Its only instrument is a photometer, whose purpose is to continually monitor the brightness of more than 145,000 stars in a fixed field of view. This data is analyzed to detect periodic fluctuations that indicate the presence of extrasolar planets that are crossing the face of their star(s). Thus, it's math, not photography, at work.
