The thing that annoyed me was that it really isn't her album. She has been produced out of it and just sounds so anonymous. It really should be Dave Sitek feat SJ.
Also, the sleeve notes for the album were morbidly annoying. It seemed they wanted a clap for any thought or decision that they came to. Everything seemed to have some kind of magic significance and considering they were covering such an enigmatic artist it seemed like they missed the point of Tom's mystery.
give her a break, she has the opportunity to sing so she is trying something new. she makes it sound like that on purpose. you don't have to listen to it. and because she is covering a tom waits song, she is 'devoid of gravity and depth' right.. or maybe she's just a fan of his music and it means something to her.
Everything these people do is a calculated marketing ploy! They are a brand, or product (though nothing like as cynical or ruthless as Madonna in this case). These 'curl um out', and we 'suck um up'! Ole Scarlett has latched on to Tom Waits as something with intrinsic depth or gravity because she is devoid of any! Watych out for Kylie Minogue sings Leonard Cohen!

jcabb1 - I was thinking the same thing. The music has a similar insomniac haze feel, and the music video is definitely shot in the same style with all the blurring city motion shots. Her voice isn't awful but her performance is as robotic and unmusical as it gets; she sings right on the beat and shows no looseness or feel to it. The production job worked well in bringing a different angle to Waits' music but she's really boring to listen to. She needs to perform more and learn to loosen up.
It's probably not a good idea for her first album to be a Tom Waits cover album. She gives it a good try, but not even close. I've tried to listen to it more, but just can't do it. Maybe if the actual production of the album was better?? She has an ok voice, just not made for this kind of music, very few could do a good job covering Waits. Good thing about music is, you don't have to be smart to listen, you just have to know what you like.
This is a moral quandary for me. As one who grew up on Tom Waits and ranks his music as some of the best... to actually... kind of like this version more..
I think it's good because it's just as unique as she is, her voice is actually REALLY good, but they way she sings this song fits perfectly with the tone of it. no one is forcing ppl to listen to this so if you don't like it, move on to a diff artist. :D

The thing that annoyed me was that it really isn't her album. She has been produced out of it and just sounds so anonymous. It really should be Dave Sitek feat SJ.
Also, the sleeve notes for the album were morbidly annoying. It seemed they wanted a clap for any thought or decision that they came to. Everything seemed to have some kind of magic significance and considering they were covering such an enigmatic artist it seemed like they missed the point of Tom's mystery.

give her a break, she has the opportunity to sing so she is trying something new. she makes it sound like that on purpose. you don't have to listen to it. and because she is covering a tom waits song, she is 'devoid of gravity and depth' right.. or maybe she's just a fan of his music and it means something to her.

Everything these people do is a calculated marketing ploy! They are a brand, or product (though nothing like as cynical or ruthless as Madonna in this case). These 'curl um out', and we 'suck um up'! Ole Scarlett has latched on to Tom Waits as something with intrinsic depth or gravity because she is devoid of any! Watych out for Kylie Minogue sings Leonard Cohen!

jcabb1 - I was thinking the same thing. The music has a similar insomniac haze feel, and the music video is definitely shot in the same style with all the blurring city motion shots. Her voice isn't awful but her performance is as robotic and unmusical as it gets; she sings right on the beat and shows no looseness or feel to it. The production job worked well in bringing a different angle to Waits' music but she's really boring to listen to. She needs to perform more and learn to loosen up.

It's probably not a good idea for her first album to be a Tom Waits cover album. She gives it a good try, but not even close. I've tried to listen to it more, but just can't do it. Maybe if the actual production of the album was better?? She has an ok voice, just not made for this kind of music, very few could do a good job covering Waits. Good thing about music is, you don't have to be smart to listen, you just have to know what you like.

I think it's good because it's just as unique as she is, her voice is actually REALLY good, but they way she sings this song fits perfectly with the tone of it. no one is forcing ppl to listen to this so if you don't like it, move on to a diff artist. :D

It´s amazing!!! i never though she actually had talent... she has a litlle M83, Catpower, CocoRosie... is good alternative pop and her voice sounds so different and sooo sexy, so raw, wow, she is a great actress but she has all my respect as a interpretour... I love this song... BE OPEN MINDED!!! IT´S MUSIC THERE´S A LITTLE BIT OF MUSIC FOR EVERYONE... THIS IS TRULY FOR ME.

Yeah, this sounds terrible. It's "unique" in that most people who release records actually have at least a shred of vocal talent. If this woman were not a successful, beautiful actress, she would have never been given a record deal, period.
