I put a rotary selector in my passive bass circuit, and attached several capacitors. I like the various sound options, but the selector switch makes electronic clicking noises whwn I switch. Do I need a resistor somewhere?
@pleximanic yeah I know. I seem like a pot smoker to a lot of people. It's funny that it's something I tried in the late 80's and early 90's and did not like it at all. :D I like nicotine and caffeine though.
Thanks for the post. I've gotten an OBP-3 TK/PP. Tested the pots and all are within spec. I'm setting it up with two volume knobs as you did. The bass it's going into is a Dean that was active with what I think are passive pickups. They show 15.75K on the bridge and 13.63 on the neck unit. It had a blend pot with a 100K volume unit. Now I wonder if I should go with two 50K's or just try out everything from 1 meg to 25K and see what happens. Any suggestions?
I plan to install it or xtct 2 bands into my hohner b2 headless. Do you think it is possible or not? The space is very limit. It is about the same space to Telecaster guitar...
@OJMAH mine is a few years old. The dimensions may be different on a brand new one today. This one is (5.5 x 3.5 x 1.3 centimeters) 2 & 1/8 x 1 & 5/8 x 1/2 inches. The long end, 2 & 1/8 inches, needs an extra half inch of space for the wires to curve out of it.
The obp-1 is bass and treble boost only. I wired mine with a passive tone control. With this setup I find that I have more control over my sound than I do with my Jazz bass with the obp-3 that has a mid control. Also it is on a 9 volt circuit because of space issues in my cavity and it works fine, in fact I can't tell any difference between 9 and 18 volts.
I just got one installed in my bass guitar and I noticed that when I touch the wires inside like you are doing it picks up radio frequencies and also when I go very close to any bass amp it has like a buzz but once I stay like 5 feet away the buzz stops, any help?
@Kuuuks I think that is a pickups thing not a preamp thing. It sounds like the pickups need to be grounded and the bass body cavities need to be shielded. The black area inside mine is shielding paint.
awsome review. i just got the obp3 and i think i see what you mean about the blend : / what exactly do you mean though when you say it didnt sound right? i notice that when the blend is in center is the two pickups sound quite compared to either one or the other on full. same experience? and did the 2 volume config change this?
how would you say this pre does with portraying the mids? i've been looking into this, but i'm weary of buying without the ability to control those mids.
BY FAR get the OBP3 if you want mids. it has a mid frequecy switch that allows you to dial in on 2 diffferent frequency of the mid spectrum. i just got the preamp for my bass and its a beast
Does anyone know whether there are any differences between the old and new packaging styles for the OBP-1?
The preamp in this video is a flat rectangular box with the wires exiting to one side, but the new preamps (Like the one I bought) are packaged the same way as the OBP-2 and OBP-3 preamps.
thanks for telling us about the OBP-1. Just want to know what this preamp would sound like on my fender custom shop jazz bass IV? Does the preamp go well with EMG j pups?
The signal is transmitted in basically the same fashion: Magnets with coils of wire wrapped around them "pick up" the string vibrations (hence the name) and transfer those vibrations directly into an electrical current.
The difference is active pickups have a pre-amp built in to the pickups or mounted on board the bass. With passives, all you can do is cut frequencies. Actives can cut and add frequencies, and can also cancel out unwanted frequencies (60hz, for instance).
Hey, I want to install a 9 volt Aguilar OBP-2 on my Warwick Thumb which the pots are Vol-Blend-Treble/Bass stacked. I don't know anything about wiring and I want to do this because the MEC preamp sounds muddy. I don't know how to install it ,but I could use some advice. Will the Aguilar OBP-2 fit in?
yeah I know I was readin' and replying to stuff today, and I felt like that appears quite retarded that I took 2 days to write 'linear'. I saw your question today not 2 days ago :D
i understand, babes ... an awesome machine guru such as yourself must set his time slice quantum to the optimal value. i just feel honoured i got a reply at all. how long until ur program allocates some runtime to reply to my channel comment?
samtwist got the reply he was looking for. Less than 15 people even know I upload vids to this jaydavee profile since I haven't gotten around to telling people yet. I'm waiting until I upload a good one before I start spreading it.
the two bands that are boostable are louder, but they are louder in a range where players don't really need the volume. It's headroom where you can get lots of boost without coming close to maxing out the preamp. It does have a good feeling to be able to stay way below the middle of the tone controls instead of having to hike them way up.
any diference between opb-3tk,opb-3tkpp,opb-3sk ? which one is better?

@jaydavee I just noticed that it only does it when I turned the treble pass half but when the treble is below half it doesn't do it,

The OBP-1 doesn't have to run on 18V, it works on 9V if you want to do it that way. It also works at 27V, which is what I did with mine.

hi to you all!!i want to learn whats the difference between active-passive bass-pickups.
Not the sound difference-just how the signal is transmitted in active basses?how the signal is transmitted in passive?

More often than not, combo controls (in any electronic setting) are more trouble than separate discretes.
