Is he alway that hyper and edgy around people? What happens to the dog after you retire, does he retire and live with you or will the military work him until he dies or they decide to put him down?

After a certain age they are deemed non adoptable or adoptable and if the are adoptable the new owner/Handler will receive a form that states that the dog may still respond to some commands and might cause a disturbance. If it is deemed non adoptable it will receive some last paperwork before being put down.

If the MWD is deemed adoptable, we will first go to the most recent handler and previous handlers. If they are unable to adopt the MWD, the dogs are put up for adoption to other suitable owners - it is a rigorous process that includes interviews and site visits potentially. If the dog is not a suitable for adoption (ie too dangerous or too sick) it will be humanely euthanized.

When a Military Working Dog is deemed to no longer perform at the required level to accomplish his/her job, then the MWD goes through a disposition process. Potential causes do not include age, but do include things that many associate with aging, like arthritis. Other conditions include chronic, noncurable disease processes that alter exercise tolerance (like a heart condition for example). If these are not life threatening, the MWD is evaluated to see if it is an adoptable.

Those dogs are really loud in real life. I have a buddy that works with the AF working dogs and he had his dog, Kojo, bite me one time with that jacket on and that was more frightening then any DI I have ever met. You don't just fall down, they pull you down!!!
