  • I let you guys, means newbies, guess what first rappers used this break FIRST ??

  • Comment removed

  • Is this cypher beat rappers used?

  • The drummer is Clyde Stubblefield

  • Does anyone know what drum kit was used when recording this?

  • James Brown invented rap music! Give it up or turn it loose to the godfather!

  • This beat changed cultures all around the world!

  • Bad Meets Evil-Living Proof -_________________- everyone samples this

  • i could never get tired of this!

  • either the band was insanely high or they were genius could be both but either way great music

  • I need the 10 hours version

  • someone should sample this!!

  • @robbantheshit haha, this beat has been sampled a million times. Its inspired so many genres from Hip-hop to Rock. Its one of the most brilliant beats ever. This and the Amen Brother survive the ages.

  • @vortex755 i don't think you understand sarcasm ha :P

  • I know I can't be the only one who has freestyled to this.l

  • This beat is not of this world...

  • this featured in BET hip hop awards 2009 cypher

  • the best riddim everrrrrrrrrrrr

    dj the one......pease!

  • If James Brown (and Clyde Stubblefield, THE Funky Drummer) got paid every time this was sampled, they could pay off the national deficit.

  • Between Funky Drummer and This, I cant pick the better of the two. They are still the best break beats that made love to a track and produced funk we still hear in music 30 or 40 years later.

  • I have a question for everyone. Which beat is more ICONIC? The Funky Drummer or Impeach the President.......Food for thought

  • @sfantop As much burn as Impeach The President has gotten over the years and is still gettin', Funky Drummer is in its own lane. Greatest breakbeat EVER and that includes Apache, It's a New Day, Substittution (my number 2, actually 1B) and, yes Amen Brother.

  • @sfantop impeach the president has been used more....from biggie to whoever else you name.

  • @sfantop Great Question. Funky Drummer. The drumline is to Iconic.

  • Now I'm gonna close with some food for thought/If you ain't hip to Hip Hop's history, then Hip Hop YOU'RE not/No matter how many times/You rhyme of cars, and bling/Broads, baggin' bricks, and other sinister things/No matter how much cheddar you rhyme about stackin'/No matter how many women you keep claimin' you mackin'/No matter how many times you rhyme/'Bout heat that you packin'/Then rhyme 'bout all the folks you fatally attackin'/Or how many keys you pushin' and bringin'/

  • Sublime samples this for scarlet begonias.

  • love it...

  • This is a good rhythm.

  • Uhm.... Isn't this beat the Amen break slowed down somewhat... I don't know, but check out the YouTube video that is a documentary on the Amen Break and you tell me. Just do a search for Amen Break documentary.

Still amazing to listen to, but I just thought everyone would be curious to find out where it came from.

  • @stefanojazzman eh uhm no its not you moron

  • @stefanojazzman No, there is more than one sample for drum beats. The Funky Drummer is a separate sample that also follows the same general pattern.

  • Play this video in the background while watching ANY other video on YouTube for eXtreme awesomeness.

  • One person is deaf.

  • @the8thangel More like 1 person has no soul! :)

  • I sampled this myself for my beat called "ride".

  • Ain't it funky!? Oh yeah!

  • In an ideal world, this would play whenever I walked down the street.

  • @TroyConvers5000 That would be the ILLEST theme music.

  • @TroyConvers5000 hehe; you can , just have it playing in your mind

  • 1 person siting in the corner at parties... with one drumstick.

  • the internet and mixtapes have created a great era in hip hop right now...turn off your radio delete itunes stop being force feed garbage....bandcamp is a great place to start...the smokingsection too.

  • I person had something in it's eyes and hit the wrong dislike button;)

  • what is he saying???

  • ooohhhh yes!!!!! This album cost me bucks in bluebird records, soho, but worth every penny.

  • As on me james Brown has outstripped the time

  • possibly the most best soul/hip hop beat ever!!

  • Ate a pumpkin

  • I instantly thought of scarlet begonias.... sublime edition

  • I could probably listen to this for about three hours straight.

  • @LibertyDUNN Wow, me too lol!

  • @LibertyDUNN Same my man

  • @LibertyDUNN that's right! only the same beat! over and over! sticky beat!

  • @LibertyDUNN me too

  • @LibertyDUNN no you couldn't, faggot.

  • @checkmatehelp looks like someone has abusive parents

  • This the reason I STILL play drums. Clyde is a personal friend of mine and it really sucks that he received little or no credit or royalties from all these hip hop groups and DJ's. "sampling" his beats.

  • @mat102965 i have to say, i've learned to love hip hop because of it's originality and novelty, because there was nothing like it before (conceptually and soundwise). The subject matters aren't really something that i identify with.

Having said that, i DO think firmly that the performers/creators of this break (and also of the the amen break, that would be the winstons) should recieve some kind of royalties for the relevance of their (unintended) contribution to the history of hip hop

  • This is the reason I played drums back in school

  • Best Beat

  • Best fuckin beat in the history (and future, for that matter) of Hip Hop. Period.

  • @StraightOuttaDC WORD IS BOND!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It's just called "The Funky Drummer", assholes!!! No other name...

  • @rclosure YYYYEEESSSSSS!!!!!!!!!

  • Fat back beats!!

  • I Love it. But to the souless clown who deleted the GODFATHER's interpretation

  • Ain't it Funky eh, ain't it funky eh?

  • it sure is funky!!!!!

  • Funky Baby Funky !!!

Here is possible to groove with the bass yo...

  • AINT IT FUNKY

  • I was just out walking the dog when this came on and I literally couldn't help but strut.

  • Is the NWA- Straight Outta Compton battery??? Seems the same

  • @100000Bitches no it's not

  • @100000Bitches amen break!!!!

  • @COMPACTASS1 Amen Brother by the Winstons is diffrent

  • @100000Bitches No that's actually another breakbeat, not as popular in hip-hop as this one, called something like the Hallelujah Break or something. That NWA sample was the foundation for the brits jungle, drum and bass stuff.

  • @100000Bitches It's called the Amen Break, not Hallelujah..lol

  • @cavaleer Amen Brother by the Winstons

  • Aint it funky? Yes soul brother it is! Love this beat cause it makes love to my soul.

  • James Brown new something before we did.....This was the egg to hip hop's sperm!!!

  • whats abouts amen beat ?

  • @ulydadon this beat formed the roots of hip hop, wheras the amen break formed the roots of jungle and drum and bass. Both are great.

  • Public Enemy - Bring the Noise Big Daddy Kane - Mortal Combat Slick Rick - The Moment I Feared Nas - Get Down Ice Cube - Jackin' 4 Beats N.W.A. - Fuck Tha Police Dr. Dre - Let Me Ride LL Cool J - Mama Said Knock You Out Redman - Rated R Eric B. & Rakim - Lyrics of Fury If I forgot some songs. Somebody extend the list.
  • @3rdbass618 Well, the list never ends, but its length goes WAY over YouTube's character limit for video comments. The dope drum break in "Funky Drummer" was sampled in so many hip-hop joints that it's hard to believe!

  • @3rdbass618 The Rhythm-Kwame' LL Cool J-The Boomin' System, Rebel without a Pause-Public Enemy Kenny G-G Bop (lol, its true) some song by the Fine Young Cannibals

  • @Tony1TAKE that would be FYC's "I'm Not The Man I Used To Be".

Incredibly it's also on "Baby Love Child" by Pizzicato Five

  • @zionravescene , this is sampled and looped for probably 500+ songs not just in the western world, but around the world from 1989 to 1994

  • @ivanmwpoon Nop, from 86

  • @3rdbass618 Lord Finesse Bad mutha

  • youtube.com/watch?v=jpJEmCK51W4

  • haha Dave Wise ripped this off sorta for DKC2

    search dkc2 funky theme

  • HI ROB

  • It's greatness, survives!

  • Public Enemy #1

  • Madonna's "Justify my love" samples Mr. Stumblefield's drum beat too

  • This is sampled in preety much every song ever made after it

  • i know DJ's would cut/mix the hell out of this back in the day.

  • AWESOME HIGH QUALITY !!!! , YEAHHHHHH !!! .

  • George Michael used a sample from this one on his own song called ´Waiting For That Day´

  • k-os used this for b boy stance!!

  • Aint it funky?

  • THE 'GROOVE BEAT' OF ALL TIME...period.

  • @pampdog lets not forget Amen brother. =]

  • this joint get me open when i hear it

  • @crunk617 lol u saw this on my feed? shyt tuff right? i been looking for this for a long time!

  • I thought Jabo was the funky drummer ??

  • Clyde

Stubblefield, the drummer behind the most famous breakbeat ever,

perhaps, and the title of the song from whence it came, James Brown's

Funky Drummer, apparently has appealed for financial support for medical

costs. If Clyde brought gave you some joy, and you have the means, now

...is your chance to give something back.

  • "Ain it fonky?"

    "Good gawd, HA!"

    "Haha, EEUUGH!"

    :P

Love ya James and Clyde for that tasty and revolutionary groove.

  • @AnnieReckshun LOL!

  • good god! hit me now! owwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

  • james and clyde made love to this and this bad ass baby was born....her name was hip hop!! then corporate america prostituted her and she died from aids........rap is just something being done....hip hop is something you live...

  • @getyoasshome WOW....okay. good analogy.

  • @getyoasshome damn u hit the nail on the head

  • @getyoasshome damn.. now that was real talk!!!

  • @getyoasshome If you're gonna quote KRS-1, at least give him a footnote.

  • @oakland2949 KRS said if you want to use one of his quotes or any of his video footage you dont have to give him any credit as long as you are using it to better the art...he said that on the alex jones DVD that came out.

  • @getyoasshome True, however, I'll add: Hip Hop originally goes back to the motherland/Graced griots, poets, drummers, and Africans in royal chants/Was murdered with the onslaught of the MA'AFA/But like the mighty phoenix, rose again from the slaughter/Reincarnated on american soil/With scat and jazz and bebop and poets loyal/Resurrected again inside West Indian shores/When Jamaicans started toasting dancehalls for sport/Reborn again a few decades later/--CONTINUED IN NEXT POST-->

  • @chj2 /From mics, and turntables of New York Originators/Another manifestation would come again/But this time, corporations took off with it and ran/Deceiving many with an age-old plot to rule/There plan must have worked, 'cause way too many are STILL FOOLED/Thinking what is given them is the real thing/But ask 'em about it's history, their brain's in a sling/Claimin' Hip Hop, but ain't aware of its origins/A one-dimensional mutation, that execs keep encouragin'/ --CONTINUED---

  • @chj2 oh yes without a doubt...even in todays crappy hip hop music you can hear jazz, funk etc...

  • back to basics BREAK...BEAT... Love it!

  • This Beat Is The Forefather Of Every Hip-Hop, Ever.

  • This is the handiwork of dance remixer Danny Krivkit ("Danny K") who created this exteneded edit of Clyde Stubblefield's solo on "Funky Drummer" for the In The Jungle Groove" compilation album.

  • It's great.

  • Comment removed

  • when i listen to james brown's music i feel so good to be black

  • Pure genius!

  • this is the bomb! the break of breaks

  • did he play that beat live for 3 mins exactly the same without fucking up once? fucking hell that is awesome

  • Clyde Stubblefield is the man. No question.

  • Who did not sample this is probably harder to answer than who did

  • it's also in "bring the noise" by publicenemy when he says "never badder than bad". Yeah I know we could go on for years naming what it's been sampled in lol

  • It was James Brown was set'n up Hip Hop wit' all the beats 'n breaks he came up wit'...it's crazy!!! It's like he was seein' anotha kinda music spawn'n from the oppress'd inner cities, 'n he "silently" add'd as much fuel to the fire as he possibly could, AND STILL MAKE GREAT FUNK/SOUL/R&B JAMS!!!

  • Funky...Funky...ow yea

  • I wonder whether that drummer knew he created a whole knew genre when he laid that down?

  • I've seen a picture of james brown sitting behind a drum set holding the sticks, surrounded by his band. I'm saying he created the drum beat, but I did see James at the drum set.

  • @rickames. Clyde Stubblefield did the drumming here.

  • yes its one of the most sampled song in hip hop history this vid only has 54,000 views its a shame people dont really know were hip hop really came from

  • @toastedbread0 Its a shame...not even som so called "experts" even mention this as a key factor in Hip Hop's growth and development...Just listen to it....its like a calm before the storm of Hip Hop and sick lyrics and with nasty punchlines lol..ITS HIP HOP

  • @toastedbread0 oooooo! they know!

  • early 70's Block parties In The Bronx as the Up - Rockers began to shock the house !

  • spit that knowledge dowg !

  • Great cover

  • Goddamnit, you can't not bob your head to this.

  • Who the hell would rate James Brown as anything but AWESOME?

  • I heard this was the most sampled beat ever, does anyone know if that is true?

  • Yes, making Clyde Stubblefield the most sampled artist ever... and he never got a dime!

  • Yeah from what I've heard and read it is one of the MOST SAMPLED songs ever.

  • same beat from Scarlet Begonies - Sublime. which was a cover of a Grateful Dead song

  • dam, i've tried so hard to play this beat, cause if you can play this, you can play almost any beat. I got the bass drum and snare down, but adding the hi-hat has been trouble.

  • I know! At this speed, it doesn't sound hard, but it actually is. Slow it down a little and I can play it though.

  • @MSISOAD i ca pla a simplified version of, basically i dont lift the hi-hat, i hit the bass on 1, the "and" of 3& 4, and i play the snare just like the guy does in this beat.

  • I think you mean you play the bass on the 1, then in the next measure, the 2 and the "and" of 3, but I get what you mean. I can't lift the hi-hat either.

  • Comment removed

  • IM 17 AND I LOVE IT

  • If god would play a drum pattern he would play this.

  • Sick.

  • perfetto

  • this has to be one of the most inferential beats of all time, paving the way for all modern day beats, let's look back for were it all came from

  • don;t forget the amen break. a entire genre was created just from the break in this track
