  • @kiuhy8 A massive thumbs up.

  • such talented man and song writer. very good

  • this song remains me so much of my mom on Christmas time :(

  • Great song from my favourite album ever. Paul Buchanan gets so much credit for his contribution but for me it is the wondeful soundscapes that Paul Joseph Moore produces that really makes this album.

  • classic song from underxposed highly talented band.

probably best band in the world

  • A true friend introduced me and my cold heart to this song and the album Hats, soulful and a truely wonderful song and album, thank you BB. ML xx

  • I can remember the day I bought this cd, it was March 12th, 1989 in Austin TX.

  • love the Blue Nile but this song is uncomfortably similar to THE BURNING by Iron Curtain, which came out 2 years before

  • @asspennie no it doesn't, not even close....

  • Jesus !! how good is this ,, wow

  • @09sparton my reaction was the same wow and wow again x

  • Sometimes I drive to downtown in mid-night, just for listening to this song.

  • My Mum and Dad pretty much raised me with this kind of music and I love it (: Hopefully one day my kids can appreciate this amazing music too (:

  • Fabulous, and I just discovered this!

  • How many times do I have to listen to this song to get tire of it? More than two decades have past and it still as good as the first time

  • @GenMaul you and me both never get tired of the blue niles master pieces

  • Isn't it wonderful to here new comments from people who have never heard of TBN, buy their 4 albums and find out how good they are, we pray for a 5th!!! Some of us have been crying to their music for 20 years or more mate, but Paul is so laid back it's frightening, the greatest band I have ever saw.

  • ¡Jamás lograran superar a está canción las nuevas generaciones!

  • muy linda canción, la conocí gracias a rod stewart.......

  • Precioso tema con sentimiento y pasión ,va por uds...

  • Indeed, Blue Nile's Hats is the best driving albums ever. Nothing else takes away stress from my life :-)

  • @teknokat Totally Agree.

  • I'm a big Annie Lennox fan, and I love her version of this song, but I'll admit it--this is better.

  • Blue Nile were the Bomb!!!!

  • I would say that Pefab Sprout snd Cocteau Twins is in the same selected league.

  • How we miss The Blue Nile and hold on to everything they have produced in hope of one day being indulged by them with a fifth album.

Ever since being hooked by 'Stay' and grabbing the 12 inch vivnyl version way back in teenhood, no one has reached the heights they produce in music.

As a Scotsman from Glasgow, how proud I am to say I come from the same city as these guys!

  • @Solidstone100 Aye man our City has produced some under rated bands in its time.

  • I was lucky enough to see this tour back in the day... still one of my favorite songs from that era. Sounds as good now as it dis 20 years ago.... I have this album on vinyl.... hope I can find it on CD....

  • @adlabert I have it!

  • @adlabert Try Fopp music store in Byres Road, Glasgow....a great source for finding The Blue Nile on CD and a shop right in the heartland of the bands original residency.

  • great 80s

  • Glasgow memories in the mid nineties. Sublime track full of emotion and sadness. For a life I once lost mx

  • Glasgow memories in the mid nineties. Sublime track full of emotion and sadness. For a life I once lost mx

  • Glasgow memories in the mid nineties. Sublime track full of emotion and sadness. For a live I once lost mx

  • I got this album for my 14th birthday in 1989.It was one of the BEST birthday presents I ever gotten!! "Hats" is a MASTERPEACE!! I can listen to the whole album over and over again! This song is so good, for those long night drives...BRILLANT!!!

  • One of the most beautiful songs from one of the best albums ever made. This is probably my own favourite album - only "Tinseltown in the rain" from the first album can top this track for me. Sublime. Paul Buchanan's voice is just lovely.

  • Buggs me that this version is so short and cuts off the crescendo of the song, still good we're missing the best part here. PS Buy the CD Hats, you wont be dissapointed. The best ever.

  • Man the blue nile are a band from my youth had not heard them in years just listenened to this for the first time in years im in pieces just told my brother i love him he is still in shock beautiful and moving dont fully describe this gem, Paul Buchannan what a beautiful voice love@light

  • Walking through Glasgow streets in winter I played this so much on my old Walkman the tape eventually bust. A perfect, perfect song.

  • Bellisima...

  • Muy bella Canción,,,

  • fantastico tema el nilo azul es mi grupo favorito

  • Beautiful song from HATS, the best album ever. Period.

  • Una maravilla.

  • brillant

  • Quite simply my favourite band of all time and a wonderful song. It's a pity the song isn't played to it's fullness in the video as there is still a coupl of minutes more.

  • Wonderful music.

  • beautiful song

  • Just saw another video of the same song, and I have to say that this version is more meloncholy.

  • Sounds like norwegian Aha

  • I have kept this song close to my heart ever since I was in junior high.

  • if i have to go out of this world it would be in this way n

  • @frompixieland

totalmente de acuerdo contigo, tambien es tremenda tinselltown in the rain. Vivan los 80, coño!!!!. Un saludo cordial, y a ver si alguien se anima a taducirla

  • ❤❤❤ =)

  • it's like 430am where i am and i am jonesing for the blue nile music here. they sounds great late at night. i am agreeing with you guys. they sound great whenever, but have a special sound at night.

  • just awesome !

  • For all The Blue Nile fans, their unofficial page is on Facebook, just look for The Blue Nile!

  • terrible video and audio quaity

  • Cuddle up next to your loved one, to the beautiful voice of Paul Buchanan. x

  • heart-burstingly sad and uplifting at the same time - how does that work. Definitely one of my top five albums of all time. 21 years on, I still play at least once a month, or every time the melancholy strikes. fabulous.

  • Bryan Ferry vs Paul Buchanan. Discuss.

  • @comeon224 Both. If I was to stick my neck out , I would say Buchanan...having said that.. I saw Roxy in '74 at the old Glasgow Apollo, and it was one of the best gigs I've ever had the privilege to attend...so I'm afraid it's a dead heat for me...different generations.. two "knicker wetting" gentlemen... as far as the ladies were concerned... they make Tom Jones look like George Formby !

  • BAD

  • An old hippy turned me on to this album when we were having a smoke back in the early 90's.It blew me away and still does to this day even without the smoke!!

  • Still on my top playlist after all these years. I remember even NME being wowed by it when it came out.

  • A tender machete thru the heart...

  • Why nobody watch this video (and listen this great song) every night, before go to bed? I LOVE BLU NILE!

  • They'd get nowhere on Britain's Got Talent :oD

  • was all recorded in castlemilk in glasgow i no some of the lads i was brought up next to there house and used to see them all the town and my brother was very friendly with the guys COME ON GLESGA

  • Jesus... this is the first time I have ever heard this band, and I am about to break down and start crying. I don't even know what the song is about nor am I paying attention to the lyrics, but something about the combination of the dreamy music, and the heartbreaking vocals is just killing me inside.

  • @VernianProcess What a beautiful thing to say! I first heard this song 21 years ago and it still breaks my heart.......

  • Comment removed

  • @VernianProcess It's late at night .... i have the same feeling

  • @VernianProcess I know you posted four months ago, but I had to respond! A friend of mine turned me on to this band about 15 years ago! I love them! They have a very moody, in love quality. I'm glad you enjoy them as much as I do.

  • This album is pure bliss!

  • There are actually five people who didn't like this song. How can you not like this song?

  • I was just listening to Craig Armstrong's "let's go out tonight" and I was having the usual emo breakdown. I realized it reminded me of the Annie Lennox version of this song. I had never heard the original. And OMG - it's Paul B again. A master.

  • When I was living the eighties I hated people who used to say that the past was a better time. Now I find myself into the same situation, I mean, what the hell happens on today's music I can't find nothing like this.

    Smart music for smart people.

  • @daselektroklang Right on brother. Right on.

  • @daselektroklang en todas partes pasa lo mismo...!!! all over the world feel the same .... the last years were better ...

  • @daselektroklang There is still good music like this today, it's just even less exposed then at the time because of commercial radio stations and other reasons. :)

  • this song is so beautiful....

  • Despues de tanto buscar por ahi..por fin encontre esta hermosa cancion, solo para "orejas", en todo caso....One Top One de esta agrupacion nacida en Glasgow Escocia.

  • So Good

  • very good

  • I was brought on this album What a great band ;) much love

  • Just too good.......

  • I have not heard this song before, but it brings memories of something. I can't quite place where these memories come from, but they are very powerful.

  • Wat a crap video though. Why are they playing the wrong instruments awkwardly - it's not big and it's not clever boys...

  • I would love to hear this song with about 3 mellotrons doing all the keyboard parts. :-)

  • This would be THE slow set dance record to play at the end of a great night a the local disco...a pity the kids today don't know what a slow set is.....Ideally a lovely girl with a nice smile, not stoned/drunk who loves to dance nice and slow....get the idea now as to what a slow set was....

  • @mikeat48 still felling that kind of nostalgy of the beginning of 90's

  • beautifull

  • ecxelente cancion me encanta. me recuerda un poco a la voz de el vocalista de a-ha morten harket o no?

  • One of the greatest. Evar.

  • ¡Awsome song! ¡Namely for a Saturday early, at the dawn! :)

  • Bellissima Musica! ;-)

  • Bellissima Musica! Grazie ;-)

  • Sinatra meets Billy Connelly!... The tales of modern life....Perfect

  • Amazing

  • @EatTheTele Paul Buchanan's vocal is as achingly beautiful as it gets. Magnificent.

  • a brilliant song by one of the most brilliant bands ever !!

  • Kim Clarke-Champniss played this on City Limits in Toronto one Sunday afternoon in spring 1990, prefacing the clip with "if you like Talk Talk, you should like The Blue Nile." I assume he meant Colour Of Spring/Spirit Of Eden-era Talk Talk, because the records I bought were far less accessible than I'd anticipated. Rather than some club-ready Duran Duran-like floor-fillers, this was exquisitely emotive, late-night stuff. Teenaged me had found his Sinatra for those dark nights of the soul.

  • Best band in the world! love Blue nile!

  • excellent track

  • OmiGOD

  • WOW

  • HATS off to The Blue Nile. Please, please, please can we have 1989 back?

  • @TheMokohya I am sincerely thankful for my wife, my son and that I lived and enjoyed the 80's

  • timeless and beautiful music

  • Comment removed

  • Hats is easily one of the greatest, if not the greatest, driving at night albums

  • A great song, a great band...

  • "Hats" is by far one of the best albums of the 80s - its mesmeric.

  • Still sounds great, the whole album is great.Such a shame they get so little credit.

  • *-* i loved, thanks! *-*

  • Sweet track. I love bluenile. They kick ass and are so chilled out. That voice is like none other. Top notch

  • It does not get any better that this, the whole album 'Hats' is a masterpiece, highly under rated. try listening to this late at night, in the peace and quiet without getting a lump in your throat? Musical genius

  • even Rod Stewart's version is great but this one is awesome!!! :)

  • I actually heard a version of this song that was done by a children's choir, and it wasn't half bad at all. Annie Lennox's version is also great, but of course, nothing can top this. Ths song is about as close to musical perfection as one can get. The lyrics, the imagery, the melody, everything is just so smooth and amazing.

  • This number, one of the best, it looks so simple, but it's pure art, believe me....BTW, Where are these guys?? it seems they are disapeared ...

  • @robheerema, they're still around. Listen to this still unreleased song 'Meanwhile' from 2006: watch?v=OW1Rl0pEvGc

  • Great thank you!

  • Wonderful, great song also covered by Annie Lennox in her Medusa album...the original is as intense as the cover...the Blue Nile are a great band and songwriter too...love them

  • Al fin encontre esta melodia!!!!!!

    Gracias por Subirla.

    Gracias.

  • Saw these guys at UCLA back in 85 (I think) what a fucking night, what a voice, what a band. Makes me homesick for my home away from home. Don't have any of there albums anymore ,sadly. Got left behind in the move, so thankyou for the posts, and please, keep them coming. Right up there with Talk Talk, Japan. Good music gets better with timenever ages . Thanks again.

  • Un altro piccolo gioiello nascosto della musica.

  • ace..

  • I've loved The Blue Nile since GO! I lstenened to Tinseltown a million times and the joy from the emotion continued thru today. Brilliant music!!

  • If you guys cant see this is is some of the best music you ever heard ...its ok go listen to something else .Hats album is 1 of my top 10 ever ..

  • lol you gotta love it

  • One of the most under-rated acts of the past 20 years.

    Utterly brilliant.

  • prolly over shadowed by emo bands like the cure. I'm 23, found out about this band on Top Gear. I started downloading the music off the show and this was one of the tracks.

  • totally agree his voice is amazing and the music beautiful the hats album is a masterpiece check out the collaboration with craig armstrong

  • Timeless!

  • @ahfaxthis Annie Lennox covered this song on her Medusa album i'm not sure what year was it

  • makes me close my eyes and forget about everything...so beautiful

  • The German word for art is Kunst, very similar to the word können, which means to can. In Dutch its kunst, similar to kunnen, this also means to can. Paul Buchanan and The Blue Nile they really can!

  • (no one, no Boone...)

  • Simply amazing band. Boone conjoirs up images of desperate love like these guys. !

  • Nobody loves you this way.

  • Hats is pure genius.

  • o my god i love this song and the video is amazing it gives you a feeling of abaration i love it

  • @ahfaxthis, Rod Stewart covered this song on his 1995 album Spanner in the Works and turned it into a really bland light FM/adult contemporary snoozefest. I'm NOT talking about Tom Waits' Downtown Train.

  • Why can't it be 1989 again?

  • ... :)

  • Are you peeps that stupid? Rod S. and this song are not even in anyway the same. WTF? STop your stupid comments about which one is better, they are both different SONGS DUMBASSES !!!!!! GET A GRIP or just learn to google stuff !!! WOW. So sad for some of you.

  • sweet sadness at it's best.

  • The album was very good, always liked this one and Saturday night.

  • Beautiful song, very moving....I used to have this record. So many memories.... Thanks for posting.

  • OMG, Rod Stewart actually did massacre this song... :-(

  • Please, listen 1995 "Spanner In The Works" Rod Stewart album ;-)

  • Rod Stewart's song is called "dowtown train"

this is "Downtown lights". SO i don't think that applies.

I love this this song, thanks for posting!

  • Comment removed

  • An incredible song . . . with it melancholic touch . . . but it needs the ending!!! where can i find it complete: The neon's and the cigarettes

    Rented rooms and rented cars

The crowded streets, the empty bars

    Chimney tops and trumpets

The golden lights, the loving prayers

The coloured shoes, the empty trains

I'm tired of crying on the stairs

    The downtown lights

  • Anybody heard Rab Noakes's version of this beautiful song....Its on Rab's CD "standing up"

  • ace. i was working door security in the liverpool philharmonic around 2 and a half years ago. never heard of buchannan or blue nile until "that night". jesus christ. there could of been a riot happening behind me and i would'nt of cared. i was totally mesmorised. now i own 3 albums and cant wait to see them again. cheers lads.

  • If it weren't for Annie Lennox, I might have never discovered Blue Nile.....I can't even grasp the concept of missing out on such wonderful music..addicting sounds. It was my favourite song from the Medusa album and - knowing it was an all cover album - I was desperate to find out who had written such a magnificent piece of music...thank god I found out :) And yes, as much as I love Annie, the original is tenfold better !

  • tjhe 80's were a bit of the 4th dimension

  • Go and see them live ;a great concert .The lead singer is a very laid back, down to earth guy..no pretensions, enjoys giving his very best(and a great band too) .Thanks for a great concert in Galway in 2008.

  • PERFECT

  • Maybe one of the greatest vocal performances captured on tape. Sublime.

  • Absolutly..
