Andy has a voice for radio. He should seriously have his own show somewhere. I could name a thousand nationally syndicated D.J.s that could be canned, in order to make room for Andy. While we're at it, someone needs to give this man a weekly TV show giving lessons, jamming with bands, and talking about music. Andy's Corner, sponsored by PGS on Audience Network (Directv)? No reason his skills/voice should be limited to reviews.
My hats off to PGS for landing the gem known simply as "Andy".
Hi PGS crew, I tested out the Yamaha HS50M & the HS80M Monitors at a Guitar Center today. The HS50's sounded great, until I listened to the HS80's. LOL So much more added Bass it wasn't even funny. No comparison. The 50's had to be maxed out due to a loud keyboard player in the store. When I turned the 80's on I put them on 10 in the back of the Monitor but only 10:00 on the interface the GC employee had there. That's what I like, plenty of extra power to call upon if needed. I'm going HS80M's
On the shot of Jamie it shows what appear to be Yamaha Monitors, am I correct? I was debating between the Yamaha HS80M or the HS50M Monitors for a nice little starter home studio. Will the 50's put out enough Bass or will I have to get a sub-woofer also? Rock, Blues, Metal9 No Rap)
@hawg427 - You are correct. We like the HS50M's a lot. They're not nearly as fatiguing as the old NS10M's they replaced in the Yamaha lineup. They are a little bass-shy due to their compactness, so you might want a sub with them if you're mixing anything with a lot of low frequency information. Thanks for watching!
wowsers that's a lot more work than i thought goes into making one of these videos. great job, guys! i love watching your stuff and listening to your tunes. i hope to some day make it out to oregon and see your shop in person
This is such an excellent example of how a simple set up, albeit with quality gear, and a lot of talent goes a long way. Thanks for all your great demos. Andy's style has prompted me to start using my fingers more for picking, and this video will hopefully convince my band what I have been saying about a good ribbon mic. Thanks!
Absolutely fantastic video. I've always been very curious as to how you guys do your demos for years now. :D Thanks guys, for having been a great help to all of us gearheads on the net!
I wonder if you've ever considered doing bass demos? Just a thought. Would be cool though. You might have to get in someone to play (bit like you do with Scotty to come do some shredding) but that's should be fine. Be awesome if you could. Who's with me?
Great video! This goes through every question I had about the recording process you guys go through while answering all my gear questions :-) The only thing I don't like is the royer, not because of the quality obviously but because its $1300! =/

Thank you Crew... let me ask you a couple more things. So you are not one of those people that keeps recording a guitar with an SM57, right? Because in each recording studio i go i find people that keeps putting an SM57 or a Beta57 in front of the speaker! :( And another thing... the ambient microphone you use in the small cabinet... do you place it the way i saw in the video? Kinda like the place of the head/ears of the guitar player when he plays?
@ProGuitarShopDemos on the fat head ii would you recommend paying for the upgrade from the stock transformer ($220) to the Lundahl or Cinemag ($350)? If so is there much difference between the two upgrades? thanks
@StevesGuitars - We dig on the Lundahl transformer upgrade a lot...it extends and tightens the low-end response considerably, bringing it very close in performance to the Royer. Thanks!
A question for Andy: Did you ever think that you would garner such a fan base from working at PGS? You guys really do set the bar for what others should strive to be as far as making gear demos. And you really have progressed over the years, making the best even better. The improved quality from the 65amps SoHo days to current is testament to that. I'm thinking Jamie's expertise had something to do with that.... Also, where's Scotty? Haven't seen him shredding it up in a while.
@fucksalottasluts - Honestly, we had very modest goals when we began doing demo vids. We were as surprised as anyone that it has taken off the way it has, making Andy into an internet celebrity and all. We just try to focus on keeping things entertaining, and improving the quality of our videos whenever possible. Andy and Jamie thank you for your interest and kind words, and you'll see Scotty melting faces soon. Fear not.
You really film the demo's in the Black Lodge from Twin Peaks, I'd recognise those curtains anywhere. There's obviously some kind of supernatural influence at play, how else can Andy play all those songs and with no pick ? Is it Andy, or is it really Bob???
Hey Andy, I was always wondering: was the intro that has the click and feedback done on purpose? Or was it like, an accident that sounded cool enough to become the new intro?
Another Film-degree-holding guitar junkie here; just wondering why you opted for Vegas. I haven't used Vegas in a long time, and I do remember generally liking, but it's certainly no Avid:) And I haven't used Apple's editors (other than iMovie which was incredibly frustrating and shouldn't even count), but obviously a lot of people swear by those too.
You guys put the "PRO" in Pro Guitar Shop. These vids are a true gift to all us guitar geeks stuck behind desks in offices all day. Can't wait to see how these demos continue to expand and improve.
The Royer ribbon mics are AMAZING for anything but, especially for guitar (acoustic and electric). We have a 122 at the studio which is just a 48v version of the 121; a little louder and brighter. Where'd you guys get your degrees?
you guys are just incredible... can pgs get any better? every time I think you guys reached the peak you come up with something else that blows my mind!
I love you guys at proguitarshop. I'm sure all of us subscribers are pedal and guitar nerds here, but we're also engineering nerds as well and this video is SO AWESOME. I love hearing about different mic preferences, amps and editing. The Scoop and all your demos are the best videos on youtube.
I wouldn't say the ambient mic provides a stereo spread... you would need two mics in the same distance, and you would have to take care of phasing issues as well. It's there to add a bit of "air" and ambience, but stereo... not really... common and very useful technique, though. My favourite as well.
@bloodySunday77 - It's a sort of pseudo-stereo technique, rather than a strict XY coincident pair, which wouldn't be very useful on a mono guitar amp anyway. But just as with any stereo technique the phase differences between the mics are what creates the depth and imaging. We also pan the separate signals across the stereo field, and as you can see in the video the final product from our master buss is stereo. So yeah...we feel good about calling that stereo. Thanks!
@ProGuitarShopDemos Yes, it sounds great. I had commented on this slight ambience boost in one of your previous videos - I had noticed it was a bit of a new addition, and it works very very nicely! Keep up the good work! And please give us some MySpace links of Andy etc... these people have so much talent it's a sin not to create music with it.
PS - FWIW... I almost always check out the vids on YouTube (not your website) and seldom with earbuds or good speakers. Your demo videos sound very good even on my crappy THinkPad 1" speakers. Not Audiophile or anything like that of course - but they do the job in representing the gear you're using. So I think the YouTube version is successful.
Andy - this was great. I had no idea so much went into these demos - but they must be getting the results you guys are after (i.e.eventually.. sales) or top brass wouldn't dedicate two people and ton of high quality gear to the effort. Of course (and I'm not butt-kissing here ) your interpretation of how all the gear you sell can be used in the real world is what sells it. Nobody else comes close IMO. Not very many pickers know "every song ever recorded" ;-)
Hi Andy, nice explanation about the recording process at PGS. I wonder if you ever tried the 12AXY mic preamp from EHX to make a guitar recording, please let me know your opinion !!! Rock On !!!
May I ask what codecs/filetype(audio and video), size (in pixels), and bitrate you use for the final output file from Vegas before uploading to YouTube? YouTube's transcoding scheme is kind of a black box, your videos look/sound good, so I think you've hit a good balance of filesize/quality that seems to make it though their gauntlet successfully. Thanks.
@cnsengineer - We like to upload the highest quality that is practical for us, considering our tight schedule and youtube's inherent limitations . We've done a lot of experimenting in the past in an effort to achieve that balance. Lately we've been uploading a 864x486 AVI file with uncompressed audio at 48k / 16-bit. It seems to work well at the moment. Thanks for your interest!
Sweetness. Thanks for giving us the down-low on your recording process! I like the fact that you don't over-process your audio like some people do... (cough). ANYWAY, another awesome "The Scoop", keep 'em coming!
Ditch the PC and get a Mac and you'll be a million times more epic. What was up with that Dean V? I can't imagine the songs Andy would play with that guitar.
Hey, proguitarshop thanks for hearing out my request! I love that you guys actually listen to what us viewers/customers have to say it's frigin sweet man! this video has answered all my long pondered questions can't wait till next scoop thanks again!!
Andy and Jamie make an awesome team . Thanks for the behind the scenes look, you guys work hard and it shows, props ! .Amazing, That pink Dean survived the 80s. lol
Iv been watching PGS demos religiously for about a year n a half now and they without a doubt made me a better and smarter guitarist/musician. Thank you PGS!!!!!!
@Claytons91 Correct me if I'm wrong but Youtube audio won't go above 128kbps no matter what the format. Like me mention in the video, the audio on our site is always the highest.
@ProGuitarShopDemos AFAIK you're right. The audio track is exactly the same for everything from 480p to 1080p. Though, it would be nice to see HD images of the pedals we're GASsing for! ;)
@ProGuitarShopDemos I didn't mean it like that, I men't the actually quality of the video audio. HD allows for higher bit-rate and samples in the audio. Don't give me wrong, it sounds great.
@Claytons91 Uh, did you watch the video? You might be correct if you were just sticking a camcorder at the amp and using the built-in mic.. but what they're doing is far beyond that. The camera they use in this case has absolutely nothing to do with the final audio quality on YouTube.
It is amazing to see how much effort and dedication you guys put into making your demos, from a dedicated studio, to the equipments used, to Adndy and his assistant's talent!!! Congratulations ProGuitar Shop!!! Please keep the demos coming!!!
Being a recording engineer I loved this video. I had spotted the Royer 121 in the past, but was curious about the pre, a/d, and software used. Very insightful. Note to those interested in a Royer 121... They have many different flavors of the 121. You guys seem to have the standard 121, however they also have an unusual phantom powered one (ribbons as a general rule should NEVER have phantom power applied to them). They also have a live version. Oh and the UA Audio 610 is AWESOME.
@speakercoilmusic - The R122 is the active, phantom-powered Royer ribbon, which features higher output and sensitivity for recording quieter acoustic sources. And one of the handy features of the R121 is that it is NOT harmed by phantom power....brilliant stuff.
@speakercoilmusic Oh Awesome! I have used the standard in a bunch in studios and always loved in on amps. Though that's about all I have ever really liked it on. I haven't gotten to use the active yet. For everything else ribbon I like the AEA R84. I am about to attempt to build my own ribbon mic soon! I love building gear, and in my recent videos have been using a tube mic I built a few months ago. Yeah it's nice not having to worry about destroying your ribbon with phantom power.
I'm with you there. Guitarworld seems to think of what would irritate people the most, then goes and does it, lol. I've seen demos (can't remember which one) where they've had terrible sound and recording issues, even getting hum and feedback from the amp that wasn't intended. Seemed they didn't bother to do anything about it. Yeah, PGS all the way.
I'm not gay but damn for his guitar playing and tuition alone he is sex. What you don't see in the videos is the slue of groupies waiting for him. He is knee deep in poontang! some of the best explained and informative videos on youtube.
what guitar is that in end of the video?very nice! =)

Thanks.
cnsengineer 1 year ago

You guys should invest in a HD camera. When you upload in HD the sound quality is WAY better.
Claytons91 1 year ago
@Claytons91 Correct me if I'm wrong but Youtube audio won't go above 128kbps no matter what the format. Like me mention in the video, the audio on our site is always the highest.
ProGuitarShopDemos 1 year ago
@ProGuitarShopDemos AFAIK you're right. The audio track is exactly the same for everything from 480p to 1080p. Though, it would be nice to see HD images of the pedals we're GASsing for! ;)
virgult 1 year ago
@ProGuitarShopDemos I didn't mean it like that, I men't the actually quality of the video audio. HD allows for higher bit-rate and samples in the audio. Don't give me wrong, it sounds great.
Claytons91 1 year ago
@Claytons91 Uh, did you watch the video? You might be correct if you were just sticking a camcorder at the amp and using the built-in mic.. but what they're doing is far beyond that. The camera they use in this case has absolutely nothing to do with the final audio quality on YouTube.

Oh and the UA Audio 610 is AWESOME.
speakercoilmusic 1 year ago
@speakercoilmusic - The R122 is the active, phantom-powered Royer ribbon, which features higher output and sensitivity for recording quieter acoustic sources. And one of the handy features of the R121 is that it is NOT harmed by phantom power....brilliant stuff.
-PGS Crew
ProGuitarShopDemos 1 year ago
@speakercoilmusic Oh Awesome! I have used the standard in a bunch in studios and always loved in on amps. Though that's about all I have ever really liked it on. I haven't gotten to use the active yet. For everything else ribbon I like the AEA R84. I am about to attempt to build my own ribbon mic soon! I love building gear, and in my recent videos have been using a tube mic I built a few months ago. Yeah it's nice not having to worry about destroying your ribbon with phantom power.

suihkubad 1 year ago 2
@suihkubad
