One sign of a true master or genius at any craft - creative or otherwise - is how amazingly (seemingly) effortless he/she displays their talent. How can anybody who has ears that can hear and says they appreciate/love GREAT music not be stunned by this song and performance?? Wannabees stay away!!!

This is a song of such lyricism, beauty and joy! In some live recordings, bootlegs, he introduces it as "a song about being loco, a song about being young, a song about being in love" or " a song about playing in a band". Such deep feelings in such a beautiful melody. The final solo is nothing but exhilarating! Thanks for sharing!
sat in front of this solo on vhs for hrs learning the guitar... picking out the studio parts and various live add ins from alchemy etc and the improvisations...7.15-off key run, 7.25 background piano, 8.46 "that" run, 8.56 chord progression, 9.17 bend and MK's expression - and it all just bleeds nostalgia. wow
I think this is one of the greatest songs ever created. It has left a lasting impression in my life. I first heard it when I was only 7 and the ending solo still uplifts me. I have listened to alot of music over the years from mainstream pop to black metal and no song can compare to this :)
I love this song! I got into Dire Straits in late '85 when I borrowed Brothers In Arms on tape from a friend. 1986 will always be special to me because of the Straits and I love Tunnel of Love from Making Movies. It reminds me of my girlfriend back then when we were two young lovers! Aah the memories of those long lost days many years ago! 'The big wheel keep on turnin, neon burning up above. And I'm just high on this world, come on and take a low ride with me girl. On the Tunnel of Love!
@22061973auke Actually you can compare talent with a guitar, and Mark Knopfler is much better than Kurt Cobain. The thing that would hard to compare is Dire Straits and Nirvana.
@HIGGLEFORTTOPALIS Curt did a totally different thing with his guitar. He a had a new and raw approach to music. You could compare with car sports. Curt is best in rally, Mark does F1. They are both champions to my opinion.
@auptt even jerry cantrell from ALICE IN CHAINS, who saw nirvana in the early days in seattle said his 1st impression of cobain was, WOW HES GOT GOOD SONGS BUT WHAT A SHITTY GUITARIST!!!! cobain was a good songwriter, no doubt, but mark knopfler is 1 of the all time great guitarists/ musicians/ songwriters!!! its not even a contest!!!! cobain was not a great musician!!! knopflers amazing!! LONG LIVE REAL MUSIC, LONG LIVE ROCK N ROLL!! PEACE!!!
There's no words to describe his music. Listened to his song once, and fell instantly in love, 2 days later, got all albums and concerts for my ears :)
I've seen a few 'Top Guitarists' lists, and nearly all of them have Kurt Cobain as a better guitarist than the brilliant Mark Knopfler. I'd love to see Cobain make the guitar sing like this!
Does anyone have a high quality of this???? I still have this entire concert on VHS and its one of my most prized possessions but the picture quality and the sound isn't what it used to be. I'd kill for a better quality copy - I've even rung Channel 9 and the Australian publicists for Dire Straits at the time to see if they've got a copy but no luck....
@BaileyFS2010 I also have this on VHS as it was free to air and recorded it and have the same issue with sound and picture quality!! Would pay good money for this in HD.
I soo remember this gig. It was the biggest thing in Australia at the time. It even streamed live to our TV sets (which back then was almost unheard of). What memories!!!
P.S. This line up with John Illsley (bass),Terry Williams (Drums), Jack Sonni (Rythm Guitar), Guy Fletcher & Alan Clark (Keys) and Chris White (Sax/Flute) was the best ever.
How I wish they would reform and do a re-unnion tour. Please Mark K, come back to Australia!!
@afoustic You forgot to mention that this event was similcast with FM stereo radio as well. I went out and bought a brand new radio just for this occassion. Every bit worth it.
@afoustic Sad to say my friend it is unIikeIy. Mark tours on his own, I am going to see him in the Manchester Evening News Arena on Oct 10 with Bob DyIan. The remaining band members now tour as "The Straites" with a replacement for Mark. I wiII post again after concert to Iet you know if he stiII "has it". He is 62 now but I am reaIIy Iooking forward to it.
@stewartshedden As promised. Mark was brilliant but he under-carded to Bob DyIan who was awfuI. Mark has returned tro his foIk roots, so anyone expecting to just hear dire straits wouId be disappinted. However, his version of foIk isnot too far removed from his Dire music. OveraII, briIIiant, with a couple of dire songs in for good measure. Best advice is too wait untiI he tours aIone. I used to Iove DyIan and stiII do, but woud never watch him Iive again. Mark stiII has it!!
@mustsilm Agreed. Many say that Alchemy's version of Tunnel of Love is best. The vocals i think was better but this here,... the solo at the end is the ultimate best for me. I still listen to this every day
mark knopfler is fore teh win! and for all you douches crying about him being a homophobe, read the fkn lyrics. he's being satirical in "money for nothing." it's a parody of douches judging elton john. christ. y'all make me sad for humanity.
@9missClaire Yeah! Great lyrics, the cool slow break toward the end with the soulful solo. Here's a story: It was 1979 and I ws living in Irvine, CA. Woke up and turned on the radio and was getting ready to go to work and I head something that really grabbed me - it was The Sultans of Swing. I thought it was Bob Dylan! The pure Fender Strat sound and the driving rhythmn was something I hadn't head in years. Been a Dire Strait/Mark Knopfler fan ever since. This song is my time reference of 1979!
@panzermick1 - Gee, I'm envious. I remember as a 17 y/o kid doing his HSC who'd only gotten into the Straits a few months earlier, how excited I was when Channel 9 and Triple M announced they were simulcasting this concert. The night it came, I locked my parents out of the loungeroom so I could tape it on VHS and at the same time, tape it off the radio. I was shattered several weeks later though when some a-hole broke into my car and stole the cassette tapes that I was listening to non-stop .
This is music man. Can't believe rappers and other like Jlo, britney or any mediawhores or whatever call them musicians. This is music by heart. MK makes it look so easy to play the guitar.
@toby968: Mark is not improvising. His mates cannot read his mind to figure out what chords to play to maintain harmony. He is playing way to fast, with bends and slides, no hesitations, in the dark and not even looking at his fingers/guitar neck - so he must have known everything by heart. He is always in sync with the drummer. In short he is not improvising.

@tomnjerry73 i honestly think that he just has the sound of the scales he wants to hit so dialed that he can improvise without actually improvising. does that make sense?
9:07 Mr Knopfler a semi tone too high, but that is live music for you! you accept the occasional cock up they all do it even the greats like Mark Knopfler. I bet very few in the audience would notice it.
I was working at the Perth Ent Centre when dire straits played there in '86 & saw all 8 concerts. In all but the second to last show they played Tunnel of love, but in that particular show they opted for Telegraph road. In the final concert they played both
This was one of my favorites. I was so disappointed when they did NOT play this live at Brisbane in 86, on the same tour as this clip, but in Brisy for reasons only known to them they didnt play any songs off their best album. Why Mark?
@JimdiGris1 - Although they did not play this in Brisy they likely played Telegraph Road instead, do you recall by any chance? I remember seeing many concerts in Melbourne in Feb '86 where they tended to interchange these tunes. I was surprised to see Industrial Disease live in the Sydney concert.
@kjek1 There's no such thing as the best guitarists in the world. There are many many extremely talented guitarists. At the end of the day, it's all a matter of personal preference.
i always come back to this song to learn just a few bits and pieces and always go away not havent learnt anything just being blown away by the epic 2nd part of the song
Why never played in Brazil, Dire Straits?

I know notes are the same but that night mark invented new combinations and showed us that he is human because of the miss.
Any TOL version with other guitar than the Sunburststrat or the Pensa?

9:07 Mr Knopfler a semi tone too high, but that is live music for you! you accept the occasional cock up they all do it even the greats like Mark Knopfler. I bet very few in the audience would notice it.

8:58 -> 9:02.. the best chord succession I have heard in a looong time.. This version of ToL is bloody EPIC. I luv it to bits..

I know- he is amazing- I love the Alchemy live version but that part stood out to me and his facial expression-priceless!

He always improvise at the end of this theme.
8.32 to the miss in 8.58 is all improvised.
toby968 1 year ago
@toby968 It is not improvisation it's the same notes only phrased differently.

Why Mark?
JimdiGris1 1 year ago
@JimdiGris1 - Although they did not play this in Brisy they likely played Telegraph Road instead, do you recall by any chance? I remember seeing many concerts in Melbourne in Feb '86 where they tended to interchange these tunes. I was surprised to see Industrial Disease live in the Sydney concert.

@kjek1 There's no such thing as the best guitarists in the world. There are many many extremely talented guitarists. At the end of the day, it's all a matter of personal preference.

That's true. And Comfortably Numb and Sultans of Swing (live) are the best guitar solos in the universe.
mtamas99 1 year ago 29
@mtamas99 i would say Comfortably Numb from Delicate Sound of Thunder and Telegraph Road. Sultans of Swing would be a close third.
