I love her explanation in the beginning.... she speaks of Woodstock and CSNY in a very matter of fact manner, and both turn out to be historic. She is chill.
All the Reginaholics who demand that Regina Spektor songs be recorded as just piano and voice should consider this beautiful recording. It is, indeed, nice to hear this as piano and voice, but doesn't your head want to fill it in with all the other material the way it sound on Ladies of the Canyon? Seems to me that both versions have merit and we are lucky to have them. Same goes for Regina and the way she both performs and records her music.
I received this album for my 16th birthday in 1971, and I played this song (and all the others on the album) until the grooves wore out. I found it today on YouTube because for some reason I've been singing this song for the past 2 days. I think the words are perhaps even more relevant today than they were 40 years ago. Thank you Joni for writing this "little song for your friends to sing."
Joni has been part of my life for voer 40 years now..this song especially..I had been to Yasgur's Farm many times during the 60's leading up to Woodstock while staying at my grandparents summer home just 4 miles from Woodstock/Yasgur's Farm..I sure miss those simple times..PEACE
whoa zero dislikes, should i hit the thumbs down and piss off you stupid mother fucking superficial, socially and individually insecure tards who are more concerned with what people think about what you think because you need constant reassurance that what you like is okay because your fucking pussy scared that you might not fit in. What the fuck does someone you will never meet not liking something have to do with you god damn fucking panzy.
I like Paul Rodgers, but does anybody else think that when he was In Bad Company and wrote the tune titled bad company that he could have listened to this song like twenty minutes before hand?
I think I found my Life's "Theme Song" this song does make me want to cry knowing back on everything going on during the Sixties and Seventies. Woodstock as a beautiful thing, 3 days of Peace, Love and Music. And I think she's right, we are Stardust, We are Golden, and we got to get our selves, Back to the Garden. <3
You are thinking of Carbon Mon/Dioxide. I always mix up the two. Carbon is the basis for all life, every living thing is made up of it, hence why Carbon dating works (more or less). Although for accuracy's not all of life, Nasa recently discovered an arsenic based life form.
I wasn't born till three years after this was recorded, but I've spoken to people who were at Woodstock, and from what I understand Joni nailed the experience like no one else, and she wasn't even there.
There will never be another voice like hers. Never.
lifes biggest mistake? her regret for not beiing at this festival could fuel an album.. i think she is part angel, and god didnt wish to soil joni with such a hedonistic, multi sensual best ever festival of everything that has ever been fun since man could walk upright party..
Her haunting 'Woodstock' has always been my favorite over those by CSNY and Matthew Southern Comfort but her slower 'Both Sides Now' sung withe the London Symphony Orchestra in the later years sent chills up my spine because it reminded me of this earlier work. Thanks for uploading this. And no dislikes so far, wow, a first!!
Thank you for posting this! Wow, the way she sings! I love this song since I knew it from the album "Shadows and Light" (1980) So touching, the lyrics, her voice, the way she looks while singing... One of the greatest artists. - By the way, there is a very touching and groovy version by Tuck and Patti, maybe you can find it on YouTube.
I can't believe she didn't get to play at Woodstock, her music would have been the ultimate soundtrack, it's so beautiful, pure and fairytale-like. I think this version is great I like the vocal variations.
Not only permanently influenced the course of my life, perhaps is the single most terse summation of the history of a generation. Give yourself 6:09 min. of audience with a storytelling master.
I think she was (and still is!) also great in the later years, her voice became kind of "grown-up", I love her later albums like Hejra, Shadows and Light, Wild things run fast, Night Ride home ....
WOW!!! What a performance. Joni sings "Woodstock" here as well as she recorded it on the original album. Thank you for all these songs from the 1970 BBC concert. Would that have been great to attend or what? Had I somehow been able to meet Mizz Mitchell at that time, I'd have insisted that we be married immediately. No doubt she would have run for her life! And the rest is history.
joni wasnt allowed to go to wodstock, she said on an interview i saw that graham nash ,her partner, said she should not go, he was concerned for her ...
A Special Place.......A unique Time.......Classical beauty...........
Could we start again please!

She mentions we are million year old carbon.
Now science has been changed since I was at school and carbon is a polluting toxic gas caused by humans. Yeh right.
