though it was funny its not that impressive, the chords are generic, compared to some of the jazz greats improvising amazing solo's on the spot this isnt that genius
@melobeatss it's a song about a damn oven, you can't make it more interesting than that in less than 10 seconds of preparation, give the man some credit.
@basterista It is not staged. Elton is famous for writing songs on the spot--- see also his instant "Leon Russell" song on Elvis Costello's Spectacle...
It was part of a series shown on British TV on the ITV channel where stars answered the questions of other stars. Lionel Ritchie also did it. Don't know if it is on Youtube though..
@CrunchyNutKBar Watch him do the same Inside The Actors Studio and again he wrote a song on The Parkinso Show on the spur of the moment to lyrics he'd never seen that was so good that the host was actually laughing as he performed it he was so gob smacked. It's well known that he usually takes less than thirty minutes to even write his classics.
I can do the same imrpovising on the piano to any lyrics but I'm no Elton John because his melodies are simply the best...
If you can be given any random piece of text, something never intended to serve as the lyrics to a song and you can put music to it on-the-fly, you're entitled to some kudos I would say.
But then, he's definitely done his 10,000 hours and then some, it should not come as a big effort with all that work that he did before it already.
Elton is a genius- yet so down to earth, funny, and willing to please people. at another event someone gave Elton a book and asked him to write a melody to it- and he did
In a lenguage like Spanish, which has much fewer short words than English, I guess it'd be virtually imposible, even for a consumated master as Elton John, to compose an "Oven" song on the spot. Still, a remarkable feat of composership.
This is like watching that scene in Amadeus when Mozart takes that short ditty written by Salieri and just riffing on it until it becomes something extraordinary.
I have a feeling this may have been pre-planned. For one thing, why would Richard E Grant have brought along his oven manual if he don't know in advance that he was going to be picked out of the audience. And if he knew then chances are that Elton John did too. Good fun though.
