She sounds beautiful and IS beautiful. I saw a production a few years ago at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London. It is a strange and hypnotic opera, but see it if you ever have an opportunity.
She is nothing but the very best....here for a second on a slightly smoother soundings combinations... I can retreave a bit of Victoria De Los Angeles's Maestria.....my favorite for years...But Miss Fleming still One rare that can manage such easely with other languages for instance her french prononciation is also a complete delight ........
Im hoping maybe she'll do this in a staged production, although it's a dramatic soprano role said to be as hard as The Empress from Die Frau ohne Schatten.
No matter how many times I hear her sing this, she leaves she breathless. Her rendition is so unbelievably beautiful. As is she. What a gift she is to the musical world. And how lucky we are to have her.
OMG thank you so much for posting this video for ALL of us that couldn't make it that night. I would have missed out on such a beautiful moment. It really is the perfect marriage of Renee's beauty and voice with Korngold's music. Brava! I'm speechless.
@Hutch41 Oh good grief! It's "a pretty good effort?" I love you armchair critics. All knowing and smug. This is absolutely gorgeous and technically virtually flawless. The best thing about Renee is the unique smoothness of her tone. Beautiful.
What a splendid, glorious, impeccable, DIVINE rendition! Really, I've never heard anything quite so perfect in a live performance. Only La Fleming can even come close to this level of perfection.. and to all the haters - she's still got it in her!
I am a fan of Fleming and support live opera...I had never heard the Sills version before and really enjoyed it - as well as the Kollo, Julia Migenes live television duet.
The tempo is awfully slow, but she sounds in her element here, but not in Armida. She will never be remembered as a "soprano assoluta", however. You cannot make a torch out of a matchstick. Her performance talents are much smaller than her natural vocal gifts, which are prodigious.
This is what Renee does like no other: when she is able to let her self go and surrender to the divinity of music she draws in every last living being present at that moment to witness what God must be like. I can't think of a single singer, past or present, who was or is able to do that like she does. In that aspect of performing vocal music she is in my humble opinion untouched.
I know this is trivial compared to her magnificent singing, superb technique and artistry, but how AMAZING is that dress on her?!?!?! I think that's one of the best looks I've ever seen on her!!!
Altonahh, Renee does a beautiful rendition of this song, and there is nothing wrong with her German pronounciation. This song is often sung solo. Don't be such a nitpicking German.
My word to who criticise about german ,What do you know about opera singing technic? Do you know how much hard to sing that aria? Do you know how hard job this is'! Judge and write comment are so easy things...Just respect! This is perfectly beautifull!!!!! Renee Fleming is gorgeous opera singer.
The conductor's way too slow, her German could be better, why isn't she working on a more subtle approach by studying the language first? She has some trouble with the "r" and sounds very artificial. In general, it has nothing to do with the situation Marietta is in at that particular moment. And I hate it, when the tenor is missing, because it's a duet!
I'm not judging accents singers have. But being German myself I know that some singers have hard accents which I don't mind. In Fleming's case it's disturbing because sometimes she pronounces the same letters right, sometimes wrong. It gives the whole aria a strange emphasis, that's what I was trying to say.
To me L. Price and even Neblett were more convincing. I'm not judging Fleming's German per se (if I sang in English, you could critizise me!) but here the general impression I have is not the best
@SFT24 Among all those admirers here I don't want to spoil their enthusiasm. It simply sounds wrong and pretty finicky. She can do better, I know but here she would have done better with a language coach, sorry.
@Altonahh10 I'd also love more info on which phrases, words, etc., you're discussing. To my limited German, it also sounds very good. She's known very favorably for her German language, isn't she? Didn't she do her Fulbright there? Also, what do you mean by finicky? Thanks.
@Altonahh10 She has studied the language. She lived in Germany for two years and studied German while being immersed with a German family in the beginning of her career. She's a fluent speaker.
If you knew anything about her, you would have known that already.
@PinkeySherbet I don't have to know her and her bio to criticize once again her strange pronouncement of some syllables. Being German myself I am able to judge that. But it seems that everybody is so convinced of her abilities, that a hint of criticism is out of the question for her fans. Relax, guys, don't take it personally. Fleming is as human as we all are.
Durch das irrsinnig langsame Tempo macht sie es sich selber schwer. Welche Sprache ist das? Esperanto? Von einem Superstar kann man wohl erwarten, daß er bitte etwas mehr an der Originalsprache arbeitet!
@VideosAlcides you really said it! just heard her carnegie hall recital, and happy to report that the voice is still as fresh a wonderful as it always was!
Fleming is in great voice but the song is just too darn s-l-o-w. It's at least a full minute longer than most other recorded versions. Just because you have amazing breath control and can sing very s-l-o-w-l-y doesn't mean that you should. It loses the dramatic tension. Peace.
@timct222 Have you ever seen "Der Tote Stadt" from which this song comes?? She sings it perfectly; dramatic tension??? You have no idea what you are talking about.
Beverly Sills has Renée beat, singing this song in an astounding 8 minutes! Sills is widely praised for her vocal sensitivity and dramatic commitment, but she's rarely recognized for her incredible disciplined breath support. Her recordings of Daphne's last scene and Baby Doe's last aria are all marvels of the possible cultivation of the human breath.
To have seen this performance live...WOW! I cannot even begin to say...Fleming is an angel, and this aria stole the whole evening...No fancy sets (Capriccio), No crazy costumes (Traviata), just an angelic voice and a beautiful song she has grown to make her own...I absolutely will never forget this performance for as long as I live...Brava divina!!!
Lotte Lehmann and Maria Jeritza were first. And they both recorded it, and sang the part in several productions. Decades before Neblett or Fleming were born. Lehmann sang it all over Europe, Jeritza also sang it at the MET premiere of this opera in 1921.
Yes, and Carol's recording was one of the premiere recordings. Not saying it wasn't known before or popular, but I feel Carol's recording took it to a different level of publicity. The whole recording is a great cd.
she is, always was..i met here in edinburgh 5 years ago after her recital. she was electric and breathtaking. the usual stuffy audience warmed up to her immediately and the reaction to her arias were hysteria-like..you are so right..
This is the perfect example of how one can just stand, hands at the side, and completely capture an audience with genuine expresssion and beautiful singing.
How I agree with everything said in all comments. This is ravishing singing from an artist who can spin and play with every tiny sound . And how has she transformed in the last 3 or so years from a beautiful woman into this transcendental creature we see now?
Wow. This is just a perfect example of why she's going to be a "cash cow" amazing singer until the day that she dies. I mean, not only is she freakin' hot, looks radiant in that lavender dress btw, but she sings with such sheer, solid technique, as she always has, in a very safe but very beautiful way. This is actually why that voice has stayed lavish; she doesn't push it too much, she knows what she can do. It's actually grown much more bright and beautiful with age, actually.
At 50, she is at the peak of her beauty. She has lost weight but not too much, her face so beautiful, one can look at her and not get tired. Her voice hasn't darkened yet (unlike Te Kanawa ahose voice deteriorated in her mid 40's) This may another be a signature aria for Ms Fleming as the long and delicious notes suit her beautiful voice. Nothing short of spectacular.
She sounds beautiful and IS beautiful. I saw a production a few years ago at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London. It is a strange and hypnotic opera, but see it if you ever have an opportunity.

Apart from that glottal mishap in the first verse and over richness towards the finale it's a pretty good effort.
If you want to see perfection watch Sofie von Otter.
