  • Really bad hardware specs, a little more power should make it even more responsive, still nice work.

  • do you need to view in darkness, can you use multiple cameras? Also do you not need to modify the lcd screen (assuming there is no FFC issue), as in, just put camera in place with other computer components, open up app and work? Me confuzzled. Do you need IR leds around edge either? Many thanks, good work.

  • @Owener94: Not exactly in total darkness. With CCV 1.3 from nuigroup, u can use multiple cameras. I didnt modify my LCD and my LCD doesnt have FFC issue, I just disassemble the LCD and put accordingly to fit the table. If you use FTIR method, then you have to put IR LEDs around the acrylic edges.

  • wouldn't be better to just be stupid like everyone else and buy an iPad?

  • @drakesolar: iPad is nice and I like it too. I would like more the things that I constructed myself :D

  • I've been reading up on how to build a FTIR table all week. I've actually started looking for material, because building one is going to happen! I noticed you did not use a projector... how is this possible? I haven't been able to find information on building one without a projector, yet!

  • @crunksamm: From what I know so far, FTIR table can be constructed using projector or LCD screen. It is possible to build one without using projector, which is using LCD screen as what I done.

  • @alextan87 So you just bought an LCD screen? or is that something that I need to look into and research as well...

  • @crunksamm: Yes, I just bought a LCD monitor (Samsung 740N), and disassemble it. You need to know which LCD have no FFC issue (mine dont have), check the LumenLab LCD database to see which LCD monitor have no FFC issue.

  • @crunksamm I would also like to know this!!

  • This is really amazing,

where did you get all the software from ?

  • @klautfritz: You can get those from softmt. com

  • now really...im sorry but...WHAT IS THAT???!!!

  • Does it work wneh i torn the light on in the room?

Or i need a dark room?

  • I tried with light both direct and indirect shining from top of the screen.

For direct case, it for sure will affect the gesture recognition.

For indirect case, the gesture recognition still works well if the brightness of the light is not too strong.

  • we´re building the same in our project-week in school.

    its very cool!!

  • heyy can you just buy one of these?

  • hey doesnt the LCD require a coolin fan right across its lateral axis...?

  • Sorry for the late because before this I can't post a single comment or reply in Youtube.

The LCD doesn't really require a cooling fan as it doesn't generate that much of heat that will damage your setup. I put because most of my parts are placed inside a closed box and therefore it will be better to have air circulation system.

  • wow

    great project

i'm actually building one myself, but we've still got problems with the blob recognition through the lcd. We're using diffused illumnation.

You should try and add one of the backlight diffusers again, so one can't look "into the box" while the display shows white and the brightness is more even.

    great job, like it...

  • Did you really use 30 LED's?

Won't that make it excessively hot?

And also, did you figure out how to solder the LED's from NuiGroups? Cause I want to make this, but I would get totally lost for a while when it comes to the specifics there.

And where'd you get the acrylic/what was behind the extra power supply? Did you have one for the computer parts and one for the LED's, both inside the box?

Sorry for the questions, but you seem fairly knowledgeable in this field, obviously...

  • I saw your comment but I just can't post comment or reply previously, I dunno why!

Yes, I really use 30 IR LEDs, which are the combinational of 2 arrays of 8 LEDs and 2 arrays of 7 LEDs, so total 30 LEDs.

They are just a bit warm, not hot. Total power dissipated in the 4 arrays are around 4.82 Watts. I followed the wiring diagram and resistors suggested by led*linear1*org / led*wiz (replace * to .) for my LEDs arrays design and soldering.

  • I get my acrylic from one of the acrylic selling shop in my country.

I did have one for my desktop computer and one just for those LEDs, so they are two different power supply. There is reason why I do not want to power up those LEDs using the same power supply with my computer parts is because if something happened on my LEDs for example short circuit, then it just happens on the other power supply, but not the one you using for your desktop computer to prevent damage to your computer parts.

I am currently a student in Electrical and Electronic Engineering field, so I know a bit on electronics stuffs.

  • @ CrazyEngineerAsh: My next plan is to apply Rosco Grey to further reduce background infrared from disturbing my blob recognition. Also will roll a compliant surface to make the touch more sensitive.

@ normixxxx: I built my own plan and design, which took me few days.

  • cool...where you get those plans to build?

    such thing? i liked it...it' s AMAZING!!!

  • Great stuff, Alex! What is your next plan after this?

  • what software did you use

  • video dj's should use this for more organis presentations... you could drag and drop effects or simulations etc... good work dude

  • ur mother should use this to use the iron or watch movies while she cook shows or for more oranis presenations when pointing out something to the family etc....

  • But where are the IR lights ???

    And great job ;)

  • It doesn't look great but I commend you for your efforts.

    Well done.

Next step is to make it look presentable!

  • what software did you use?? plz tell me

  • wow alex. great work there.

  • Awesome just goes to show the mind is the only tool to create our own paradise.

  • WOW....alex....u done an excellent job..

    Amazing!
