@thornhead1994 That's it! You're completely correct. That's the note where identity is realized & accepted as good. That's where awareness begins & growth beyond fear is possible. I've thinking that and writing that for years. That's the best part of ""I'm One." I cannot tell you, thornhead, how refreshing it is to read a like-minded interpretation of this song's most critical element. Thank you! You have confirmed something I've long held & it's so awesome to hear/read it from someone else.
The very first US concert on the Quadrophenia Tour. Same show where Keith collapsed/replaced by the greatest sit-in drummer of all time, the late Scot Halpin, pulled out of the audience to finish the show after Moon passed out on animal tranqulizers and brandy.
every year is the same, i feel it again, I'm a loser, no chance to win. leaves start falling, come down is calling, loneliness starts sinking in but I'm one....peerless
@barryuk52 lyrics that summed up my teenage years. glad i was able to leave those feelings behind. But not the song. It's just too fucking awesome! And i also have a Gibson without a case. LOL!
you're all full of shit...comparing the clash with the who..lol..ur a gluesniffer, as for the dead what and the badbrains..obviously affected you badly...punk rock was absolute nonsense bullshit, it's not even music and the pistols are the only band from that genre worth mentioning...agree that townsend was a great songwriter and the who were one of the great rock bands ever...but to even compare townsend to the likes of roger waters...simples you can't!!!!
@reelycovefaemilltown Actually Joe Strummer was a folkie. He loved Bob Dylan and the message song. That's why Pete loved The Clash. As to the Waters- Townshend comparison, there isn't one. Both are great, but Townshend is a genius. Pete used to know how to tap into the human soul.
I believe The Cow Palace was in Denver,CO USA. If interested look up Barry Fey who produced many concerts there. And yes the song still soungs great almost 40 years since this recording. A fun one to play also.
I saw the Who the first time at the old Chicago Amphitheater in 1973 it was awesome, saw them twice more in 1975 all with the greatest rock drummer of all time.
@stjohntheconqueror what are you talking about that rock n roll died by 1980? What about punk rock? If anything by 1980, there was a rebirth of rebellious and primal rock and roll that was lacking in mainstream bands by the time punk came out.
all over by 76 mate. espcially for the who. Who are you has good tracks on it, well written, but it doesn't cut it. does give you the warm feeling quadrophenia or who by numbers gives you
@MrTriss83 Bollocks, mate. I saw the Who "Bi-Centennial Tommy Tour" in Philly in '76, and it was absolutely astounding how good they were-tight, together, in good voice and on a level of power that shook the room to the rafters. Definitely one of the best shows I've ever seen.
@stjohntheconqueror my sentiments EXACTLY!!! anybody who disagrees with you is full of crap, like, mr. braincage for instance.
rock n' roll slid into a huge depression in 1980. guns n' roses and some other bands have done something to revive bits n' pieces of it (and they're great bands), but, it's like trying to match jimi hendrix or the who.
@nkmcfrln you rock n roll purists are complete and utterly full of crap. The Dead Kennedys, the Bad Brains, or The Clash are just as talented, if not more talented than bands from the 60s.
@BraincageAZ You don't even know the basics about punk rock much less rock n' roll. I know what I'm talking about, you don't. Check my playlists and see if you find any punk or post punk bands or even anything from 1980.
I never got to see the real Who i.e. with Keith Moon. I know what i missed out on.
A grainy glimpse into the historic building blocks not only of modern rock, but modern culture. Thank you to The Who for writing the best songs. RIP Keith and John.
Every year is the same And I feel it again, I'm a loser - no chance to win. Leaves start falling, Come down is calling, Loneliness starts sinking in. But I'm one. I am one. And I can see That this is me, And I will be, You'll all see I'm the one.
I come back to this video often. I love it!! I actually like Roger's version. Hell, there's not much I don't like from the Who. They are simply the best.
I was at this show. No one should open for The Who, or bands of their caliber. I have never liked Lynard Skynard, not because they are not good, just because they were like shit compared to The Who!
Saw them on the previous tour also promoting Who's Next, at the SF civic center. I was 13 yrs. old & my dad got me the last available ticket for $5.50. My brother had to drive me.
Saw them in Oakland in the late 80's for a reunion tour & then in 06'. They still ROCK even though 2 are gone.
its awesome how they let an audience member(scot haplin) sit in on drums when keith moon passed out (twice)dreams sometimes come true for some lucky bastards
The guitar reminds me of Flaming lips-Priest Driven Ambulance with the energy. I grew up listening to this song on my headphones. I wish this can be released somehow, but I'll take this anyways. Because, I'm the one...
too bad the audio quality on this cut sucks-this is another sleeper genius Townshend song from Quadrophenia-the man blows me away with his song writing-it's on another level compared to about 99% of other artists out there. amazing!
This song is one of the many songs that Pete has written that I can 100% relate to! Love you, Pete! Long Live Rock, Long Live Pete Townshend, and Long Live The Who!!!!
Love this album and song! ZosoTownshend07, I totally agree! I love that Pete used his life for the metaphors in the songs he wrote! Long Live Rock, Long Live The Who, Long Live Pete Townshend! Gotta love Pete's white pants! :)
Pete is one of the best songwriters out there. Page and Plant used nature and mythology for their metaphors, where Pete used his life and the people around him. What is it that people don't get about writing music anymore!? Long Live Rock, Long Live The Who, and their lyrics that continue reach deep down into our souls!
Hard to believe it's "disastrous"...it sounds like a band at the peak of their powers. Perhaps if they explained less and played more, the music seems pretty universal to me.
i agree with you, but I think the conclusion is they´re both great and they´re different at the same time, both necessary and on my top 10 of all time albums.
in my mind its relatively easy. Who's Next as released is very incomplete. Its like dinner without drinks or dessert. Quadrophenia on the other hand is a masterpiece, their
best album, and rock's finest. Stuck on a desert isle with
a solar powered surround sound system and just one album.... no problem.
Yes but what a main course! Won't Get Fooled Again, Behind Blue Eyes and the sublime Baba O'Riley. Admittedly, Whos' Next did emerge from the chaos of Lifehouse, but that is Rock'n'Roll, chaotic, manic, sometimes imperfect but always spontaneous. Quadrophenia, though it contains some great musical moments, in my view comes across as somewhat contrived in comparison.
Wicked Pissa! My first concert ever was The Who in 1973 and the tickets were only $6 -- yup, you heard that right. I saw The Who last year and my tickets were $285 each -- times have changed -- but damn, the music hasn't. The Who sounds as good now as they did 30+ years ago. Never Too Old To Rock N Roll!
Another reason that this tour didn't go as well was Pete felt compelled to explain the plot of the Quadrophenia to the American audience who didn't understand nor were interested. A shame, really b/c this is an amazing work of music.
Looks like they're first floating out the stupendous Quadro. I'm guessing its just off-London before a couple thousand lucky fans. Yes, way too bad Moonie doesn't come through better on the audio here. He looks like he's hitting everything like nobody's business...and I mean ever. The whole band looks and sounds fabulous. This is, after all, "The Who"!
Actually, this was a disasterous tour. That's why you never see the footage. The Who Refused to be filmed after some of this. The backing tapes were unpredictable and out of sync.
this awesome!! i love this song live. be nice if the bass was a little quieter and the drums and gutar were louder. thanks very much for putting this on. cheers.
Cheers, my most fav who song and now have seen it live on youtube, thanks..x
