Caballe has always been a very uneven singer: beautiful voice, but a one-trick pony - that gorgeous pianissimo of hers - that said, her coloratura is awful and her diction is atrocious; even this early in her career she's vocalizing and inventing lines rather than enunciating the text (1:35); still, she's far better than Netrebko and Fleming
Although she doesn't quite convince me this is a mad scene, and is conducted a bit fast, it is really a superlative sing. Salle Pleyel, Paris 1966, and she is pregnant here, in a beautiful sari, entering her vocal prime. Perfect control of line, tone and expression, and spot-on high notes. By the mid-1970s she had aquired more heft in the low notes but also the bad habits of exaggerated high pianissimo, playing with the written tempo, and laziness in articulating all the words in the libretto.
Despite being 6 months pregnant she is looks slim! She should have stayed slim. Anyways as great as Caballe is she has a tendency later on to sing in one mode- legato and portamento with little fioritura and endless pianissimi- it's great when you hear it but then..it beomes repetitive eg her Madama Butterfly recording. It breaks the flow of the drama but here she is fantastic! Fire and drama aplenty. This is Monse at her absolute prime.
It is to her credit that this concert even happened as she was already six months pregnant and really not well at all, yet you would never know by this performance, awesome, and yes i am a fan!! I appreciate beauty of voice and hers was remarkable!
@TheMrMarilyn. I love Callas but there was life after Callas. La Divina herself was fans of the singers that came after her - Caballe, Sutherland, Scotto, Nilsson. I thought this was beautifully sung and she is not "being Callas". She's just being Montserrat. I love this aria as sung by Callas as well. I dont play favorites. I just hate how opera fans play favorites. Each opera singer has a unique and special voice
@MastersoftheOpera So true -- Callas greatly admired Sutherland. In fact, after Callas heard Sutherland's "Lucia," she (Callas) never sang the role again.
@calaf75 Ultimately,it's the individuals own choice of preference,no matter what!!You have to let people say what they feel though...that's how we communicate...LoL!!
This is glorious singing., though surprisingly the tempo is less spacious than Callas's versions. She doesn't quite plumb the depths as Callas does, but she has other purely vocal qualities - the sheer beauty of the voice is not in question. And let's not forget that Caballe and Callas had a great mutual appreciation of each other.

She does sing beautifully - but she could be singing a shopping list for all the emotion. The notes are there - true. BUT - not a mad woman. Someome below says 'sweet' - EXACTLY. In this role I want the mad raw Callas please.
You are so basic!!!....and idiot!!!
