Look up PRISON STOCKS....very lucrative....WHO ARE THE INVESTORS???
TYT corporations pay you and pay it right back to buy their goods, so just like a prison your net gain is ZERO. The USA is a large prison, that is how the system was setup. Inflation, no raises, goods get more expensive, land is owned by a small percentage of Americans. It is the corporate model.
@Zooni2 Prison isn't supposed to be fun, no. But prison also shouldn't be a way for corporations to take financial advantage by grossly inflating costs. There's no reason a phone call needs to cost $5 a minute. That's just coportate greed. You shouldn't have to work 5 full days to get one minute to call your lawyer.
Prison is not supposed to be fun we are talking about rapists and thieves maybe if they have no fun in there they wont go back. P.S. the US Gov. approves and monitors private prisons. USA!
@zboggs100 You are assuming these people are all guilty and deserve their treatment (or you are trolling). But if someone was falsely arrested, arrested for breaking an unjust law (arresting occupy wallstreet protesters but not the tea party for example), or arrested for smoking a flower that isn't right. When we have kids getting arrested for farting in class we have a problem.
Please watch my story "TIFFANY LEBOUEF SEEKS JUSTICE" They hid my only evidence and lied about it then they made me "TAKE THE DEAL" or go to Prison for 9 + yrs. This is crazy stuff. They have given me 2 strikes and one more brush with the law of any kind will send me to "PRISON FOR LIFE"..... HELP MEEEEEEEE!
I have documents to PROVE my innocence but no one will even look at it. What is going on with this country???
Addressing the issue brought up by the professor in the video about the option of not working: That is NOT an option at CCA. Either you work or go to school. The company does not like non-productive inmates who just sit around all day and do nothing. They will get wrote up quick if they don't work.
I am a former employee of Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility (TCCF) in Tutwiler Mississippi who is trying to bring about change. TCCF started off as a small prison in Tutwiler housing mininum security inmates. Now TCCF is the 2nd largest CCA prison housing over 2600 of the most dangerous inmates in the country from California while consistently being understaffed by over 100 officers armed with only spray and officials at the local, state and government do NOTHING.
If the inmates don't like it, well they don't have to go to that prison. Let the prisons compete and the inmates can decide which prison works best for them.
we need to do away with private prisons, paying inmates, and public defending lawyers. They got themselves in that trouble, let them pay to get out of it. Im a single mother of three and do not rely on the government for anything! I dont have cable or any other luxury that these law breaking people have but my tax paying money goes to providing such things! I don't live beyond my means so why should the prison system have that option?

@rainreaper122 Well, Norway is a little country with a population around 5 million and that is the reason why you dont hear about the surge of immigrants into Norway. not fair.. not everyone is jail are killers rapist looters and racist .... this is unfair to the most of them who are in for unjust laws built to tame the man from really being free
@privateer013 "A prisoner did something for them to be there" - Do you think prisoners have some rights? It is very easy to turn a blind eye to unfair opression when you are not being opressed but lets not forget that we have all made mistakes and that it could very easily be you or me in that situation.
They certainly don't want you talking to your atty, they don't want you trying to get out at all. Getting out ruins their profit motive, the more time time you do, the more profit they make. This is the NEW INDUSTRY in America today, the jailing of people, especially the poor who have done non-violent crimes. We are in a bad way here, this practice further erodes our justice system, it in some ways is CRIMINAL!
Profiting off the misdeeds of another is the most unmoral thing I can think of. No matter how you look at it the prison is profiting off the stealing, rape , and murder in society.
Well, there you go. The United States of Hypocrisy...so, why is it again that they wanted to separate from Britain? Yeah, that's right. So they could do EXACTLY the same thing as Victorian Britain ... jail poor people and make them pay for basic human necessities ... like proper food for diabetics ... and so they can have free, that is SLAVE labour. How Americans just love slavery. What a backwards, primitive country!
That's true enough. In prisons of Victorian times and before, people had to pay for the prison "amenities". Debtors prisons were popular in Victorian Britain, as were the workhouses which changed from being almshouses to enforced slavery, work in the most unpleasant of jobs until you died (Andover workhouse being one of the worst).
$5 a minute on the phone , that's a crime, that's extortion.
@nvieira100 How about we agree the entire western hemisphere is eastern europe all over again, only this time its a disaster x2 and there is no where to run. Canada does what the french did by slowing "indian giving" through peace , The United States does what England did by using contempt for everything and everyone around them, and from Mexico down to Argentina are the result's of every straight greedy basterd son of Spain; they had a lot of hijo's de la puta madre's.
@nvieira100 they're not poor people...they're criminals, who lose not all, but most of their rights that regular citizens do...its not a place for free housing...i do not however support the phone call thing...thats a bit too much, but comparing this to slavery is different...slavery was forced upon the innocent...
@asmit172 And if you're charged falsely and are held in a detention facility whilst awaiting trial - then what? The USofA is notorious for practices of this nature!
@asmit172 Unfortunately, ignoramuses like yourself have taken over this country. Looks like the sub 100 IQ culture has won. Congrats you fucking moron.
@asmit172Yeah,so everyone in prison is a murderer and rapist? Most people are in prison for drug charges, guy.The problem with people like yourself is that you lack the ability to put yourself in other people's shoes(apathetic). But when you are in a jam you are quick to blame someone else and therefore, you are the"victim".You are the post 9-11 american dipshits that will give up all freedoms for the threat of "terrorism". You are a coward.Wehave 50 year old children living in this country.howsad
The problem is that if prisons are going to make a *profit* then they should be run by the government and this money should instead go into the federal budget. I'm a little confused anyway as to how it's legally possible that something that is supposed to be a part of the federal legal system can be privately run and privately owned. That's kind of like hiring a private judge in a private courtroom.
@gojewla Sounds a crazy system, some people are getting rich on tax dollars.
In the UK Thatcher (continued by Blair) introduced PFI - Private Finance Initiative - Many schools and hospitals have been built by private companies, leased to school/hospital authorities and when the lease runs out the private company still own the buildings, those in them own nothing.
No money up front from the lessees but expensive leases.
@gojewla It's going on far more profusely than people are aware. State and/or federal facilities should be run by state or federal services. I agree - the budget is being railroaded to satsify the hunger and greed of specific companies that think they can get away with this. Start by writing your Congressman and take it from there
the more I learn about the US, the more disgusted I am about this country. I hope europe will never become like the US. I rather die than live in the US.
america's law system is screwed! the bill of rights has been violated so many times it basically doesn't exist anymore. to allow a senate or congress to bend the rules at all starts a huge problem, government institutions should be forced to abide by the constitution as the words are written, not modern interpretations that can be construed to fit what the the government wants. these words should be worshiped and given authority over the words of other men and women.
not only do they charge you an arm and a leg when you make a call, you also get a Room& Board bill. I went to jail for 11.5 months and received a bill for $460... Its not just the private prison its ALL the county prisons...
Prisons are soooooo fucking disgusting!!! Let us Occupy the court rooms! #Solidarity I do not believe the criminals are the ones behind bars. They are the ones who sit on benches and represent the "state" which is supposed to be We the People but really represent the capitalist interest.
I don't think you call your lawyer in prison. You meet with them in rooms and shit. That stuff is collect calls in the jail in our city, and I don't think your lawyer is interesting in paying that.
Private prisons? WHAT THE FUCK? PRIVATE?!! The whole purpose of the government is to have a monopoly on coercition. We are entering a private police state. The next step is going to be private police agents patroling near banks and being allowed to arrest and search people.
@DragAmiot as a Criminal Justice graduate, it gets even more fucked up. They have huge lobbying in this country and our determining our criminal justice policies for us.
Don't to the crime if you can't do the time...yeah...don't do it.
I can't believe how STUPID these people are.....they're in jail. should we give them tea and crumpets, powder their bottoms and rock them to sleep? They're CRIMINALS. If you don't like how you're treated...don't do anything to end up in jail.
If one of these animals rapes your grandmother.....will you still want them pampered?
@Nimby59566 And when you're falsely convicted of a crime you didn't commit, don't whine when you can't get in touch with your lawyer or family. Just roll over and gladly accept your lot as being punished by a corrupt justice system.
@Nimby59566 Doesn't the company we are paying TAX payer money to. Have the personal responsibility to live up to their obligations. Why are they exempt from living up to their obligations. We pay them money to provide a service.
Folks, this is the transition of converting the poor and the middle-class into peasants and peons who would then be forced to toil in a new feudal society slowly erasing away democracy and true capitalism.
I put some money on my nephews books in CA once. The prison took 40% of the money for his upkeep. When you leave money for someone, they just take a big chunk of it. When I was in jail, at least I got meals, toothpaste and soap free. Not any more.
sorry TYT, but i think if someone committed a real crime (and i'm not talking weed), then they deserve a real punishment. this one's justified, though i don't like the idea of the prison as a money-sucking corporation either.
For starter the crimes committed by these people are not stated, so yes they could be people with drugs charges or tax evasion; but even if they are not and have been charged for more serious crimes, it is true that at least a certain number of them have been mis-charged, a real problem in the US especially. Going even further even if these people have committed some pretty bad offenses what good will come from treating them the way they are treated in the US prisons...
...beyond that of deterrent. As a society we should have criminal justice so we do not enact inhumanities upon each other, not institutionalize it, not least for large profit, but enforce methods that are foremost in the interests of our society, these people after all may have to be reintroduced into it as functional members. the scariest part is the taking of ability to converse with lawyers, as what protection do these people have for severe mistreatment, the likes to which would jail others
The outrage is the money that is spent to give them nothing. There are fat cats somewhere getting filthy rich off of the PIC and not improving the system at all. Most busnesses improve, the PIC is not.
Memphis Tennessee runs on 201 & Popular, hands down. The money that is paid to the prisons isn't going to the facility. People assume that the inmates are treated well. The government needs desperately to take over the PIC.
You should look at the stats for innocent people in jail and ones in there for tax evasion
In the case of stealing, do you not see that there is a scale to the level of such or should we cut of the hands of the starving bread thieves, you should evaluate the difference between ripping off a multi-national and a violent burglary spree
Also the people who do crime on drugs need help foremost not enslavement, even killing is not always plain cut, I mean soldiers are heros right :/
@clm51193 The crimes were settled in court but, the issue after the fact. Its easy to dignify the money lost in the PIC if your focused on the criminals but, they have no authority over the dispertion of funds do they? My aurgument is against the people getting rich off of the PIC, for nothing.
Hahahahaha. You're really funny dude. Hilarious. You really think that murderers and thieves are the only ones that go to jail? Hahahahahha. I like you.
@fma891 Actually your right. I take back what I said when were speaking about petty criminals like someone caught smoking pot. But someone that steals or kills doesn't deserve too much in my opinion.
Is it not obvious that we should not have private prisons? This is madness! We've already seen cases where judges get kickbacks for harsher sentences on juvenile offenders. Clearly a "profit motive" for incarcerating people sets a terrible precedent .
That's were people get it wrong because phone calls and visits are considered a Privilege and can be taken away if the inmate does not follow facility regulations. Now when it comes down to legal visits, The law states that they have the RIGHT to legal counsel either thru phone calls or Visitation.
Prisons should act as a correctional facility, so the people coming out don't want to commit crimes after they get out. Would you be more likely to want to commit a crime after being treated like a decent human being or after being treated like a piece of shit? Stupid thinking like "prisons should just be for punishment" is what makes our society shit.
@kope2kope You make a good point. But I think you overlooking the stigma aspect of it. Many people who do get out do want to be a good citizen by finding a job, paying taxes and staying out of trouble. There are those out there who just can't let the past be the past. It's kind of a vicious cycle when you think about it.
Prison isn't about punishment it's about benefitting society, or what is the point in leaving it to the state, might as well catch someone you feel wronged you enough to be punished and lock them in your basement, do as you will because you aren't letting them have access to any form of legal representation
You also assume that everyone in prison deserves this level of punishment during their for the crimes the court found them guilty for
recently charged 10.00 for a 5 minute call from the jail... they tell you that the call is a 10 minute or less...can you see what a rip off this to everyone and dont let me get started again about the ROBO PLEA DEALS that help steal money from Social Security...
Socialize the prison system and implement real reforms that make the system more beneficial for society rather than using it for punishment and profit.
I'm sorry but I can't help but laugh at tyt getting so vehemently pissed off at people who've done bad things getting harsh lockdown treatment. I mean its jail what would you like them to have a private spa? Ger over it there's plenty of innocent people on the outside world without any privileges
Some prisons have big stores where inmates can shop and buy products that the prisons don't provide. Some prisons don't allow you to spend any money and they save it for you when you are released to help get a job, clothes, or a place to stay until you get back on you feet. Think of ten years woth of backpay! My cuz was released after 10yrs and he got $7,000 for the work he did. Private prisons are WRONG and parole offices are wrong because they expect to turn a profit of off inmates.

What a backwards, primitive country!
nvieira100 3 months ago 63
@nvieira100

The problem is that if prisons are going to make a *profit* then they should be run by the government and this money should instead go into the federal budget. I'm a little confused anyway as to how it's legally possible that something that is supposed to be a part of the federal legal system can be privately run and privately owned. That's kind of like hiring a private judge in a private courtroom.
gojewla 3 months ago
@gojewla Sounds a crazy system, some people are getting rich on tax dollars.
In the UK Thatcher (continued by Blair) introduced PFI - Private Finance Initiative - Many schools and hospitals have been built by private companies, leased to school/hospital authorities and when the lease runs out the private company still own the buildings, those in them own nothing.
No money up front from the lessees but expensive leases.
Another way to make rich parasites richer.
DeIville8 3 months ago
@gojewla It's going on far more profusely than people are aware. State and/or federal facilities should be run by state or federal services. I agree - the budget is being railroaded to satsify the hunger and greed of specific companies that think they can get away with this. Start by writing your Congressman and take it from there

america's law system is screwed! the bill of rights has been violated so many times it basically doesn't exist anymore. to allow a senate or congress to bend the rules at all starts a huge problem, government institutions should be forced to abide by the constitution as the words are written, not modern interpretations that can be construed to fit what the the government wants. these words should be worshiped and given authority over the words of other men and women.

about the infringement of the 6th amendment right? yes, it does infringe the 6th amendment.
but any law restricting what you can say, libel, disrespecting a officer, ect, infringes the 1st amendment right.
any law restricting the possession and ownership of any firearm or weapon infringes the 2nd amendment right to keep and bear arms.
any case of botched execution, almost all bails due to prisoner income and extended prison stays infringes the 8th amendment.
see where I'm going with this?

defyingcredentials 3 months ago
@defyingcredentials
For starter the crimes committed by these people are not stated, so yes they could be people with drugs charges or tax evasion; but even if they are not and have been charged for more serious crimes, it is true that at least a certain number of them have been mis-charged, a real problem in the US especially. Going even further even if these people have committed some pretty bad offenses what good will come from treating them the way they are treated in the US prisons...
radroatch 3 months ago
...beyond that of deterrent. As a society we should have criminal justice so we do not enact inhumanities upon each other, not institutionalize it, not least for large profit, but enforce methods that are foremost in the interests of our society, these people after all may have to be reintroduced into it as functional members. the scariest part is the taking of ability to converse with lawyers, as what protection do these people have for severe mistreatment, the likes to which would jail others
radroatch 3 months ago
The outrage is the money that is spent to give them nothing. There are fat cats somewhere getting filthy rich off of the PIC and not improving the system at all. Most busnesses improve, the PIC is not.

You should look at the stats for innocent people in jail and ones in there for tax evasion
In the case of stealing, do you not see that there is a scale to the level of such or should we cut of the hands of the starving bread thieves, you should evaluate the difference between ripping off a multi-national and a violent burglary spree
Also the people who do crime on drugs need help foremost not enslavement, even killing is not always plain cut, I mean soldiers are heros right :/
radroatch 3 months ago
@clm51193 The crimes were settled in court but, the issue after the fact. Its easy to dignify the money lost in the PIC if your focused on the criminals but, they have no authority over the dispertion of funds do they? My aurgument is against the people getting rich off of the PIC, for nothing.

Prisons should act as a correctional facility, so the people coming out don't want to commit crimes after they get out. Would you be more likely to want to commit a crime after being treated like a decent human being or after being treated like a piece of shit? Stupid thinking like "prisons should just be for punishment" is what makes our society shit.
kope2kope 3 months ago 37
