If I recall correctly, there are a few scenes in the film, where you can only see the back of Hicks, in which its James Remar, not Michael Biehn acting.
The documentaries on these films are great because they actually discuss the sometimes insurmountable creative tensions behind each production. Such a refreshing change from the "oh, he was great, this was great, that was great" puff-pieces that usually pass for "Making of's".
Get some gloves! Haha I love Jim Cameron but he has his faults too and I can understand he can be dislikable in a tense environment whereas Ridley would be calmer and still get great results.
@diuga1 Depends on who you ask. Some reports say he & Cameron just didn't see eye to eye about the Hicks character, others just say that Remar left for personal reasons unrelated to the film. Either way I have a hard time picturing mean, villian-faced Remar (instead of baby-face Biehn) in the sympathetic role of Hicks...
Can't remember his name but the guy who played Richard on Sex and the City was the first Hicks, and I just KNOW he kicks himself everytime he hears the word "alien".
2:52- yeah, it is SUCH a drag when people tell you the truth in the better interests of the project instead of just mouthing bullshit their bosses want to hear.
wonder who the original 'actor's name was, that got let go, and that Beihn Replaced? notice in this vid, no mention of any 'names'. how courteous of them.....lol! still, be good trivia to know who it was. famous guy? english? American? no one worthy of mention? hmmm...........
The hard work of all the people involved, really showed with the outcome! The best of all "Alien" sequel movies and one of the best alien generated movies of all time...the 'glue' of all this, due to his persistence for excellence, was of course the Director James Cameron.
@mrptysonboy A director just has to know what he wants the movie to look like. I don't think it's a bad thing that he's known as a "hardass" director. He knows what he wants and he'll get it!
Agreed. I've never worked a job where I was able to 'override' what was wanted by the manager/owner. I highly doubt the director was controlling the actors every move, containing a vision and attempting to maintain it is fine imo, but in retrospect any director must also be prepared to at least minuetely adjust things according to how the actors naturally behave in various scenes, and I'm sure he did that. Being demanding is fine imo, and look how it turned out..
Loved Michael Biehn in the Terminator and here. He's intense. Why hasn't he been in more A-movies in A-roles? Shame on many big directors not thinking of him.
He was considered for the role of Miles Quaritch in Avatar, but since Sigourney Weaver had already been cast, James Cameron avoided casting as he didn't want to recreate the cast of Aliens. Stephen Lang got the part instead. Ironically, Stephen Lang had auditioned for the role of Dwayne Hicks in Aliens, but lost it to Michael Biehn. And you never know, we may see Michael show up in the next Avatar movie.
Every time I watch this and the way Michael Biehn says, "this is fucking bullshit...bring me something that fucking looks right" I just laugh my ass off!! That is great stuff! And I thought the same thing about Ron Jeremy, I was like..."WTF??!!"
(Alien1979) Ridley Scott + John Hurt + and a score by Jerry Goldsmith performed by the National Philharmonic Orchestra = the most horrific film made. The best film made. I still have Nightmares about being on the Nostromo. You can not copy this movie or chop it up (but they try). It's art. I'm a fan of the age where real movies were made. (the 26 thumbs down belong to Shia LaBeouf fans...may you live forever) P.S. you still have to see James Cameron's Aliens AND John Carpenter's the Thing.
What's cool about Michael Biehn is that he has this all-american look and voice. And this really shines when he plays a soldier. He looks like everybody's military relative, that so it becomes so believable.
whoa! I just read that too about james remar being replace due to creative differences with jim cameron. Sucks for ajax. I guess Swan was right about him, he never was that smart!
@SigmaXVirus Fuck a Duck! I've just wiki'd him and its 'Ajax' from 'The Warriors' Ha awesome. He would have made a good hicks but Im glad Beihn ended up with the part anyway.
i will buy some rights do wut fans want and bring everyone even if they are in a fucking wheelchair and that won`t be a problem just strap some fuckin pulserifles to it and rock` n roll
James Remar was the actor that Biehn replaced...Remar didn't see eye to eye with Cameron over his character (for whatever reason)...it definitely worked out though as Biehn is as fine a character actor as there was in the 80's and 90's (especially in the sci-fi/action stuff) both "Hicks" and "Reese" are the characters most people know him for.
No one will remember Avatar the same way we do Aliens. Cameron was great as a director in his youth, but now he couldn't direct himself out of the Toilet.
haha riiiight? yes the 'story' has been done many times in different ways but only Cameron in my opinion could have pulled off this technology to such amazing effect? i used to HATE CGI in films... but Avatar is something else?!
@blade004 >>>>I thought Avatar was good but lacked the characters that Aliens had. This is something the original Alien movie had as well and made you connect with these people.
