We are our own prisoners. We achieve only what we want and fix our minds that such trivial things are what keep us down and with that our mind sees it as such. I don't lay down in bed at night because I write instead...I don't drink because I'm occupied with living, I practice my lines because I have the character in mind that I want to be. My body is no cage.
I think it's about someone with social anxiety, who wants to be accepted by people, but is brought down by his/her insecurities. Probably one of the only songs that has made me tear up.
I always relate this song to my self harm. my mind-or my depression- is the one whos keeping me from dancing with the one i love. in other words, my mind and my depression and my self harm is restricting me from being happy. my problems are all in my head. and im the one preventing myself from getting better. but then again, theres nothing i can do about it.
It's about being physically, mentally or emotionally crippled. Example: One doesn't feel good enough for the one they love or if that person doesn't love them back they believe its their fault. I don't think I need to make an physical or mental example.
My interpretation is that it is of one's insecurity. The feeling of unhappiness, loneliness, even the feeling of being trapped, or in this case the lack of self love that confidence brings. It could be about being insecure in your body, because of today's horribly photoshopped models, or peer pressure, the want to fit in. The search to find the "key" or turning point in which we either fit in or find ourselves comfortable with who we are could be when we are finally "free."
In my opinion it's all about over coming your anxiety, self-doubt (maybe about your physical appearance), and following what your heart/spirit desires.
I love this song. You can interpret it in so many different ways , depending on your situation. It could be about being gay, about losing your loved one, or about hard times in general. Amazing :)
The one he loves is dead. He cant dance with her because his soul is stuck inside his body. She is in another place. And he cannot physically go there. but his mind holds the key.
He tells you all in the words. how can no one hear this?
Beauitful interp. The great thing about truly great music is that we all feel it in different ways - we all take something from it that we feel... no matter what that is. The meaning isn't important, just that it touches us, deep. :)) Thanx for your comment.
The song actually isn't about being uncomfortable in one's bady, it's about impotence. Not dissing your interperetation at all, it's just that that was what the song was written about. But it is a beautiful poem and song, and it is a valid interpretation of the lyrics.
I don't mean to be rude, but do you have a link of an interview to validate this? I'm just interested, Arcade Fire gives some of the most interesting interviews and I really love this song.
It's not rude at all. Unfortunately, I lost the article, but I remember reading it from a reliable source sometime last year. Sorry I can't help more than that, but I didn't really take the time to remember where the article was from. It was just a footnote in my mind from a while ago.
my interpretation: I was just talking to my mother the other day about how sad it was that in more than a decade I haven't seen her actually do anything, her life is so boring, perpetual work and anxiety. I was telling her about how it seems like we all have this internal governer, a personality or scapegoat we use to throw in front of us, in sad times, fearful moments and when we are unsure. It seems very much like an addiction or something, in that you feel like it's a good and bad thing.
@Miasmummy2497 i agree, to me anxiey about the constant struggle of production and not doing anything, good and evil are these boundries we have created due to our minds only understanding patterns and things like that shiz. In our society (well mine, american) it seems we are programmed to only gauge good and evil good or bad, as if life is black and white and ever a shade of gray. We are all we have and that some times mean that we want control, .. condemed to be free we are
my bro thinks the song is about how the band had to cancel loads of tours cause the singer was ill. so his physical (ill) body is a cage for him.and im sure you can work out the rest.
It's actually a poem, but the format doesn't post into the description window. I am not I. I am this one Walking beside me whom I do not see, Whom at times I manage to visit, And at other times I forget. The one who remains silent when I talk, The one who forgives, sweet, when I hate, The one who takes a walk whem I am indoors, The one who will remain standing when I die. (originally written in Spanish, translated by Robert Bly).
Yeah, it's a really sad song but I absolutely love it. I used to be anorexic (well, it's like smoking I guess... you're always an ex-anorexic, rather than completely cured) and this song makes me think back to how far i've come since then. :)

This song isn't about anorexia, or impotence, or the sacrifice of the self for the rat-race. This song is all about...
