Thank you for uploading this little gem! She's a true genius, willing to take chances, "Play"with the music and experiment, and she just lives every moment. She is true inspiration.
This recording sounds nothing wrong with the piano techniques but seems more like Martha was having fun!. Compared with her usual performance, this time she chose a very creative interpretation of Shostakovich’s 1st piano concerto that gave this work more colors of modern music, making me think of jazz. I think she did amuse herself quite a lot as well as the audience.
people seem to assume that the expression “rhythmic precision” means playing metronomically. A computer plays metronomically, as well as a bad pianist, whereas Martha Argerich OWNS time through a flexible, but organic pulse, which is subordinate to the musical expression, and may change naturally. I’ve seen her live last year, she is a force of nature at the piano, possesses an inner strength capable of converging time and space into an unique mystical, dazzling experience. Sheer energy.
Performing is neither amusing nor glamorous. It is extremely hard work and decidedly a job requiring great concentration and dedication, I do not personally know Ms. Argerich but I was married to a concert pianist. I can assure everyone that things are not as they may seem from the audience. The great capacity this pianist has to communicate and to possess the instrument makes her performances enthralling. I doubt she has lost her focus. Maybe she's just abysmally bored with this piece!
let's face it, argerich isn't playing any longer with the same energy she had in the past. She's still playing better than most pianists of course but i miss the black haired martha, I can't help! See at 6:50 how she slows down! Now her fans will come saying I'm stupid and she's still as good as in the past, if not better, but the true is that SHE LOST something and we have to admit that. It's evident in other recent performances too. I hope she will retire before it's too late. Still i love her
@tieroz You prefer the old Martha, and I can understand that. She definitely had something then that she doesn't show now, but that doesn't mean she's losing it. She's constantly changing, and we all lose something as we gain something. I personally loved all her changes throughout her career, (Except maybe mid 2000s for some reason..) and I especially love her recent performances. She breathes music effortlessly, and her technique is impeccable and energy phenomenal.
@tieroz :D Argerich is usually accused of playing with too much energy/speed. I'd have to say I prefer the new Argerich with many of the performances, especially works by Chopin and Schumann. I also prefer the newer versions of Shostakovich to the old one (I've still not listened to this one though).
She's definitely not the same as in the past, there's no denying this.
@tieroz I wouldn't say she's lost anything; she's just evolved. You can't expect an artist -- or any human, for that matter -- to remain the exact same throughout life. :) I think it's more a matter of taste than anything else. My favourite Martha is the 80s/90s Martha... but that can also change from day to day though :)
@tieroz The piano solo part, starting at 5:30 till 6:20, is about the same time in the DG recording with conductor Faerber in 1993 (4:46 to 5:36).
As for the part you mention, starting from 6:49 to 7:02 when the orchestra part comes in, that's about the same time in the recording too (6:02 to 6:14/6:15). However, the empahsis between these two versions is slightly different.
@tieroz I don't really share the same opinion. Listen for example to her performance of the Finale of Chopin's 1st Piano Concerto in Vienna from last year (which is on YouTube, too). I find it it really outstanding, let it be only on a purely pianistic/technical point of view, but I also think that her interpretation (especially in the first two movements) gained a lot in terms of maturity. Yet I wouldn't say that you are wrong or that I'm right, everyone may have a different perception.
@tieroz Moron, Martha is like a fine wine who gets better with age. Doesn't every pianist change with age? Hello? She might have lost something, but she's gained something better in return. You are an incomparable idiot who needs a piano lesson!
@MozartFong: dear mozartfong don't be so frustrated, man!. I wish you all people could be more open minded and admit Argerich is no longer the Lioness she was
30 years ago. She is becoming rhythmically UNSTABLE and that is evident
from many videos and recordings. Her legendary precision is a bit missed
too, you can hide mistakes with audio editing but who owns the original tapes knows
Have you heard the Lutoslawsky Variations she played with Kissin this year in Verbier? A DISASTER compared to the old recordings. Have you heard her last Tchaikovsky PC1 in NY about 10 years ago? A disaster compared to the 1970/'80/'90 recordings. Etc etc. No matter if you post videos like that one titled "watch this and see why Argerich is the greatest pianist in the world": that video is sped up and note-corrected so it sounds perfect. What a shame!
The true is she can't play like in the past and not because she is a more mature pianist now, but simply because, I repeat, she lost something technically, she is becoming rhythmically UNSTABLE not for musicale/tastes reasons: she lost something in her ability of listening to herself while playing. This is MY OPINION and you have to respect that without being offensive!
God I love this concerto.

How did you manage to get Argerich to agree for you to set your iPhone on the piano? So cool! Thanks!

@tieroz maybe she's too overconfident, or because its just an encore and she just loses her focus.

@tieroz I'd like to be such a disaster! I'll take La Argerich imperfections over most note-perfect virtuosi with their machine gun like precision.

@tieroz yep, i have the ORIGINAL video (of the prokofiev 3rd in verbier 2007), with a ton of mistakes...
ALSO, her tchaikovsky 3rd in japan is also note-corrected, especially the 3rd movement.
however, i think her chopin 1 is still quite good. her rach 3 in the 1980s too.

@tieroz the verbier recording of the lutoslawsky variations is amazing! i definitely prefer it over most others...

@tieroz to be honest, i think she would be the first to realize if she was losing her touch. and i think she would stop performing if this was true
