Actually folks, Avatar is more inspired by Dune (The books as well as the 1984 part-triumph/part-treckwreck from David Lynch) since Cameron is a huge fan of Dune books and the 1984 masterpiece Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (aka Warriors of the Wind) which Cameron was influenced by back in 1993 when he wrote the script as he had to wait till 2004 for the technology to evolve to get his vision right. Watch Dune movies, Nausicaa and Princess Mononoke to even Heavy Metal

The first novel about their romance was written in the early 19th century!!! Since then NUMEROUS movies have been made in the history of cinematography about them!!! So please... Avatar is 100% a copy of the love-affair between Pocahontas (a native girl, daughter of the tribal chief) and John Smith (an invader/colonist). The rest is known...

As for the main storyline, stripped by all the effects around it, it's nothing but a copy of the well known romance between Pocahontas and John Smith. That's what I wanted to say. ;) Pocahontas revealed to John Smith a virgin world full of magic, innocence, and pride, a world which was on the edge of extinction, and natives fully in connection with nature! I don't see any difference...

Have you read the Dune novels? the awesomest Sci-fi novels ever. The 1984 movie was however a faustrating monstrosity from David Lynch who was a poor choice for a director when it could have been Alejandro Jorodowsky or Ridley Scott. The 2000 mini-series was good but had tons of problems but Children of Dune was excellent.

@beavertown2006 Everything's been done, it copied hundreds of concepts from other works of art. That's how art works. Of course it makes no sense to have floating mountains but to still have water still flowing off of them and the ability to fall off yourself...and the water would run out almost immediately - it couldn't last for years and years...but it all looks cool, so many people did it long ago, although none as realistically looking and animated.

I create art myself so I spoke about the artistic side mainly since it's nearly impossible to create anything truly unique that doesn't resemble anything ever done before which still looks appealing. By that I mean that you can draw random lines and those will be "unique", but it won't look good or like anything recognizable.
