@rich1051414 He could have avoided becoming mainstream. He could have refused recording contract and stuck to playing clubs, block parties, whatever. He would probably still be alive and maybe fulfilled. Perhaps it was apathy and spinelessness that kept him from considering no as an answer. He allowed himself to be exploited by the industry and he did not realize it until it had happened. It happened to PJ too, but they walked away and said "it's our way or no way at all".

Eddie vedder and kurt cobain were both very good artists. Alot of people put the two bands into the same generalized 'grunge' catagory, but they were very different bands. Kurt actually had a unhealthy hatred for popular culture, so any band as popular as pearl jam wouldnt make sense for kurt to admit liking. I always found it strange a man who hated popular culture with such a passion became a pop culture idol.

There is a one clear difference between Nirvana loyalists and PJ fans. It's called "education". Every greasy, couldn't make it through high-school, drug addict theif that I know prefers Nirvana. Whereas the PJ fans that I know are intelligent, thoughtful, selfless people.

I was 14 years old when these 2 bands hit the spotlight, and I liked Nirvana very much until I heard PJ. I just related to them more. Thinking back I am not sure what there is about Nirvanas music to relate to, and that is probably why I don't like them as much. In my experience, people who don't like PJ are just not that intelligent.
@NoOneWantsToDie I know!! The sad truth is that the media likes to turn everything into a competition. In late 80's Seattle, the bands were all very supportive of eachother. It wasn't until the media explosion that this was an issue, because the media knows conflict and competition sell papers. The media invented the rivalry and and the bands actually were naive enough to believe it. That said, I like both bands as well, but Pearl Jam has always been a better band on so many levels.

I personally don't listen to Nirvana as much anymore. Still listen to Pearl Jam a lot. Pearl jam just seems more diverse and memorable to me. Nirvana didn't get that chance to create more music. I think that's the only reason. I still enjoy the old songs from time to time.

Honestly, who gives a fuck about what Kurt thinks(thought), the only message he really left was that the easy way out is to blow your fucking brains out, and people vote him man of the year and other nonsense.
I give it that he was a good songwriter, but there are other good songwriters who also had a hard time, got through it and are still here with us today. Should Kurt be remembered for his music? Absolutely, but people shouldn't make such a big deal about his death.

He would probably still be alive and maybe fulfilled. Perhaps it was apathy and spinelessness that kept him from considering no as an answer. He allowed himself to be exploited by the industry and he did not realize it until it had happened. It happened to PJ too, but they walked away and said "it's our way or no way at all".

Eddie vedder and kurt cobain were both very good artists. Alot of people put the two bands into the same generalized 'grunge' catagory, but they were very different bands. Kurt actually had a unhealthy hatred for popular culture, so any band as popular as pearl jam wouldnt make sense for kurt to admit liking. I always found it strange a man who hated popular culture with such a passion became a pop culture idol.

I think when Kurt says he never liked their band he is also talking about Mother Love Bone. This makes sense bc you could still see that hairband "larger than life" attitude in Andy Wood. After 20 years of Pearl Jam I feel like I have 5 best friends, not 5 idols or whatever. They are just regular guys, and that is what they wanted to be. Eddie redefined what a rockstar is.

I was 14 years old when these 2 bands hit the spotlight, and I liked Nirvana very much until I heard PJ. I just related to them more. Thinking back I am not sure what there is about Nirvanas music to relate to, and that is probably why I don't like them as much. In my experience, people who don't like PJ are just not that intelligent.

It wasn't until the media explosion that this was an issue, because the media knows conflict and competition sell papers. The media invented the rivalry and and the bands actually were naive enough to believe it. That said, I like both bands as well, but Pearl Jam has always been a better band on so many levels.

I personally don't listen to Nirvana as much anymore. Still listen to Pearl Jam a lot. Pearl jam just seems more diverse and memorable to me. Nirvana didn't get that chance to create more music. I think that's the only reason. I still enjoy the old songs from time to time.
