You can sit upright in that car? Seems a bit small for your height. :-)
500 km range? Must be a minisize tank - or is the gas-mileage just incredibly good compared to infamous US standards?
Gas is expensive in Japan? Visit Germany and you're gonna be shocked. Our liter is at about 2.30 USD, making the gallon roughly 8.75 USD, due to eco-taxes.
Nice video Jason. I always ilke your car, apartment, and driving videos (even though I know you won't be doing another diving video). Looking forward to your apartment/house video (unsure what you actually live in. lol). I know I'm going to be big in most, if not all, of their cars. But, a car as you said is better than a scooter. =)
So how often do you see American cars in Japan? I'm assuming there rare..? How about big American trucks? More rare? With big lifted trucks super popular in here I the states I figure you will see one now and then in Japan right?
@mrcoolr429 they are very rare in rural Japan where I am. You don't see SUVs or big trucks - they're just too big for the roads and parking spaces, etc. I'm sure you see the occasional American car in Osaka or Tokyo, but not in the inaka.
@myargonauts Thanks for the reply :) Yeah, $6.40 a gallon gas would keep most SUVs and trucks parked here at home. Lol. I enjoy your videos man thanks!
That's pretty cheap for gas. In Denmark, the price just hit 187 yen per liter.
Hmm, if i may ask. Are scooters speed-limited in Japan? Here, they are limited to 30 km/h or 45 if you got a drivers license. And only one person can ride them, but they are are very cheap to own.
I like your videos, haven't been subscribed for a long time though.
@Rokkiteer they are limited in that you can only drive one with a smallish motor (50cc I think) if you have a regular license - to dirve anything bigger, you have to get a special motorcycle licence. My scooter's top speed was about 30kmh.
atm i pay around £1.35 on average, and it was £1.19 a litre when i passed only last june, petrol prices in the UK are on a constant rise, it's expected to go up more during the coming months so i would probably enjoy the prices in Japan, and because i'm 18 i spend around £1500 a year on insurance(as part of my fathers) i'd be paying anywhere from £4000 plus a year on insurance if my dad wasn't a named driver.
@TheOneReesy one advantage of being old like me is cheaper insurance - and in Japan you also get a discount for being "continously insured" so if I hadn't gone home for a year between JET and now then my rate would be even lower.
@myargonauts we have something similar in the UK it's not continuous insurance but we get a no claims bonus, if we have had insurance for x amount of years and not claimed then it decreases on a year to year basis but its so expensive that when i leave home for university i wont be driving again for a year or 2 after my degree.
1. Awesome-- so you still do kendo? I have been out of practice for almost 2 years. :(
2. 500 series plate for the win!
3. I always wanted a Honda Fit
4. When I drove in Japan (at least in Tokyo) I got all confused by the crazy road markings/red pavement/triple-dashed lines/etc. Could you give a brief explanation of what these all mean, or better yet, is there a driver handbook in English?
5. I have no right to complain about gas prices in my area now.
handa is a good car they are really good on gas. i live here in the usa i use to have a hand but i got in to a crash in my first year of driving. like i tell my friend i really want to get a new hand. i have a toyota that car i am not to happy with it sucks when it comes to gass.
@TokyoNerd oh, there are definitely some narrow roads and sharp corners - which I will make a vlog about soon - so having a relatively small car like this one is a help - anything bigger would be more difficult to navigate around my small town
Whoa, you do kendo now?! Most awesome. Been meaning to get back to it. Or at least buy a shinai and redo all the usual routines and get back to fitness.
@corle1 well if you check out my "Jason does Kendo" vids on this channel, you'll see I'm quite the beginner, but I do enjoy it and I really enjoyed watching my students compete
thanks for the update. haha, Idont even have a liscence yet!
Still going crazy waiting for my interview results :/
If I bowed at the beginnig and the end at my interview because I sensed that the interviewers (all japanese) were reserved, is it frowned upon? Its been bugging me for the past threee weeks!
@KnightsofEmerald just a note - if you want to drive in Japan, you need to get your American / UK license at least 3 months before you leave to be a JET, so that would be by about April 20th, or you can't convert easily to a Japanese licence if you stay longer than one year in Japan
@KnightsofEmerald well in the uk one of them was japanese he bowed and offered his hand i tred to shake it but it was a weak handshake the other two also shaked by hand one was the jet the other also shook my hand considering your in the west shaking hands isnt bad i doubt they would all be japanese so the bow would possibly be over the top but thats just my opinion
As many times and years you have been to Japan, do you ever plan in the future to actually stay in Japan? However which way you could. Or is the program you do the only way you can live in Japan? Sorry for asking questions that has been probably asked before. Aside, really nice car you have there. Many people don't have cars in Japan right? Well, alot of people just use bikes in city areas.
@x2x2B sure - I think I'll end up staying in Japan for a while this time if my uni job keeps going along smoothly, but trips back to the US will still happen pretty often too
Why not buy a Daihatsu Copen? Or an R34 Skyline? :3

@sonikku10 I haven't played kendo since moving back yet. You can get a JAF "rules of the road" book translated into English - cost it about 1000yen.

in europe it's called jazz
difference between standard-winter tires
winter tire is mae from softer rubber to gain more grip plus it's made so it wouldn't get snow stock in the tread
downside - they are wearing out 2 times faster (especially when there's no snow or water or its above 5 degrees celsius)
