Punks nowadays are, by a vast majority, a large lot of hedonists with no real message or understanding of how to get one across to anyone else outside the scene if they had the inkling of one. To be honest, it seems this scene has fallen into a degradation of itself. It was a lower class mentality with some good ideas. Most of those ideas came to pass, or were insurmountable. So implosion was its only course with no new inflow of ideas. Listen to the modern punk. Go smoke crack.
Who cares whether or not music is "punk" or not anymore, I love Green Day and I love Screeching Weasel. If you watch videos from Woodstock in '94 you can see Mike Dirnt wearing a Screeching Weasel t-shirt.
@Velocityraptor1000 yes lol...I figured this out shortly after I posted that comment...lol :P I didn't know he was actually IN it, I thought he just liked them...until I did some Wikipedia research lol
@PittsDick77 When I was 12 years old I had this album and oldskool SW was my favorite and I could relate to them, this was one of my favorites on the album. 5 years from then I never knew how much I can relate to this song. I lived at a flop house for a few months and the landlord kicked us out, now Im trying to find a job that doesnt drug test but I have to finish my GED and I never learned how to drive or even want to, Im broke and stoned and can't get a job. But donating plasma kicks ass :D
Green Day isnt punk. I really wish you kids could get that through your ignorant fucking heads! There just little shitass sellouts who are doing a fucking play on broadway I believe?.......Doesnt sound very punk rock to me.
@kolbytard Green Day is punk like Peter Griffin is black, if you dig REALLY deep in the past you might find some punk rock roots there, but they are covered up quite well. I still dig their early works but i don't see the same sort of animosity towards the mainstream from them, since they were the mainstream ya know. to me that is the definition of punk rock, a distaste for the mainstream.
Why is there a fucking argument about Green Day on EVERY punk video I watch? It's getting really annoying. Either you like them or you don't. Anyway, it shouldn't matter whether or not a band is "punk" anymore.
Okay people say a punk rock band is a band that plays whathey want. Thats bullshit. A punk band needs FAST guitar riffs, FAST DRUMS,and a sick ass bass
okay but what about political punk? you know punk allthough always saying they hated authority...there always seemed to be political happenings qoated in their songs....
What people on this dont realize is that selling out is just another way to get your message across, which is the original idea of punk in general. If a punk band sells out to get more listeners then that band has accomplished what they were trying to do. A punk group that only performs and stays underground doesnt really go anywhere so only a limited number of people listen to them. Bad Religion could be argued as a sell out group, this has helped get their message across so its in what punk is
I know what you mean, but i think selling out is when you completely abandon youre fans in order to make money or get famous. Its ludicris to assert that its okay to stab your loyal fans in the back in order to get support from a mainstream culture that doesnt even realize politicians are traitorous wretches.
right how can you truly sellout when 98 percent of people havent even heard of you? Someone kicked me fiercely in the sack when green day started wearing eyeliner and making poppy crapheap musick. Insomniac, smoothe, kerplunk, and dookie all rocked. Dookie changed the way i see music and i still play insomniac all the time.
@germanfuzaloo Yeah on one of their early albums or eps the credits read: billy joe: lyrics guitar eyeliner or something like that...it jsut wasn't as noticeable. I dont really care this song is amazing. im going to riotfest in oct-bad religion lawrence arms, flatliners holy hell im psyched.
For some reason though, I've never seen Sum 41 as an actual "punk" band. Green Day, however, were a really good example of pop-punk... You know, until they released American Idiot and matured =/
hmmm interesting point, but not all punk bands have DIY ethics and whatnot. There are a lot of em' do I'll admit but it just depends on the band, you know what I mean, eh?
it would be true that punk bands didnt sell out if they kept making songs which are inspired by what punk is all about: drugs, being an asshole, hating authority, etc. but then they start making bullshit songs about war and crap like global warming so they shouldnt be called "punk" anymore. they may still be talented, but they are by no means punk (such as Green Day and Blink-182)
well, punk could be argued as dead, to that standard, but you gotta realize, all genres change, like look at metal for instance, metal started from this Black Sabboth style and now its like everywhere from Lamb of God, to CoB, you know what I mean? All genre sounds different over time, that doesn't mean its 'dead' or anything or that it has to talk about certain things, cause if it only can talk about drugs, sex, etc. then that in a sense an authorized ideal
That's true, there is this kick ass story where Johnny Ramone drank all of his dad's alcohol, so his dad kicked him out, so Johnny was pissed off and he started a fight with some kid, and the kid's dad ran over and broke the fight up, and Johnny punched him right in the face. Punk as fuck.
Except that you're wrong. Punk does not define lyrics. A band could sing about how awesome their gerbil is and they'd be just as punk as the band singing about global warming or the one singing about how mad they are at their parents. But, be honest, the topics that you mentioned are childish. Check out Defiance, Ohio and Aus Rotten. Those lyrics are amazing.
metaphors and hidden meanings. most people dont even get the misfit's lyrics because they dont understand danzig sings in metaphors in almost all his songs. same goes for alot of other punk bands. anti christian, anti establishment. the same thing as the christian you could say but the anti of it. but its a necessary course to take because if you dont do it who will? that is stop the team you are against you know what i mean? i hate racist, is hating a group for hating another
@lonewolf060 Danzig sang about movie monsters, Edgar Allen Poe poems, and George Lucas movies. a lot of punk bands do sing about actual shit, but a lot of other really great punk bands don't sing about shit and that's what makes the genre as diverse and amazing as it is.
@jamesman74 you cant put rules on what punk is, youre defeating the purpose if ya do. punks not about drugs, concerts, etc. it was originally a way to not conform with everybody else, a way to prostest and rebel. but its backwards now because you cant tell the difference between a trendy poser punk, or a real one, they all look the same. So thats why ya here "punks not dead" its not dead, it just sucks. it was real from 75-81
@nowthatsclass666 punk never dies. It surfaces and gets exploted then it goes back underground when it boils like lava and resurfaces again when it gets good. and the cycle continues
@jamesman74 well singing about war is still punk,if you say it in a bad way like, fuck off fighting the goverment are the reason of this shit, but if you say it like "ooooooooo support the soldier's kiddies" that isnt punk
i discovered this amazing band 2 days ago and most music ive ever heard i realize sucks now. Hahahaha ive listened to this song at least 7 times in the past two hours.
@crassisdead God I want that vinyl. Was almost gonna get it, too. Decided on some Defiance, Ohios which are really cheap from No Idea Records.
WMG took down all of my boogada songs recently, I had to counter them. When Mike told me he didn't have the rights for them I freaked out, then I learned Recess Records did. And they let me put music up, so the songs can stay.
This WMG stuff is really getting old... I got Boogadaboogadaboogada on Asian Man for about 11 bucks. I've been thinking about getting the Defiance Ohio/Ghost Mice split from No Idea.
@punkCDsampler Yeah, I've been a little unhappy with Weasel lately, he's starting to become more of a prick than he was before... WMG too, they were attacking Jeff Ott for his own songs recently. If they try that on me, I'm suing them straight away. XD
hey fairyfucktard... i don't really get how you can call Green Day sellouts. Punk rock is the most judgemental genre of music out there, yet it teaches the exact opposite. I like Green Day just as much as I like Screeching Weasel or Pansy Division or Operation Ivy. They were just successful. Punk rock is punk rock so shut the fuck up about Green Day
ya put there is a point.......green day had a good amount of sucses when dookie came out even with warning and nimrod they dident have to go all guy liner and name brand jeans and diziner jackets and bullshit like that.....and there music sucks now!
Band on a major label (which can provide them with enough money to afford decent food, shelter, clothing, equipment, venue booking, album production, touring circumstances, parties, merchandising, transportation, and advertising) = total shit to you, even if the music didn't change a bit.
And here I was, thinking that those things were important to a real musician. Silly me!
C'mon kiddies, fucking wake up and smell the booze on your clothes. This isn't what it's about.
As much as the the judgemental nature of punk can be a bad thing, it has been the driving force in keeping punk alive and well without the interferance of mainstream media. There are some unfortunate casualties of the fickle nature of punk fans, but because the punk scene is constantly scrutinizing its memberage it is still a virtualy pure genre. With that said, sighning to fat or epitaph doesn't make you a sell out, neither does making money, its changing onesself soley to make money.
What are you talking about? Epitaph is one thing because the company was sold, but Fat Wreck Chords? Fat Mike of NOFX started it and still owns it.... he wanted a label that was there purely for the bands.
I wasn't knocking either of them, but alot of punks feel that if a band is on fat, they have sold out. I was trying to combat that fun little bit of idiocey.

Green Day doesn't suck. Well... ok, their last album puts that in debate.... but they certainly didn't suck on ther first 4 albums, unlike Blink 182, which has always been lame.
if anybody fucked punk it was fall out boy and good charlote.blink just went poppy but i wouldnt say they ever fucked it.greenday might of since they gave birth to the emo shit we got now when they went mainstream.
fuck people respect the others damn in EVERY FUKIN SINGLE VIDEO THEY ARE COMMENTING OH THIS BAND SUCKS OH THIS IS SHIT OH I hATE BLINK ITS STUPID IF DONT LIKE THEM DONT TALK ABOUT THEM JUST LISTEN TO THE SONG YOU WANT... I DONT CARE WHAT YOUR GOING TO RESPOND SO DONT WASTE YOUR TIME .....
AND BLINK ITS ANOTHER STYLE OF PUNK ITS FUNNY PUNK ITS A BAND WITH YOU LAUGH EVEN WHEN THEY ARE IN A LIVE CONCERT... FACK
na im disrespecting blink.i liek there early skate punk stuff but its there later stuff and there new fans i just cant fucking stand.they drive me crazy
Well if you want to have a conversation... what about kurdt kobain? did he sell out punk? i dont think so Nirvana is my favorite band. He helped(with sonic youth and many more)bring garage music to the mainstream. But how you would feel to be THAT guy...the one who made it cool to be punk.Torn jeans in the mainstream oh no! Ha ha just wondering how others feel aboot this:and the story with green day is the same as blink-first albums rocked then they sold out;they SOut,but the olds still there.
Hung up on labels much? Grunge is a media term used to sell tshirts. Nirvana has very punk roots check out KAOS demo or anything done in the 80s. Kurt remains a punker even in death. I wouldnt have even heard of punk rock if it wasnt for him and i might be a shitty person if i never read about him. I learned that racism and misogyny will only lead to more hatred, punk is freedom, and as long as there's some kid fiddling with a guitar punk will not die. Daft punk eh?
agree i only longboard to screaching weasels blink and bad religion i cant stand the hip hop skaters now days drives me fuckin crazy skating and hearing souja boy
@sk8erboi4321 Fuck that, every skater over here is into Bring Me the Horizon..it's all BMTH and Oli Sykes and blablabla..and they all wonder why their crotch hurts after skating in those generation killing pants. :/
Skinny jeans make the wearer look like a complete goob in my opinion. I mean they're not comfortable, they're made out of shitty fabric, and on top of that now they're cliche. I'll stick to my 501s and let my nuts breathe.
What? Baggy pants drive me crazy because they are so un-comfortable. I like fabric pressed on my skin. Also what kind of ghetto skinnies are you thinking of? I shop at thrift stores and the fabric is normal jean fabric.....
@MyDookieGoesKerplunk Try a nice boot cut jean or a pair o' dickies, you can bend over in em without a rip goin' all the way down your leg, and they are comfortable as hell.
@MyDookieGoesKerplunk wtf man "baggy pants are uncomfortable" wtf is wrong with you I have been wearing pegged up tight pants for years and sure Im used to them, sure they are verry comfy after you get used to them but I still think that normal pants are more comfortable, I went to a job interview yesterday wearing slacks and I felt like I was on xtc down there.
Loved this cd, probably my favorite Screeching Weasel album. Dont have it anymore, was stolen from my car about 14 years ago, them fuckers. Hope they were expecting rap cause all i had in there was indie underground nonmainstream goodness.

this is real music... not for profit but for the love of it.
nalfiend 2 years ago
Oh, we make profit on it alright, just not as much as mainstream pop-stars, nor is that the only reason.

RockstarRacc00n 2 years ago

Well if you want to have a conversation... what about kurdt kobain? did he sell out punk? i dont think so Nirvana is my favorite band. He helped(with sonic youth and many more)bring garage music to the mainstream. But how you would feel to be THAT guy...the one who made it cool to be punk.Torn jeans in the mainstream oh no! Ha ha just wondering how others feel aboot this:and the story with green day is the same as blink-first albums rocked then they sold out;they SOut,but the olds still there.
primalsincerity84 2 years ago
@primalsincerity84 but isnt Nirvana like grunge?
they still rock but they're not punk i think at all?
husbydaftpunkey 2 years ago
Hung up on labels much? Grunge is a media term used to sell tshirts. Nirvana has very punk roots check out KAOS demo or anything done in the 80s. Kurt remains a punker even in death. I wouldnt have even heard of punk rock if it wasnt for him and i might be a shitty person if i never read about him. I learned that racism and misogyny will only lead to more hatred, punk is freedom, and as long as there's some kid fiddling with a guitar punk will not die. Daft punk eh?

Are you dissing skin tight skinny jeans? If so, then fuck you. I hate baggy pants. If its not skin tight its shit in my opinion.
MyDookieGoesKerplunk 1 year ago
@MyDookieGoesKerplunk
Skinny jeans make the wearer look like a complete goob in my opinion. I mean they're not comfortable, they're made out of shitty fabric, and on top of that now they're cliche. I'll stick to my 501s and let my nuts breathe.
0SexyEd0 1 year ago
@0SexyEd0
What? Baggy pants drive me crazy because they are so un-comfortable. I like fabric pressed on my skin. Also what kind of ghetto skinnies are you thinking of? I shop at thrift stores and the fabric is normal jean fabric.....
MyDookieGoesKerplunk 1 year ago
@MyDookieGoesKerplunk Try a nice boot cut jean or a pair o' dickies, you can bend over in em without a rip goin' all the way down your leg, and they are comfortable as hell.
cocolaboom 1 year ago
