Bond comeback, I like GoldenEye better than Casino Royale, mainly because it stuck to the Bond formula. But, I still like Casino Royale just as much.
Also like how Martin Campbell helmed the return of Bond in both movies after a short hiatus.
I've debated this myself and in conclusion I think that although Casino Royale is far braver (the disappointing Quantum of Solace has made me appreciate it even more), as one cohesive narrative experience, GoldenEye works better. A more traditional and less serious Bond film but I like the villain's angle, and how the film answers the problem of what you do with a Cold War spy after the Cold War. Plus I just love Pierce Brosnan's Bond which has received a lot of undue bashing in the Craig era.
I remember watching this as a kid and being disappointed. It was meant for grown ups, and Bond wasn't in his tuxedo enough. Tomorrow Never Dies, now that one ruled.
I think it works because it feels like part of a movie thriller score - the irony being more so than the actual score provided by Eric Serra. Sadly there's no incorporation of this melody throughout the movie.
Yeah that plane stunt was realistic (talk about over the top bullshit!!!) How does his hair manage to stay in perfect shape after all the crap he goes through? Pierce had the look of Bond but was too wussy, this new Bond kicks ass!!! What cheap crack are you ppl on? The Best Bond is still Sean Connery, when the villains used to get it, they would sure get beatings when Sean was Bond.
this is the best bond theme in recent times, they should let tina sing a few more like they did with shirley bassey, get john barry to write it and compose it like in the old days
This song was produced by Nellee Hooper, which was extraordinary taste at the time, utilizing the trip-hop scene. especially appropriate for an england film. Many years later english films like Snatch would be chocked full of Trip hop but this film did it well before then
Rumors were that Bean was going to reprise his role from Troy as Odysseus in a remake of the Odyssey. I would have been in line to watch that for sure. Bean is a brilliant actor.
He is very good. On the face of it, Aragorn is a pretty horrible character, but in Bean's hands, you root for him to the very end. And in GoldenEye, you really feel he and Bond have a history. That fight in the antenna room feels so nasty and personal. I think if we look back and watch him as Sharpe, you can see he has real star quality, and so it's a bit of a shame he's always had to play second fiddle in Hollywood.
Probably my favourite Bond film. Goldfinger and Casino Royale are close but I Goldeneye gets it. Shame about Quantum of Solace though. Don't think I've ever been entertained to death like that in my life. Poor music, terrible casting (the villain? wtf) and absolutely no plot what so ever. Bond films like Goldfinger and Goldeneye aren't just great because of the action, but because of the plot as well
I think the mistake they made with Quantum was that they humanized him too much. It seemed like they were trying to play the whole jason bourne he's-a-badass-but-he-has-feelings card. Plus GE and CR were both directed by Martin Campbell, an unsung action director if ever there was one (although I can understand why he doesn't do Bond more often, no one wants to be known as the go-to guy when a franchise needs CPR.)
Alec Trevelyan in the film was a Lienz Cossack. British army took Lienz in WW2 and promised to not to sent the Cossacks to the Soviet Union.
Brits betrayed the cossacks by sending 32,000 Cossacks to the stalinist Soviet Union in 1 June 1945. They send those cossacks into the USSR but they also send women and children of those cossacks.
Stalin murdered most of these people. Or I should say that Stalin ordered russians to murdered other russians.
I think we can agree it's not overlooked by the film though ss90. The more sensitive revision of Bond that Brosnan brings to life, has him look quite ashamed when Zukovsky gives him that history lesson. Rather, it becomes an integral part of the plot as we learn of Trevelyan's axe to grind, with the slaughter of his family.
One should note though that Sean Bean was probably chosen for his physicality over anything else, because in reality, he's probably a bit too young for the Stalin era.
Unsurprisingly, that was deemed the most offensive part to the Russian censors during the film's release there. I believe it caused quite a stir at the time.
To be fair, does any nation get over defeat quickly?
The Brits with the fall of the Empire? And that continuously tenuous union between the English and Scots, who threaten a referendum on independence every 15 years or so?
Or Americans with Cuba and the Bay of Pigs? Or how the current public consciousness is still informed by the scars left in Vietnam?
Isn't Palestine one of the most provocative defeats in recent history? The topic inspires fury from all sides on all continents, from those still relentlessly fighting and supporting a campaign, that arguably they know they lost a while ago, to those who demand an evermore crowning defeat than they've already received. (Having tried to word that as neutrally as possible, I'm sure that construction still offends many.)
I would qualify this by adding that, ironically, Germany after losing two world wars, have quietly but efficiently admitted a temporary madness, and are a very regular and decent society again.
On the whole though, I'd say in that most people even feel saddened about wars they know on moral grounds their country deserved to lose, but out of a worrying, blind nationalism, still feel it unnecessary to even mention it might have been a positive outcome. And that's never good.
Must be my imagination - is this slightly sped up ... ?

@TheConciseStatement what i hate about capatlism is inheritance. a child has a head start over others for no reason of their own. two children of the same health and abilities, one richer than the other and has an easy life whereas the other has to struggle all their lives. one is materially and culturally deprived while the other has everything they want from an early age. in my communist utopia, inheritance would go straight back to the state. every child would be a child of the state: equal
longlivestalin1 1 year ago
@longlivestalin1

longlivestalin1 1 year ago
@longlivestalin1 Casino Royale was a decent film if you could follow it all the way. Then again, it's more fun to watch as a fan of poker.
Quantum of Solace WAS terrible, but not because of Daniel Craig. Daniel Craig is an excellent Bond actor if you look at the book by Ian Fleming.
xmentosx 1 year ago
@xmentosx
TheConciseStatement 1 year ago
@TheConciseStatement True, then again, picking up flaws is part of the fun. There are very few players that would risk that much money on straight flush odds.
xmentosx 1 year ago
@xmentosx
TheConciseStatement 1 year ago

TheInstantClassic1 1 year ago 3

Bond movies are so glamorous. It's amazing to see how they manage to depict the fulfillment of a whole range of powerful male desires. The taste for adventure, danger, women, sex, violence, power, the ability to stand against the whole world... Bond is truly THE archetype of the successful guy.... This was bond, craigs one can burn in a fire (awaits flames).
If i want realism i dont watch bond, craig took all the fun and bond out of it.
wesker100000000 1 year ago
Craig is more of a Dalton of today. Bond was supposed to be protrayed as Tough and ruthless who killed or exploited everyone who got in his way. Roger Moor and Brosnan in his last 2 films made Bond seem like a character from a Sunday morning cartoon. I did like Brosnan in This and Tomorrow never dies as that's where he really shined.
NANOFORGE 1 year ago
I gotta stick up for Brosnan here. Whatever problems his films have, he didn't write, produce or direct them. His performance as Bond is the core that sort of keeps everything running along regardless of how crazy things get around him, be it diving inside an oil pipeline at 100mph or the invisible car, etc.
Similarly Quantum of Solace's flaws really have nothing to do with Daniel Craig. He did do his best with a patently underdeveloped script and messily directed vision.
TheConciseStatement 1 year ago
Yeah I do like Brosnan, This is his best film Imo. I did'nt like him that much in The World is not enough or Die Another Day that much. I think Craig is the best Bond since Dalton and he's trying to make Bond look more like of a highly trained assassin rather than a super hero.
NANOFORGE 1 year ago
Pff I had no idea Eric Serra did the soundtrack for this movie, another reason why Goldeneye is so great.

MysterySparkStudios 1 year ago 4
I think I know the one you're talking about. Was it a big explosion filled, collage style picture with the five Bonds up to Brosnan?
TheConciseStatement 1 year ago
yep thats the one i still got the tapes in fact. they came out around mid ninties i think and when twine came out they exapanded the collage with the 2 bond girls from that movie onto it which looked out of place.
But the image went like this if i remeber:
Sean connery with his gun pointing out in front of him , roger moore in his suit, dalton holding the sniper rifle and brosnan holding gun up ready
MysterySparkStudios 1 year ago
Yeah, all the most famous actor poses. And now I remember that too - Elektra and Christmas and Big Ben in the background were taken from the TWINE poster.
Do you remember if they managed to get to a Die Another Day addition in that VHS montage collection - perhaps with a reversible cover? I've still got the DVD Special Edition (I prefer it to the UE actually) and it had a reversible cover as part of the gradual 007 image.
TheConciseStatement 1 year ago
I had the dvd of die another day, that film came out in late 2002 so the dvd 2003, so i think vhs had been phased out by then. I don't remember seeing a vhs tape of die another day anywhere let alone a spine 'collection' one.
MysterySparkStudios 1 year ago
Yeah, I just googled it and as I thought a VHS copy came up on eBay and the like (for the UK at least). But it's only the regular cover that's shown so it remains unknown whether it was reversible or not with the 'Collection' cover on the flip side. I have a sneaking suspicion that it might have been.
TheConciseStatement 1 year ago
I couldn't find an image of the collection of tapes together in sequence let alone the die another day tape, but i wonder what they would add to the spine design
MysterySparkStudios 1 year ago
On eBay UK, I actually found an image of the collection of 19 films arranged into the picture - from Dr. No to TWINE. Strangely, the seller is only advertising with the title, 'James Bond 18 VHS video collection - offers considered' with a reserve of 30 quid. Maybe they've lost one or are keeping one back.
TheConciseStatement 1 year ago
i wonder what hes expecting for them. when i brought them a while ago they were buy one get one free at 12.99 each

Kurty451 1 year ago 4
It's a great fight - dirty, boxed-in and painful like in From Russia with Love. In the UK that sequence was cut for over 10 years - all the kicks and ear claps and headbutts were gone until the release of the Ultimate Edition.
Annoyingly the MPAA cuts still remain throughout the film like when Bond karate chops Xenia in the car. It makes you wonder what these people do with the footage they cut - do they just burn it to be irritating?
TheConciseStatement 1 year ago
Goldeneye was Brosnan's first and best round at Bond, his other bond films were great, no doubt but they'd have to be after a solid such as Goldeneye. Everything about it's genious the set-up, the story, the pacing, and the villian, the villian undeniably the most memorable bond films have the most memerable villians, something about them making them completly unique and uniquly dangerous. Alec being the perfect villian because he is James Bond.
Kurty451 1 year ago

best 'new' bond film so far. Goldeneye < Casino Royale
farhannius 2 years ago
I've debated this myself and in conclusion I think that although Casino Royale is far braver (the disappointing Quantum of Solace has made me appreciate it even more), as one cohesive narrative experience, GoldenEye works better. A more traditional and less serious Bond film but I like the villain's angle, and how the film answers the problem of what you do with a Cold War spy after the Cold War. Plus I just love Pierce Brosnan's Bond which has received a lot of undue bashing in the Craig era.

I think it works because it feels like part of a movie thriller score - the irony being more so than the actual score provided by Eric Serra. Sadly there's no incorporation of this melody throughout the movie.

avlia108 2 years ago

Bond films like Goldfinger and Goldeneye aren't just great because of the action, but because of the plot as well
mancity1000 2 years ago 5
I think the mistake they made with Quantum was that they humanized him too much. It seemed like they were trying to play the whole jason bourne he's-a-badass-but-he-has-feelings card. Plus GE and CR were both directed by Martin Campbell, an unsung action director if ever there was one (although I can understand why he doesn't do Bond more often, no one wants to be known as the go-to guy when a franchise needs CPR.)
umgammer 2 years ago 3

Alec Trevelyan in the film was a Lienz Cossack. British army took Lienz in WW2 and promised to not to sent the Cossacks to the Soviet Union.
Brits betrayed the cossacks by sending 32,000 Cossacks to the stalinist Soviet Union in 1 June 1945. They send those cossacks into the USSR but they also send women and children of those cossacks.
Stalin murdered most of these people. Or I should say that Stalin ordered russians to murdered other russians.
ss90ss444 2 years ago
I think we can agree it's not overlooked by the film though ss90. The more sensitive revision of Bond that Brosnan brings to life, has him look quite ashamed when Zukovsky gives him that history lesson. Rather, it becomes an integral part of the plot as we learn of Trevelyan's axe to grind, with the slaughter of his family.
One should note though that Sean Bean was probably chosen for his physicality over anything else, because in reality, he's probably a bit too young for the Stalin era.

TheConciseStatement 2 years ago

Isn't Palestine one of the most provocative defeats in recent history? The topic inspires fury from all sides on all continents, from those still relentlessly fighting and supporting a campaign, that arguably they know they lost a while ago, to those who demand an evermore crowning defeat than they've already received. (Having tried to word that as neutrally as possible, I'm sure that construction still offends many.)
TheConciseStatement 2 years ago

I would qualify this by adding that, ironically, Germany after losing two world wars, have quietly but efficiently admitted a temporary madness, and are a very regular and decent society again.
On the whole though, I'd say in that most people even feel saddened about wars they know on moral grounds their country deserved to lose, but out of a worrying, blind nationalism, still feel it unnecessary to even mention it might have been a positive outcome. And that's never good.
