I called her "Honey" and this very song related to Us twice, first in 1976 and second in 2007. She was my college sweetheart. She a nurse and me a civil engineer.
Have this on my "Bobby Goldsboro Greatest Hits Album". I used this song to help get me through a few bad patches in my life. I can relate to this song pretty well! I like little warble in his vocals! Thanks Bobby.
Haven't heard this song in a long time. Bobby's distinctive vocals and great songwriting takes really takes me back to time. Thanks Jokarilon, you made my night and my 'sentimental trip' tonight!
can u take good care of Madi? like I have for the past 5 years, can u take her to school every day and be there to pick her up - HMMPH clearly not coz u r so important!
My pen is soooo in my hand!! However, still going with "lorrie Morgan's" you've still got 5 minutes!" A must for any woman feeling like i do right now! x
Yes , agreed with all the comments.....Truly another sentimental and moving masterpiece , and even though I haven't heard anyone else sing it, i can't imagine a better job than this...........
Bobby's & Vicki's version are great, but the DEFINITIVE version in my humble opinion, is Aretha Franklin's version from 1974. They don't have here on YouTube, so I'm gonna have to see if I can find it and post it.
I like Bobby but this version doesn't come close to Vicki Carr's version that's also here on youtube. There are 2. by her The amazing one last 2 mins 45 sec and is dated (1969) . OMG she sings the hell out of this song! .
OMG, thank you SO MUCH for posting this....I grew up with the Vikki (LIVE at Persian Room) version.....and before she sings it, she talks of Bobby, and what a great song this is, as she put it, C&W tells it HOW IT IS...."
It's good to hear this song from the guy side.....
I had yet to ever hear, one, 'simple' voice....that could reach into the depths of a heart that's breaking; a soul that has lost its way, and still be able to capture the beauty of....real life
Although Bobby Goldsboro wrote this very sad,and beautiful song, and i am a big fan of his music...it was Billy Vera version of this song( that i had heard for the first time on the radio in the summer of 1968)that i fell in love with. I especially love the way he plays the guitar on this song, and for that, and for his vocals on this pop 43 hit; i will always be in favor over the song writer's (B.G.) version.
YOU KNOW WHAT IF YOUR GONNA DOWN PLAY SOMEONE AT LEAST PUT UP THE VERSION THAT YOU ARE PRAISING... I have listened to this since a child travelling to Florida on vacation and imo it is the best!!! no exceptions
hey,i was not putting B.G.version of this song down,my taste in the way this song was arranged happens to be Billy Vera arrangement,i like it better then B.G.arrangement of this wonderful song that he wrote(Bobby G.) I wish i could post Billy Version for you.
One of the most poignant and heartfelt recordings ever made by anybody. This is the definitive version of a much-recorded classic by the original composer -- who foresaw with these lyrics the future breakup of his own marriage. Amazingly, Bobby's label did not release thisas a single until well after several cover versions had appeared, stealing the thunder from this priceless performance. This did chart anyway in1972, but nowhere as high as it should have.
Was all this pain and heartache worth it? Was it? To never give it a second chance, You've had to have had second thoughts about it, It makes no sense. I can't and will not believe that you don't care. I just don't believe it. Not after 30 years. Why?
It amazes me that anyone can turn out a song so exquisitely beautiful. Bobby Goldsboro had a talent that I appreciate more and more as the years go by.
May female bedspacer kami non who had a 45 of this single which I played repeatedly for days hanggang sa makulele na yung tenga ng mga kasama namin sa bahay. Its so good to reminisce the past. Thanks.
Thanks for bringing back such a great song. Billy Vera and Vikki Carr released cover versions during the same period, but Goldsboro vocals were and are still pure gold.
To all those who like Vikki Carr's version: Do the lyrics make sense from a female perspective? Only if it were the norm for a father to win full custody of a female child in a divorce. How often does that happen? Probably only when the mother is mentally ill, or otherwise incapable of caring for the child. When the song was written, it WAS common for mothers to win full custody of sons, which is why Bobby's version is the only one that makes sense.
Thank you for this !! Bobby Goldsboro composed both the lyrics and the music. This GREAT song has been covered by more than 80 other different recording artists in several languages !!
Vikki Carr's version makes no sense. When this song was written, custody of children after a divorce was routinely given to the mother. The importance of fathers was not as well appreciated as it is today.
Has to be one of the saddest songs

He doesn't sing with enough emotion.

It's only a song - don't get so wound up, the songs not meant to be serious. If you think that way then billions of songs don't make sense.
Andy1981s 3 years ago
Of course the song is serious; it's about the value of fathers in children's lives.
