The whole issue here is with the surrounding CULTURE of The Last Airbender. Just like Lord of the Rings was centered around medieval European culture, Last Airbender was based heavily on Asian culture. That being said, I don't think all the characters in the Last Airbender needed to be Asian for the movie... a tanned, blue-eyed Latina = great Katara.

Anyway, Avatar is NOT anime. It's definitely an intermediate between Western animation styles and anime. Those words are from the creator of the show, which is THE original source material. He also happens to be white.

I don't even think it's arguable that 99% of the LOTR universe consists of European peoples in a context of pre-Christian Indo-European beliefs. Plus, the names, like "Brandywine River", don't sound too extra-European. If a river were called "Shen Chushu", you probably wouldn't consider that "European".

There were a few darker races and characters, but they were marginal.

So over thousands of years, your skin gets darker, your hair won't grow too much because you don't want hair on your neck because it's so hot, and because of the lack of humidity, your hair will become dry and brittle. The only white people in the main cast are Katara and Sokka. Literally everyone else (Aang, Iroh, Princess Yue, Zuko, Toph etc.) are all not white. M. Night Shyamalan spent a lot of time trying to pick the best actors for the parts, and two of them happened to be white. He even seriously considered an asian Katara and Sokka for a long time, but decided Jason and Nicola were just better for the parts.
It has nothing to do with Paramount, it has to do with M. Night looking for the best actors.

I think thats slightly different. The new Karate Kid is not a direct remake; its a re-telling of the theme of "western kid" learning an "eastern art". This is why the new one is set in China and the kid is learning Kung Fu.
Just like I don't like the idea of the new Spiderman being black (I'm black btw), or Prince of Perisa being played by caucasians; I don't like the casting for Last Airbender.
When you convert a comic/show to film, it should keep some its major elements

No, the cultures are so diverse in the film. the southern water tribe is inuit people, while the northern is caucasian people. Sokka and katara's grandmother came from the northern tribe so they would have caucasian heritage. jst be glad that someone actally took the show that sewrious to take it to the next level.

@paddotk For LOTR, Norse creatures as elves, dwarves, and frost jötnar are just a few examples. Not to mention the descriptions of the characters appearances (pale, red-bearded, flaxen, etc.). I don't even think it's arguable that 99% of the LOTR universe consists of European peoples in a context of pre-Christian Indo-European beliefs. Plus, the names, like "Brandywine River", don't sound too extra-European. If a river were called "Shen Chushu", you probably wouldn't consider that "European".

All Avatar had was a culturally Asian setting. I'm merely an advocate for smart casting. LOTR could NOT have had an all-Asian cast. The book very clearly described the characters. There were a few darker races and characters, but they were marginal.

Race is not important. Why? Because race is nothing but how people adapted to a certain location. For example, Africa is a very hot, and not a very humid place. It also gets alot of sun exposure. So over thousands of years, your skin gets darker, your hair won't grow too much because you don't want hair on your neck because it's so hot, and because of the lack of humidity, your hair will become dry and brittle. The only white people in the main cast are Katara and Sokka. Literally everyone else (Aang, Iroh, Princess Yue, Zuko, Toph etc.) are all not white. M. Night Shyamalan spent a lot of time trying to pick the best actors for the parts, and two of them happened to be white. He even seriously considered an asian Katara and Sokka for a long time, but decided Jason and Nicola were just better for the parts.
It has nothing to do with Paramount, it has to do with M. Night looking for the best actors.

the original kid was white. that doesn't matter though, the theme is the classic "western" kid learning "eastern" martial arts to better his life all around. plus, if anything, people should be worried about a chinese guy teaching kung fu when it is called "the karate kid" hollywood just wants money. they assume most people are too dumb to realize that kung fu and karate are diffrent. they market off the name because it is worth a lot.

I think thats slightly different. The new Karate Kid is not a direct remake; its a re-telling of the theme of "western kid" learning an "eastern art". This is why the new one is set in China and the kid is learning Kung Fu.
Just like I don't like the idea of the new Spiderman being black (I'm black btw), or Prince of Perisa being played by caucasians; I don't like the casting for Last Airbender.
When you convert a comic/show to film, it should keep some its major elements

the only reason nobody cares about that because the karate kid could play as anying races boy or girl it doesn't matter. remember the story of the karater kid is about a new kid goes off to a new town and gets pick on by bully and in the end he or she learn karate and win the day. as for the last airdbender they needing to put asian charcheters for the main charcheters.

No, the cultures are so diverse in the film. the southern water tribe is inuit people, while the northern is caucasian people. Sokka and katara's grandmother came from the northern tribe so they would have caucasian heritage. jst be glad that someone actally took the show that sewrious to take it to the next level.
