@xxaprunexx every drum kit can sound great, If you know how to work with it.
I have now a Noble & Cooley kit, but my first one was a Tama Rockstar that is very cheap, I made to it some customs and that kit sound great, live and recording.
get Die-Cast hoops, Aquarian or Remo Heads, customize the bearing edges, make proportional hoops in each tom, etc.... up to you.
