Ahhh, yes, LOADing games in parts 1 and 2 to save memory! Compute! and the Gazette for games like 'Oil Tycoon' and Chess (with 16K expansion; took me hours to type in). For type-ins I had the Automatic Proofreader and BASIC keyboard shortcuts; had to load them in sequence.
Then there were the grocery-store software cassette trays where you could find stuff to buy. Or trading cassettes with friends. Funny, but when I got my PC in the 90s, those cool grocery-store trays popped up again.
This is because the original tape has been read and its data sent down the serial cable to be stored in binary on your PC hard drive. And when it's time to make a new copy, you just send the data back down the serial cable and onto a blank cassette. And with no deteriorated signal, greater clarity and low noise.
I can't recommend it highly enough, though you will need the Conmmodore 64 and an XE1541 cable. But it's just the job to rescue your beloved tapes.
Further on the tapes issue, perhaps MTAP would work
I've found cassette copying via conventional methods (hifi, etc.) to be sketchy at best. This is because it's not making a pristine copy of the data itself, just a lower quality analogue recording of the original tape.
TAPSERV ensures that the data is kept in the digital domain right from the tape image to the point at which the signal is recorded onto a new tape. And it's a digital data transfer from the Commodore to the hard drive.
given the age & instability of Tapes. Have you considered putting a PC cassette player 5.25 bay on your PC & copying the file into a rom format to put on new tapes? in the event the tapes should become so degraded the files contained on them would be lost. Google PC cassette player 5.25 bay. Just an idea ;) Nice collection btw :)
This computer would have been so much better if it had 16k ram standard instead of 4k. If you wrote disk/casette software for it only a few people actually had ram expansion so your software either had to be severely limited to 4k or only usable by a few users. The 4k was only really good for cartridge based software to store variables in and screen ram.
Sometimes i feel sick from nostalgia when i think of the good old days and the Atari 2600, C64 and Amiga era. I really wish i could experience them again like the first time. =(
I had the Vic but I did not have any of those games showed. I loved the games that were only text. I had a few of them like Treasure Island and The Count. They were very good and I would love to play them again.
Are there any EMULATORS and ROMS out there for these text only games???
@twostinkyfingers I had those games, plus Adventure Island, Pirate's Cove and maybe another. They were made by Scott Adams and you can freely download them these days from his site :)
The vic 20 was my first computer and kicked off my gaming hobbie,I think the old man forked out for it so i could master the art of being a computer wizz kid.but it was games all the way for me.anyone remember a game called blue meanies?.Thats about the only game i can remember off the top of my head, although that blitz case looked familiar.
I still have at least 5 of these VIC's in working condition including the games and memory expansions :) Mine was modded with 80 coloms card and extra monitor to view many more text than the standard VIC. This was later adapted by the commodore 128 only.
Sorry the soundtrack was sacrificed in order to boost the resolution. Apart from ambient background noise there was only a bit of shuffling here and there. Glad you enjoyed :=)
Were they called VC 20 in Germany as Vic kinda sounds like fick?

I was a television pirate at the 80s.
And i programmed the test picture of my television station on this thing.
With all poke's.
At my work we had a picture generator from 1000$ from Grundig that gave the same test picture.
Fun ;))
