What is so incredible about Abba?-They, a Swedish group entered "Eurovision" singing about British History in English and then took the World by storm singing in English. 1) Would they have been so successful singing in Swedish, and unknown. 2) Where the hell were the British composers? Abbas songs take universally accepted chord structures (of which this is a classic) 1-4-5 + relative major & minors. All music-whatever the genre-is based upon this from the earliest Hymns thro Elton to Eminem.
True art is like the cruel grandmother who beats her grand-daughter--every tear of which becomes a pearl! How heart-wrenching to realize that this beautiful love song was the swan song for ABBA! Even in the beauty of the poignant feelings and in the carefully crafted sniplets in the video--there is the piercing realization that breakup (and divorce?) were occurring within ABBA even as this song was created! When day dies it produces a glorious sunset just as boredom of life precedes intense joy!
Best version of this song yet! ABBADiego you did a remarkable job! I've viewed 5 or 6 other versions of this song--and they don't even come close! The visual and audio are well-matched...the video picture quality is superb! The sound of the singer is not drowned out by the crowd's loud interferences...The 'extended' clip (train insert) should be included in this video song (as you have done) --unlike the other versions I've seen. All in all--I'm pleased! Excellent version of excellent song!?Thxs
I have listened to this song over a million times .... totally in love with it! And as someone before me commented .... It's a unique song.... to emphasize an idea, undermine its complement.... what an Idea ABBA!
I just love ABBA, I remember when this song was released, chilling sad song taken from the album the first ten years. This was the end of ABBA just after the single Under Attack. There was an album planned, but i think they gave up on the idea and just stuck to a greatest hit album.
Why do I found this lonely song so profound and chillingly beautiful ?
..
It is such a tour de force of song writing, every element just comes together to conjure up the very loneliness every single human on earth who has ever experienced the extremes of loneliness and love at last .. it truly touches deep into the very existence of each living person in this world ..
The loneliness of existence is truly beautifully contrasted by the act of finding true love ..
I keep coming back to this song! "Oh, yes, I'm sure my life was well within its usual frame, the day before you came..." "...the latest one by Marilyn French, or something in that style..." I mean, who writes at this level of quality today? And NOBODY can deliver the song better than she can, standing in one spot, wry smiles, raised eyebrows, storytelling at its best...
I discovered this song a few months ago on youtube and return to it frequently.I wonder how I could have missed it first time round when I was at school in the
80`s?I love the sad, elegant and understated lyrics, and the classical undertones
of the backing vocals which seem to imply that the song is a requiem for the group.

I played the vcr tape so many times it broke and I fixed it with tape. I was 14 years old and still today this song gives me the chills. What I would do today to see them live.
Mesmerising. My favourite ABBA track, one that I can listen to for hours. A stunning piece of music and magnificent musicianship. Just how beautiful was Agnetha?
Oh Agnetha baby, supa-yummy mummy or what? Only 33 there! I always thought she looked her best in the final ABBA year of 1982. I love the way she smiles at the guy on the platform! The most womanly, sexy smile every captured on film! This song is a timeless classic from '82 which was a year I loved! Both ABBA and '82 slipped away together and I landed on boring old '83! It can be mixed nicely into Leonard Cohen's 'Everybody Knows' which I always thought sounded similar in rhythm.
one of the last abba songs to be released. i just love the lyrics to it and also a sadness to it. wish they would reform and do a concert in london i would be happy.
@gal5131 Agreed 100 %....There is nothing you could do to make her face better ! That face is a work of art that has captured many a mans heart and will continue to do so as long as these videos are alive and well.I can never get tired of looking into those eyes.Ecstacy ! Peace !
Fabulous performance! Love this song, at first listen sounds pretty simple but when you listen to the lyrics properly you realise what a stunningly intelligent pop song it is.
This is the most heartbreaking record I've ever heard and tells me women who haven't found their life partner are as lost as us men, But wasn't if based on that stunning book The spy who loved me, It;s a very simiilar diary.
STUNNING performance, such a wonderfully melancholic sound and heartbreakingly beautiful vocals...my favourite ABBA song. What happened the original video that was on youtube?
I love this song so much...Its beautiful..Their music changed alot after 1980 the lyrics started becoming more meaniful and thoughtful. If you listen to Waterloo or Dancing queen then listen to this you would almost think it was a different group!
This is one of the most unusual love songs ever written: a celebration of love without a word of praise for love, only an indirect reference to a day when someone came and overturned the dull and ordinary life of a woman...but you can see the light from that day on...the unsaid is stronger than any obvious and worn out word. Terrific work of art!!!
Why did ABBA not reform after their January 1986 appearance? Benny and Bjorn thought that ABBA were not popular anymore, how wrong were they! Even today they should reform for a one off appearance, people don't expect them to jump around the stage like they used to, just seeing them back together for one final time would be enough to satisfy the vast majority of fans.
Swedes speak excellent English, but even so, this is a remarkable song on so many levels, and always makes me cry around 3:40 : ) What a pity their best work came at the end.
ABBADiego thanks for this sharing, we had not yet seen a performance delivered as live of this their most clever story told in an immaculate delivery. Sad the song didn't get the status in history of a world number one
The words, the story and its wording, the insistently throbbing and haunting melody, the harrowing harmonies, the absolutely perfectly fitted voice of Miss Fältskog (let's not even mention her angel face), her breaking notes that breaks all our hearts, the sadness she proves able to convey, everything makes this last song of them their unique "chef d'œuvre".
I know other pieces of comparable strength and beauty. I don't know many of higher.
Despite their undoubted popularity I still get the impression they were one of the most underestimated bands of all time. To me they are the perfect band, they have everything, but it couldn't have worked if the girls would have had average voices. Anna and Frida can really sing..beautifully! Anna and Frida asounding beauty and sexiness is still the icing on the cake. I do not believe we will ever again witness a band with the same ability to reach and touch you on the deepest human level.
@buddaroo not only that. Having gone to music university, I have the knowledge to say their music is the finest in pop. The harmonies, melodies and backgrounds are amazingly written. ABBA is the closest that pop music has ever been and will be to classical music. Four real musicians and, you're so right when you say that these girls could sing! Even their live records (which aren't many) are flawless!
IT'S A FANTASTIC MUSIC AND ABBA IS PURE GOLD! I LOVE THESE FOUR SWEDES!!!!! GREAT AND WONDERFUL VIDEO OF YOURS DIEGO, THANKS AGAIN! HUGS FROM: KIKO - BRAZIL
This was Abba's last major song before they broke up, I think. What a beautiful version and the droll lyrics about Swedish existential ennui ... the day before you cane.
Beautiful song! Wow...she sure look Nice....and...beautiful. I've never heard this song before, and if I didn't see this video, I probably won't recognize that this was one of their songs. I really love it. Thanks for posting.
If ABBA could get back together for another tour of North American, they would be just as popular today and fill arenas everywhere. They could make millions to go with their millions already made. I love this band. Could Agnethia be any more pretty that she is in this video????
I heard this song again on radio 2 today and boy, how wonderful it is. Brings back the memories of my youth. I had an almighty crush on Agnetha. I still love her!
this song talking about my life lol, this was my life before till I falled in love, it is really more than great song, ABBA is amazing group, thank you a lot of the great video...
Dear me... this is really heartbreaking. Probably the best song of them, emotional than all the other songs. I guess they already knew that ABBA is taking the final sprint.
.. and rattling on the roof i must have heard the sound of rain..

At 2:30, Agnetha is as beautiful as only she could be. Still love that voice and face, the very best.

I heard this song again on radio 2 today and boy, how wonderful it is. Brings back the memories of my youth. I had an almighty crush on Agnetha. I still love her!
Abba, Beatles and the Bee Gees - can't beat them.

Genial Musik :) Aldrig har vi i Danmarrk haft et band der har nået dem til sokkerne. (måske med undtagelse a Nephew nu, lige til knæene hehe).

probably the best song ABBA ever produced - brilliant!

This was their last TV performance.
The show was in Saarbrücken, Germany.
Agnetha is very moved when she sings the last time live in TV, you can see it in her face and hear it in her voice.

She did look stunning here at age 32. It is a shame that Father Time catches up to all of us, in his own time.

Well that song is really heartbreaking.

This song is so haunting and sung so beautifully by Agnetha it is truly Abba at their best
10quaker09 2 years ago 3
Dear me... this is really heartbreaking. Probably the best song of them, emotional than all the other songs. I guess they already knew that ABBA is taking the final sprint.

i get goosebumps when i hear the synth bits on the chorus...what an amazing song...some of their best stuff was between 1980 and 1983

Epic! Absolutely wonderful and perfectly produced. My favourite ABBA song. Too sad it was at the very end of their career...
