The story I heard was that he was supposed to be Bob, but since this came out just after Robert F Kennedy was killed, they changed it to "Blob", because the voice was similar and he was a New York Senator. Don't know if it's true, just what I heard.
Sounds plausable since they did base alot of characters on famous people of the day
I hadnt heard of this character before when I posted (pun intended) my original comment, but I see Blob was a regular character for a while, lasting all the way till the color ads with the box redesign with 'Super Sugar Crisp' in big blue letters.
