Great song from my favourite album ever. Paul Buchanan gets so much credit for his contribution but for me it is the wondeful soundscapes that Paul Joseph Moore produces that really makes this album.
Isn't it wonderful to here new comments from people who have never heard of TBN, buy their 4 albums and find out how good they are, we pray for a 5th!!! Some of us have been crying to their music for 20 years or more mate, but Paul is so laid back it's frightening, the greatest band I have ever saw.
I was lucky enough to see this tour back in the day... still one of my favorite songs from that era. Sounds as good now as it dis 20 years ago.... I have this album on vinyl.... hope I can find it on CD....
@adlabert Try Fopp music store in Byres Road, Glasgow....a great source for finding The Blue Nile on CD and a shop right in the heartland of the bands original residency.
I got this album for my 14th birthday in 1989.It was one of the BEST birthday presents I ever gotten!! "Hats" is a MASTERPEACE!! I can listen to the whole album over and over again! This song is so good, for those long night drives...BRILLANT!!!
One of the most beautiful songs from one of the best albums ever made. This is probably my own favourite album - only "Tinseltown in the rain" from the first album can top this track for me. Sublime. Paul Buchanan's voice is just lovely.
Buggs me that this version is so short and cuts off the crescendo of the song, still good we're missing the best part here. PS Buy the CD Hats, you wont be dissapointed. The best ever.
Man the blue nile are a band from my youth had not heard them in years just listenened to this for the first time in years im in pieces just told my brother i love him he is still in shock beautiful and moving dont fully describe this gem, Paul Buchannan what a beautiful voice love@light
Quite simply my favourite band of all time and a wonderful song. It's a pity the song isn't played to it's fullness in the video as there is still a coupl of minutes more.
totalmente de acuerdo contigo, tambien es tremenda tinselltown in the rain. Vivan los 80, coño!!!!. Un saludo cordial, y a ver si alguien se anima a taducirla
it's like 430am where i am and i am jonesing for the blue nile music here. they sounds great late at night. i am agreeing with you guys. they sound great whenever, but have a special sound at night.
heart-burstingly sad and uplifting at the same time - how does that work. Definitely one of my top five albums of all time. 21 years on, I still play at least once a month, or every time the melancholy strikes. fabulous.
@comeon224 Both. If I was to stick my neck out , I would say Buchanan...having said that.. I saw Roxy in '74 at the old Glasgow Apollo, and it was one of the best gigs I've ever had the privilege to attend...so I'm afraid it's a dead heat for me...different generations.. two "knicker wetting" gentlemen... as far as the ladies were concerned... they make Tom Jones look like George Formby !
An old hippy turned me on to this album when we were having a smoke back in the early 90's.It blew me away and still does to this day even without the smoke!!
was all recorded in castlemilk in glasgow i no some of the lads i was brought up next to there house and used to see them all the town and my brother was very friendly with the guys COME ON GLESGA
Jesus... this is the first time I have ever heard this band, and I am about to break down and start crying. I don't even know what the song is about nor am I paying attention to the lyrics, but something about the combination of the dreamy music, and the heartbreaking vocals is just killing me inside.
@VernianProcess I know you posted four months ago, but I had to respond! A friend of mine turned me on to this band about 15 years ago! I love them! They have a very moody, in love quality. I'm glad you enjoy them as much as I do.
I was just listening to Craig Armstrong's "let's go out tonight" and I was having the usual emo breakdown. I realized it reminded me of the Annie Lennox version of this song. I had never heard the original. And OMG - it's Paul B again. A master.
When I was living the eighties I hated people who used to say that the past was a better time. Now I find myself into the same situation, I mean, what the hell happens on today's music I can't find nothing like this.
@daselektroklang There is still good music like this today, it's just even less exposed then at the time because of commercial radio stations and other reasons. :)
Despues de tanto buscar por ahi..por fin encontre esta hermosa cancion, solo para "orejas", en todo caso....One Top One de esta agrupacion nacida en Glasgow Escocia.
I have not heard this song before, but it brings memories of something. I can't quite place where these memories come from, but they are very powerful.
This would be THE slow set dance record to play at the end of a great night a the local disco...a pity the kids today don't know what a slow set is.....Ideally a lovely girl with a nice smile, not stoned/drunk who loves to dance nice and slow....get the idea now as to what a slow set was....
Kim Clarke-Champniss played this on City Limits in Toronto one Sunday afternoon in spring 1990, prefacing the clip with "if you like Talk Talk, you should like The Blue Nile." I assume he meant Colour Of Spring/Spirit Of Eden-era Talk Talk, because the records I bought were far less accessible than I'd anticipated. Rather than some club-ready Duran Duran-like floor-fillers, this was exquisitely emotive, late-night stuff. Teenaged me had found his Sinatra for those dark nights of the soul.
It does not get any better that this, the whole album 'Hats' is a masterpiece, highly under rated. try listening to this late at night, in the peace and quiet without getting a lump in your throat? Musical genius
I actually heard a version of this song that was done by a children's choir, and it wasn't half bad at all. Annie Lennox's version is also great, but of course, nothing can top this. Ths song is about as close to musical perfection as one can get. The lyrics, the imagery, the melody, everything is just so smooth and amazing.
Wonderful, great song also covered by Annie Lennox in her Medusa album...the original is as intense as the cover...the Blue Nile are a great band and songwriter too...love them

The German word for art is Kunst, very similar to the word können, which means to can. In Dutch its kunst, similar to kunnen, this also means to can. Paul Buchanan and The Blue Nile they really can!
@ahfaxthis, Rod Stewart covered this song on his 1995 album Spanner in the Works and turned it into a really bland light FM/adult contemporary snoozefest. I'm NOT talking about Tom Waits' Downtown Train.
Are you peeps that stupid? Rod S. and this song are not even in anyway the same. WTF? STop your stupid comments about which one is better, they are both different SONGS DUMBASSES !!!!!! GET A GRIP or just learn to google stuff !!! WOW. So sad for some of you.
ace. i was working door security in the liverpool philharmonic around 2 and a half years ago. never heard of buchannan or blue nile until "that night". jesus christ. there could of been a riot happening behind me and i would'nt of cared. i was totally mesmorised. now i own 3 albums and cant wait to see them again. cheers lads.
If it weren't for Annie Lennox, I might have never discovered Blue Nile.....I can't even grasp the concept of missing out on such wonderful music..addicting sounds. It was my favourite song from the Medusa album and - knowing it was an all cover album - I was desperate to find out who had written such a magnificent piece of music...thank god I found out :) And yes, as much as I love Annie, the original is tenfold better !
Go and see them live ;a great concert .The lead singer is a very laid back, down to earth guy..no pretensions, enjoys giving his very best(and a great band too) .Thanks for a great concert in Galway in 2008.

How we miss The Blue Nile and hold on to everything they have produced in hope of one day being indulged by them with a fifth album.
Ever since being hooked by 'Stay' and grabbing the 12 inch vivnyl version way back in teenhood, no one has reached the heights they produce in music.

Rod Stewart's song is called "dowtown train"
this is "Downtown lights". SO i don't think that applies.
I love this this song, thanks for posting!

An incredible song . . . with it melancholic touch . . . but it needs the ending!!! where can i find it complete: The neon's and the cigarettes
Rented rooms and rented cars
The crowded streets, the empty bars
Chimney tops and trumpets
The golden lights, the loving prayers
The coloured shoes, the empty trains
I'm tired of crying on the stairs
The downtown lights
