what a wonderful voice. My only concern is, I don't speak german and can give lieder a hell of a lot more character. This guy can speak german and just looks angelic...
hehehe i love that a translator is translating a different language, in a different language :) i love love this!! :) cant stop listening to them sing
Ich liebe die beide Ständchen von Franz Schubert (My German is not perfect)
Terry Wey does an excellent job here.Of the two I prefer the other (Leise flehen meine Lieder) it is quite exceptionally sexual in my opinion and not really suitable for a boy treble. I liked is so much I produced my own translation although I am not a German scholar. If you wish it I will send it to you.
Hearest thou the nightingales Oh! How they call to thee With honey’d sounds so sweetly asking
. Imploring come thee to me They can feel the heartstrings pulling And know the pain of love
Moving with their silvery singing Each tender heart they move May also then thy breast be moved (2 syllables) Sweetheart hear'st thou me And trembling so I do await thee Come, thou'rt mine to be
Trnaslation: Gently hesitating, under cover of night we are here. And with finger gently bent, softly, softly we tap on the loved one's door. But now rising, swelling, mounting, loudly with one voice we call out surely: do not sleep, if the voice of desire speaks.
I absoloutely adore this version and listen to it every day, often many times a day. When the soloist repeats "Leise... Leise..." in such a sweet, poignant and endearing tone, it does something to my soul that I myself can't explain.
Right on! I should add that the vd I like is not this one but another one where the music starts right away with the boys are in the music hall. I also ***adore*** Juliane Bansen's version with male choir. Greetings from a fellow music lover!
Since I wrote I have heard a professional mezzo with outstanding male choir version and a student attempt, not even music students, all girl version 'Standchen by la156' and to me this, with all its faults, sounds the best. The freshness of the girl's voices shines through and they have that vocal edge that choir boy's and male singers cannot obtain on the high notes. I think Schubert's friends were right to make him reconsider. It sounds better with women's voices.
can you tell me where you got this video? i would love to have the full video of this performance of Standchen....anyone have it?? know where I can get this video??
I like this song, I like Terry Wey, but this is NOT the Standchen (Serenade) that I know by F.Schubert. Would you post a video of Serenade and provide the lyrics please, I think you have more sources that I do. I like playing it on the organ and singing it. THANKS!!!
So the text is really a bit "mature" for preadolescent boys to sing. In Grillparzer's telling of the story, this particular girl does not come out, so the suitor consoles himself by saying that after all, sleep is more valuable than desires and gifts. Note that he brings a whole slew of other "men" with him as moral support. What a concept!
I wonder why they recorded it at a half-step lower pitch than written? Anyway, Terry was terrific as soprano, and is terrific with his new group Cinquecento that performs and records Early Music (music written before Bach).
I think it was originally written for an alto and 16 women's voices then it is magical. It is not really choir boy material but better than male voices!
Ständchen was originally written for men's voices, but Schubert's friends suggested that a version for female voices would be good, too. After he heard it sung in treble range, he agreed that it sounded better in the higher range. You are correct that it was not written with boys' voices in mind. The words reflect an old custom of a male suitor going to his beloved's house and singing to her from below in the hopes that she would come out on a balcony and drop a handkerchief as sign of her love.
Blah, I couldn't handle how the audio kept going more and more out of sync as the song went on, so I fixed it and re-uploaded it (it's on my profile).

Quietly then my own songs go
Through the darkness to thee
Down to the silent grove so
Sweetheart come to me
Whispering spires the treetops rustle
By the light of the moon
Of the silent quiet evesdropper,
My sweet darling be not afraid.

this is "Standchen D 920 also listed in a different key as Standchen D921"
Be aware that their is another Schubert work also under the title of Standchen which I believe is D 957.
