Jack the tab slag off the danube on a hard high and dark ride a ruckerful a fistful a loud song a song in Deminished fame torrid, horrid and hatred mixed the love of the need for greed Texas and its tranquil whores whoring for cherryade and palasade flesh . suck the asphalt long reign pavement . j ruiz .
I'll ever forget the girl who sold me my Slanted and Enchanted LP, the knowing look that this would change everything for me. This was my first exposure to music not necessarily sanctioned by commercial radio, and I haven't looked back since. Kurt - who? My mission was to espouse the gospel according to Franklin Bruno, et alia ...
It stinks when jokers on the internet will harangue Cobain fans simply because he got famous and didn't fulfill his potential, and therefore that supposedly makes them saps and not cool.. It's so pointless to be a snob. I don't like most of Cobain's music, but that's not exactly relevant to state on a Pavement page & I need now to put an end to frivolous comparisons and prideful comments. Fuck pride. I concede that Milk It (Demo) rocks swell...
The intro was definitely with guitars. I don't think Pavement really dabbled with synths at least until Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain.
The effect is created using a flanger (minimum rate, max everything else) followed by a shit ton of distortion. Probably some sustain and reverb to give it that cavernous feel. Play harmonics over that and you'll get the intro to Texas Never Whispers.
@SOADafi. I could be wrong and I probably am but it doesn't sound like a guitar to me. I know some synths that can pull that off but that's just from my personal experience. You gotta use a hell of a lot of gain though.
Just so's we're all clear here, this was Watery,Domestic - the last song but was re-released on the 2-disc version of Slanted and Enchanted. This is definitely different material from S&E, a whole different sound and ethic.
I defy anyone to generate a hermeneutic that satisfactorily explains the lyrics to any of these songs.
So I didn't study hermeneutics or pavement but I like the lions song and would love to take a stab at interpreting it:
1) we live a uniform and prescribed life.
2) We distract ourselves with the heroics of the home team battling it out against the arch rivals from 20 miles westward.
3) As a result we have crap government and neglect more important things, but what can you expect when we elect governments the same mentality as cheering for school football teams?
does anyone know what kind of distortion they use in the intro of the song? I keep on hearing it in an assload of songs and im damn curious on what they use
Placebo covered the bit at the beginning of Texas Never Whispers, to great effect i think, it's on their song Slave To The Wage. Check it out if you havn't heard it.
One of my all time favorite songs. Can ANYONE think of song like it? It is unique, even THEY never made a song that sounds like this. One of the best 'laid back west coast solos' ever as well. There is sole in here.
No I can't. That's why this E.P. ranks among my altime favourites. They slowly lost me however. I don't know if they changed or I did but for me this record will always be their best.
yes watery domestic is amazing, it is their best work, along with maybe S&E, Crooked Rain, Wowee Zowee, Brighten the Corners and Terror Twilight; plus some EP singles of course, and BBC recordings; and I would not want to leave out Malkmus' 4 excellent full length releases...
I love Pavement and Malkmus so much I can never overhype them - Perfect Sound Forever. If you don't care for their sound, that's fine. In fact, 99% of people never heard of them so there's clearly not enough hype, or at least it is a niche sound without mass appeal.
A short excerpt from 'Texas never whispers' appears on the ITV Chart Show Indie Chart from November 1992 to January 1993, as the Watery, Domestic EP was in the UK Indie Singles Chart around that time. I've been searching to hear this EP and it is fantastic. I need to go and look for some Pavement albums to find out what their exact style is and where they fit into the history of Indie around the early 90's.
I just got into Slanted And Enchanted by them recently and it just blew me away, it's one of the best indie albums I've ever heard, everything about it is perfect and there's not one track on it that I would skip. You won't be disappointed.
thank god pavement stayed indie and didnt get mixed in with the c*ck rock trash on generic radio stations(with the exception of nirvana)

you know, the Deadsy cover of this song is actually WAY better.
this is really good, but its interesting that a cover could be so much better than the original.

@RustyHackSawRecords maybe if you're a huge tea party/disturbed fan
i think it's really weird and kind of loses. the vocal harmonies are out of place. not to mention they didn't get the lyrics right!

Sounds a lot like a guitar to me. Probably several gain stages, delay, maybe a bit of something like chorus or phaser.
