  • Why never played in Brazil, Dire Straits?

  • @ 01057351 What the fuck do you know about music, can even play the drums correctly, lol.

  • it lokks like they really enjoy playing this song!! excellent song

  • who needs plectrums?

  • Mark makes a mistake at 08:56, then laughs at the band:)

  • @srdjankovic this is not a mistake this is on of the most beautiful moments of the solo in this version!

  • Comment removed

  • there are 8 people who are idiot for disliking this!

  • Mark... i love you

  • best solo ever in rock history

  • 11 min.musica vera un viaggio con i dire straits grandissimi .... ipnotizzati da mark tutti dietro alla sua chitarra....fantastico una vera droga che ti sballa per 11 minuti infiniti grandiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

  • Best guitar solo ever

  • He's playing in my town with Bob Dylan, in this moment, and i had no fuckin' tickets D:

  • @Bladerknight25 He played Manchester, see my comment beIow

  • The guitar solo at the end, from 7.20. this particular performance. Is best piece of music ever recorded.

    My opinion.

  • Even among those composers and musicians who are widely regarded as the "great" or "greatest" in rock n' roll history, to me Mark will always be among the greatest of the great. One sign of a true master or genius at any craft - creative or otherwise - is how amazingly (seemingly) effortless he/she displays their talent. How can anybody who has ears that can hear and says they appreciate/love GREAT music not be stunned by this song and performance?? Wannabees stay away!!!

  • I remember watching this live. In Simulcast, wooo ;-)

Great, great show. Great song. Fantastic lyrics.

  • the best band ever ever ever thank you MARK KNOPFLER

  • the best band ever ever ever

  • What a song. What a band.

  • Greatest band ever knophler one of the great guitar players of all time :)

  • nice music ....best guitarist no doubt.....but not the best compositor....he 's french...name :saez nickname :damien....

playing piano ,guitar, and sing his own song and which song!!!!!!!!!whith 21 th century themes on everything, love polictics..etc....upon every artist i ' ve heard in my life....long life.....

  • Great tune

  • Cant mark just be re-born and be back in the age of 30? :(

  • This Man is A living God !!!!!!!

  • 11 minute performance and ur so sad at 10:30 that it won't go on forever.

  • Who can do better than Dire Straits ?... We won't see this again....

  • This is a song of such lyricism, beauty and joy! In some live recordings, bootlegs, he introduces it as "a song about being loco, a song about being young, a song about being in love" or " a song about playing in a band". Such deep feelings in such a beautiful melody. The final solo is nothing but exhilarating! Thanks for sharing!

  • does the sound get REALLY crappy at 6:32 for anyone else? amazing performance and epic band btw

  • There is no better Guitarist than Knopfler!

He has such soul and feeling in his music, not just playing a bunch of notes.

  • This song...it's sounds so pretty to me...like it always did.

  • sat in front of this solo on vhs for hrs learning the guitar... picking out the studio parts and various live add ins from alchemy etc and the improvisations...7.15-off key run, 7.25 background piano, 8.46 "that" run, 8.56 chord progression, 9.17 bend and MK's expression - and it all just bleeds nostalgia. wow

  • No one sounds like Knopfler. He is in a special class of musicians. He is able to evoke strong emotions in his playing!

  • I saw them on this tour (in Melbourne).

    Just magic!!

And this song is the highlight.

  • Still got chickenskin from these songs after 6 years listening to DS.

  • I think this is one of the greatest songs ever created. It has left a lasting impression in my life. I first heard it when I was only 7 and the ending solo still uplifts me. I have listened to alot of music over the years from mainstream pop to black metal and no song can compare to this :)

  • i experienced the Knopfler Effect: orgasm+eargasm+molten face

thumbs up if you did too :)

  • @tub3scr3am3r i dont know what molten face is but maybe... :)

  • muito fixe!

  • Is Mk an alien, no human can play a guitar like him

  • I want Mark's Strat.

  • DOGSWEDE1, you're the man!!! thank u dude!! ive been playing these songs for months and just cant stop!!!

  • Screw Lady Gaga and most of new music....this is, my young friends, is what Music sounds like!!

  • love the music!!!

  • Comment removed

  • I'm so in love with Mark's trousers :D

  • I love this song! I got into Dire Straits in late '85 when I borrowed Brothers In Arms on tape from a friend. 1986 will always be special to me because of the Straits and I love Tunnel of Love from Making Movies. It reminds me of my girlfriend back then when we were two young lovers! Aah the memories of those long lost days many years ago! 'The big wheel keep on turnin, neon burning up above. And I'm just high on this world, come on and take a low ride with me girl. On the Tunnel of Love!

  • What a band - pure brilliance!

  • QUE GRANDES COÑO!!!:D

  • From a certain moment on the audio get turned down, I think YouTube thought "Well, do I deserve to play this solo up?". Thus the audio became shy :)

  • 0:36 - 0:45 best intro ever !

  • a person must be considered schizophrenia if they said that kurt cobain is a better guitarist than knopfler..

  • @auptt Cannot compare really. They both did something unique did'nt they.

  • @22061973auke Yeah Mark made amazing music and Kurt blew his brains out.

  • @22061973auke Actually you can compare talent with a guitar, and Mark Knopfler is much better than Kurt Cobain. The thing that would hard to compare is Dire Straits and Nirvana.

  • @HIGGLEFORTTOPALIS Curt did a totally different thing with his guitar. He a had a new and raw approach to music. You could compare with car sports. Curt is best in rally, Mark does F1. They are both champions to my opinion.

  • @auptt yeah I blame it on the drugs fueled kids out there. GO MARK!!!!

  • @auptt i'd be amazed if anyone said that too. I love nirvana but Dire Straits are 100x more technical

  • @auptt hahaha.. I agree

  • @auptt He´s the best, no one could be better!

  • @auptt even jerry cantrell from ALICE IN CHAINS, who saw nirvana in the early days in seattle said his 1st impression of cobain was, WOW HES GOT GOOD SONGS BUT WHAT A SHITTY GUITARIST!!!! cobain was a good songwriter, no doubt, but mark knopfler is 1 of the all time great guitarists/ musicians/ songwriters!!! its not even a contest!!!! cobain was not a great musician!!! knopflers amazing!! LONG LIVE REAL MUSIC, LONG LIVE ROCK N ROLL!! PEACE!!!

  • @auptt no - just plain stupid

  • All though I really like Dire Starits, I also like Van Halen, but this song always seems to make me love Dire Starits more

  • @JTSpecial5150 the nice thing about music is; you don't have to take a pick. It's like food, you don't always have to eat the same food..

  • There's no words to describe his music. Listened to his song once, and fell instantly in love, 2 days later, got all albums and concerts for my ears :)

  • I'm in the Tunnel of LOVE. <3

I love him so bad :)

  • thank's god for this song !!!

  • Simply awesome. I don't care what anyone says. Knopfler is best.

  • one of the best versionsthat I have ever heared in my life.

Mark Knopfler is simply my idol.

by the way - 3:32-4:01 is the best part of this version!!

  • Comment removed

  • amazing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I've seen a few 'Top Guitarists' lists, and nearly all of them have Kurt Cobain as a better guitarist than the brilliant Mark Knopfler. I'd love to see Cobain make the guitar sing like this!

  • @LJChaz I'm Cobain's fan, but I must say you're right.

  • i masturbate to this song more than i do with porn

  • @tub3scr3am3r haha :)

  • @tub3scr3am3r My brother, that is the best compliment Ive ever heard for an artist, and nobody deserves it more than Mark Knofler!!! Keep on rocking!

  • what happened to the sound at halfway??? was great till then. awsome solo as usual!!

  • Does anyone have a high quality of this???? I still have this entire concert on VHS and its one of my most prized possessions but the picture quality and the sound isn't what it used to be. I'd kill for a better quality copy - I've even rung Channel 9 and the Australian publicists for Dire Straits at the time to see if they've got a copy but no luck....

  • @BaileyFS2010 I hear you, brother, for me, this music is the best drug on the planet!!!

  • @BaileyFS2010 I also have this on VHS as it was free to air and recorded it and have the same issue with sound and picture quality!! Would pay good money for this in HD.

  • Very Good!

  • Anyone remember what movie this song was in?

  • @bowie41

Officer and a Gentleman bar scene when Richard Gere tells Debra Winger to take a hike

  • I soo remember this gig. It was the biggest thing in Australia at the time. It even streamed live to our TV sets (which back then was almost unheard of). What memories!!!

P.S. This line up with John Illsley (bass),Terry Williams (Drums), Jack Sonni (Rythm Guitar), Guy Fletcher & Alan Clark (Keys) and Chris White (Sax/Flute) was the best ever.

How I wish they would reform and do a re-unnion tour. Please Mark K, come back to Australia!!

  • @afoustic with you ther brother!!

  • @afoustic You forgot to mention that this event was similcast with FM stereo radio as well. I went out and bought a brand new radio just for this occassion. Every bit worth it.

  • @afoustic Sad to say my friend it is unIikeIy. Mark tours on his own, I am going to see him in the Manchester Evening News Arena on Oct 10 with Bob DyIan. The remaining band members now tour as "The Straites" with a replacement for Mark. I wiII post again after concert to Iet you know if he stiII "has it". He is 62 now but I am reaIIy Iooking forward to it.

  • @stewartshedden As promised. Mark was brilliant but he under-carded to Bob DyIan who was awfuI. Mark has returned tro his foIk roots, so anyone expecting to just hear dire straits wouId be disappinted. However, his version of foIk isnot too far removed from his Dire music. OveraII, briIIiant, with a couple of dire songs in for good measure. Best advice is too wait untiI he tours aIone. I used to Iove DyIan and stiII do, but woud never watch him Iive again. Mark stiII has it!!

  • I think this is the best live version of this song. I used to listen it for days when someone first uploaded it, back in 2006.

  • @mustsilm Agreed. Many say that Alchemy's version of Tunnel of Love is best. The vocals i think was better but this here,... the solo at the end is the ultimate best for me. I still listen to this every day

  • beautiful

  • Just fantastic.

  • mark knopfler is fore teh win! and for all you douches crying about him being a homophobe, read the fkn lyrics. he's being satirical in "money for nothing." it's a parody of douches judging elton john. christ. y'all make me sad for humanity.

  • Download the album recording and then comment on the drummer ! It is how it is meant to sound !

  • Who the feck was the drummer? - way off the pace.

  • @jerryfalwellsociety he is terry williams. absolut awasome drummer!

  • fuck, good one.

  • the guitar solo is really awesome

  • 4 re-tards

  • the best guitar player livin'!! the sound is simply amazing and the voice so rock!

i try sometime to play little riff , and it is not easy...........thanks mark

  • I came at 9:45 of the guitar solo.

  • ottimo video .......complimenti

  • Jawdropping.

  • i need 4 bullets...

  • Knopfler rimani il miglior compositore, poeta e chitarrista di tutti i tempi

  • "You are the perfect stanger - she said baby let's keep it like this"

"In the Roarin' dust and diesel"

"She put her hand in my pocket - I got a keepsake and a kiss"

No one writes lyrics quite like Mark Knopfler. This may be one of his best Dire Straits songs.

  • @danieleshapiro I agree wiv it being the best song

  • @9missClaire Yeah! Great lyrics, the cool slow break toward the end with the soulful solo. Here's a story: It was 1979 and I ws living in Irvine, CA. Woke up and turned on the radio and was getting ready to go to work and I head something that really grabbed me - it was The Sultans of Swing. I thought it was Bob Dylan! The pure Fender Strat sound and the driving rhythmn was something I hadn't head in years. Been a Dire Strait/Mark Knopfler fan ever since. This song is my time reference of 1979!

  • Knopfler truly is the greatest. No other guitarist manage to put so much emotion into their solos.

  • Who are those 4 assholes who said "don't like"? This is that kind of music that recounciles you with the whole world when you feel anger...

  • @SkinnyPLer WAS AT THIS CONCERT, AMAZEING!!!! NEVER SEEN BETTER SINCE!!

  • @panzermick1 - Gee, I'm envious. I remember as a 17 y/o kid doing his HSC who'd only gotten into the Straits a few months earlier, how excited I was when Channel 9 and Triple M announced they were simulcasting this concert. The night it came, I locked my parents out of the loungeroom so I could tape it on VHS and at the same time, tape it off the radio. I was shattered several weeks later though when some a-hole broke into my car and stole the cassette tapes that I was listening to non-stop .

  • Knopfler is the best guitarist of the world!

  • The solo in this song is awesome! IMO Mark Knopfler is one of the most emotional guitarists ever.

  • mark = guitar MASTER!

  • una de las mejores versiones de tunnel of love en directo!!!!

  • Guitar Knopfler. was after Hero named Mark

  • This music is life

  • Love it !!!! Very slightly softer and slower than the studio version and just brilliant

  • Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa LOVE DIRE STRAITS!

  • Gosh, how is it that his fingers don't kill him by the end of a show? He's all that, and he doesn't use a pick... now that's something.

  • this is one of the most romantic songs ever written

    and the solos, OMG....

  • Fantastica.........!!!!!!!!!!!wonderful........

  • fantastic, just watch knoffo when the first chorus kicks in & he looks at terry to say ,yes were the greatest band in the world.dosent get ant better

  • all made the better with that fantastic guitar setup - it kind of honks - magic

  • Mark Knopfler is the best!

  • Breathtakingly beautiful !

  • Esses caras são verdadeiros artistas!!!

  • one of the best musicians i`ve ever heard

  • This is music man. Can't believe rappers and other like Jlo, britney or any mediawhores or whatever call them musicians. This is music by heart. MK makes it look so easy to play the guitar.

  • @nonekeer great shout

  • what a great song by a great band - Knopfler is one of the finest and classiest performers...

  • This video would be great if the sound level didn't suddenly change 6 minutes and 33 seconds in. It totally ruins the video

  • @tomnjerry73, his final solos are the best.

  • FANTASTIC!!!! MARK IS A GUITAR MONSTER!!!

    ELVIO FROM ARGENTINA

  • Mark knopfler an his mystical guitar. i watch this concert after Australia in New zealand in 1986, phew!

  • This is definitely some of the most beautiful guitar playing I've seen on here EVER.

  • OUTSTANDING!

  • @toby968: Mark is not improvising. His mates cannot read his mind to figure out what chords to play to maintain harmony. He is playing way to fast, with bends and slides, no hesitations, in the dark and not even looking at his fingers/guitar neck - so he must have known everything by heart. He is always in sync with the drummer. In short he is not improvising.

It's the best ToL I ever heard. Better, more mature, more rich in content than the Alchemy version (although that is wonderful too).

  • @tomnjerry73 i honestly think that he just has the sound of the scales he wants to hit so dialed that he can improvise without actually improvising. does that make sense?

  • that is music

  • 7.15 to 7.21 is the best phrase of this song.

  • 7.15 to 7.21 is the best phrase of this song.

  • I know notes are the same but that night mark invented new combinations and showed us that he is human because of the miss.

Any TOL version with other guitar than the Sunburststrat or the Pensa?

  • 9:07 Mr Knopfler a semi tone too high, but that is live music for you! you accept the occasional cock up they all do it even the greats like Mark Knopfler. I bet very few in the audience would notice it.

  • 8:58 -> 9:02.. the best chord succession I have heard in a looong time.. This version of ToL is bloody EPIC. I luv it to bits..

  • @MrKorbendalas

I know- he is amazing- I love the Alchemy live version but that part stood out to me and his facial expression-priceless!

  • Fantastic non c'e' paragoni

  • He always improvise at the end of this theme.

8.32 to the miss in 8.58 is all improvised.

  • @toby968 It is not improvisation it's the same notes only phrased differently.

  • Pity the sound quality changed at 6:33 otherwise good to see this again!!

  • Comment removed

  • I was working at the Perth Ent Centre when dire straits played there in '86 & saw all 8 concerts. In all but the second to last show they played Tunnel of love, but in that particular show they opted for Telegraph road. In the final concert they played both

  • so, there must be a recording of a live performance of telegraph road from the brothers in arms tour, i cant believe it!

  • Besser gaats nüme

  • Kjek1, that's what i'm talking about! David AND Mark are True Kings!

  • This was one of my favorites. I was so disappointed when they did NOT play this live at Brisbane in 86, on the same tour as this clip, but in Brisy for reasons only known to them they didnt play any songs off their best album. Why Mark?

  • @JimdiGris1 - Although they did not play this in Brisy they likely played Telegraph Road instead, do you recall by any chance? I remember seeing many concerts in Melbourne in Feb '86 where they tended to interchange these tunes. I was surprised to see Industrial Disease live in the Sydney concert.

  • he lets the guitar sing

  • insieme a brian may, il miglior chitarrista di sempre!

  • loving the back up vocals on this version

  • David Gilmour and Mark Knopfler

    best guitarists on the planet

  • i agree but would add jimmy page

  • @smokerdalejash add lindsey buckingham to that list too!

  • @Ruiggie ok if you want to play this game add santana to

  • @kjek1 There's no such thing as the best guitarists in the world. There are many many extremely talented guitarists. At the end of the day, it's all a matter of personal preference.

  • That's true. And Comfortably Numb and Sultans of Swing (live) are the best guitar solos in the universe.

  • @mtamas99 i would say Comfortably Numb from Delicate Sound of Thunder and Telegraph Road. Sultans of Swing would be a close third.

  • Best Guitarist in the World = MK

  • Extraordinary guitarists.... Long live MK

  • Go Mark, you're the best!!! Lovely song!!!

  • i always come back to this song to learn just a few bits and pieces and always go away not havent learnt anything just being blown away by the epic 2nd part of the song

  • just 1 bum note well hidden great tune seen them live awsome

  • Yes all the money from this went to charity Unt Molly Meldrum Acted like a DICK suring the pre interview !!!

  • many people feel music

    some of those play music

a select few feel what they play...Mark is one of those select few.
