@The247Trucker Yep!!! That's right!!! GIT-R-DONE!!!! This is a genuine MAN'S truck!!! The 318 Detroits just have that GIT-R-DONE sound to them!!! I happen to own a '74 Transtar COE with 318 Detroit like this one, All manual too, The only thing power operated is the windshield wipers!!! LOL!!!
You always knew you where driving a truck with the 318! Armstrong P/S, no A/C. Run a 1000 miles driving this truck and you work for every penny! Road test every new driver on this truck and you'll know if they can drive. Git' R Done!
@dieselman723 No problem! A 4stroke engine does as they say suck squeeze push and bang.LOL. So #1 is the intake stroke (fuel&air) #2compression stroke(pre ignition) #3 power stroke(explosion) #4 exhaust stroke(exhaust). So a 2 stroke goes #1 intake&compression all in the same cycle and #2 is power&exhaust stroke.Gasoline 2 strokes require a mix of oil and gasoline. But these diesel engines have a oil pan and pump so they run on straight fuel. You are enlightened now my son! Enjoy!
Awesome...just awesome. Oh man I love Detroits. The 8v71 was one of the best. A bit thirsty, but unbeatable reliability. The note they have gives me goosebumps. Bury me with a Detroit.
@Haffschlappe Not all American truck engines sound like this, This is an old 2 cycle Detroit Diesel, They have a characteristic turbine like sound to them, If you listen to a 4 cycle truck engine like a Caterpillar, They have a nice, low growl to them because they don't run as high, So go listen to some 4 cycle Caterpillar or Cummins diesels and let me know what you think.
What I would allways like to know is why the american truck engines compared to German /European trucks are quite high RPM sound?
If you take a Mercedes Benz from that era thats more deep diesel engine like sound, the US Trucks and busses have more turbine like high rpm "smooth" sound instead of low frequency diesel growl.
@Haffschlappe The 2-cycle Detroit Diesel engines really didn't turn that many RPM's. They were governed from the factory at 2100 RPM. The reason they sound like they're turning high RPM's is that they are 2-cycle engines and 8-culinders, so you're hearing a LOT of firing impulses. The engines also had a Roots-type gear-drven supercharger which also contributed to a lot of gear whine and mechanical noise. They did have an incredible sound to them!!
My grandpa was a old International COE man. He started out with a 1960 Emeryville, then went on to own a 1966 C0-4000, 1973 4070A, 1978 4070B, 1986 9670 and retired with a 1990 9670. I can still hear him say: "Well here is the thing with those old cornbinders, they're ugly as sin, ride like hell but dependable and tough. They didnt fix the ugly part until the 80's" God rest him
Give loads of credit to the old timers who drove these rigs cross country year after year without air conditioning, cruise control, automatic transmissions, power steering, air suspension, air supported cabs, sound proofed cabs, tilt steering wheels and every other creature comfort, save for a small bunk in the back. You road warriors always get the lane ahead from me.
The U.S.Army's 37th Trans Group had the Transtars with a 12V71Detroit in Germany back in the 1970's It would pull rings around the German truckers on the Autobahn. Great video brought back memories.
Awweeeeesome!!!! man, When i was a kid around 1985, the trucks that really made that kind of sound were GMCs, Brockways, and Diamond Reos!. I wish that they remake those old detroit engines.
Now that brings back tons of memories from way back when for me when I drove a 4070A with a 318 and a 13 speed Ranger. It was big power back in them days... until the big Cummins 335's came out...
Great video. The sound is just awesome. Brings lots of memories back when I was kid and used to watch these Detroit Diesel powered trucks run up and down US 79 in Arkansas... I used to sit on a gas meter out by the road and watch 'em all day. Not a better sounding truck than one with a Detroit -71 or a -92T. MHO of course. Would love to get a ride in your truck!
First truck I rode in on the highway.Same specs,a Ryder rental in '74.Everythings the same, but you're not my uncle Jim! LOL....Thanks for posting....Nice driving!!!!
Brings back so many memories, my late father drove almost the exact same truck. The only difference was their trucks had 16 speed spicer transmissions. He drove for Pet Milk in Frankfort MI from 1970 till 1987 and joined the million mile club while enduring all the sweet music of a detroit.
LOVE that scremain' Detroit and the bumpy ride. As Mr. Henderson would put it, that was all you had back then. When you went down the highway, that was what you were stuck with. A Detroit screaming at you and when you came to the streets to drive thru in the big cities to make your deliveries, you were bouncing all over the place.
@Streetcar1743 yeah, I put over 300,000 on a '73 just like that. Seattle - Portland - Vancouver, and down to the Bay area. So much noise, so cramped (for my 6, 1" foot frame), and so much shifting. My last truck, a Kenworth T600 with a N14 and 10 speed could go between Seattle and Portland with just a couple of shifts! That old International needed hundreds of shifts!!!
I got one like this that i would like to sale......it would be a great restore project .....it is a 1974 with a 350 Detroit (318 with Turbo) Glad to see someone still likes to play with these old trucks............wish i had the time
Thanks for the ride... but I want to know, what are we hauling and where are we going?
