I remember my aunt made this one winter when I was visiting Korea many many many years ago when I was a little kid. She'd carry me on her back while I hold on to a ladle and a bowl, and we'd go out to the garden together to scoop some Sik Hye from a container she had stored outside to keep cold. It was really good!
if you have Korean or Asian store.. you can buy them easily.. if you don't have.. maybe online stores ... amazon will start to sell korean ingredients soon.. they are preparing now..
The thing is My sister is turning 21 on march, and she is IN LOVE with korean culture.

Wonderful! But, Aeri, may I know the reason for separating a little bit of the barley water and then recombining it with the majority of the barley water at a later time?
You mean... you don't pour all to your rice cooker..and add the leftover barley water later to the pan with the majority of the barley water ?? if that's your question.. it's because your rice cooker can't have all in it.. if it's big enough.. you can just add all to your rice cooker and keep it warm for about 3 hours.. if it's not what you are asking.. ask me again.. ^^
I just sent Youtube the link of your latest video for me... if that information is accepted, I can use your song, aeriskitchen.. but if it is not.. I have to think other ways.. :( and for your new song..I'm very excited to share that song with others in my future video, just we need a written document.. or something else.. to prove again ..that you approved me to use your song.. I will send you message later again..thank you so much. p.s I like your music always.. :)
@aeriskitchen oh i see.... i had the impression koreans and japanese both have the same new year day which is on the 1st of jan every year! i guess it was a bad misconception! sorry! :) happy new year to you too!! :D
Would you serve this drink after dinner with or as a dessert to finish a meal? Or is it usually served to accompany a meal? It looks like a very soothing drink. Thanks, Aeri.
It can be after dinner as a dessert... or when somebody visit between meal.. and you serve just snack.. or fruit..this drink is good to serve with other simple food not meal.. ^^
I have been looking for this recipe for a long time. This drink is always served at my local korean restaurant as a dessert drink. It tastes so delicious but I never knew what it was. I will try your recipe and looking forward to enjoy this drink at home.
I love sikhye! :D All the Korean restaurants here serve it to us for dessert if we order the all you can eat bbq xD haha but I'm pretty sure most of them aren't homemade. I have an old rice cooker so it doesn't have a timer =/
But I'm sure you can cook it on the stove for 3 hours on low heat?
Oh.. you can't cook on the stove.. even it's low heat.. it is too hot... it is not cooking.. it is more like...fermenting.. so you will need rice cooker keep warm function for this.. sorry..
Yay!! I'm so happy you did this tutorial! <3 Thank you so much! I had this once when I went to a Korean restaurant years ago and I fell in love with it. It has such a refreshing taste, and I never forgot it! Now I can make it at home ^_^ Thank you so much!!!
@aeriskitchen Hahaha! I have the same rice cooker! we've had it for about almost 8 years now. it's such a great rice cooker, isn't it?!? thank you for the shik-hae recipe! i <3 shik hae! although, my mom did mention once that a nursing mother shouldn't drink it because barley malt decreases milk.
What kind of rice cooker do you recommend? :) Thanks Aeri!

if you haven't tried this, do. don't get the ones that come in cans at the asian grocery store as the rice in them tends to taste like cardboard.
this is a very aromatic and mellow-ey sweet drink, enjoyable warm or cold. i used to eat huge pots and jars of them when my mother made them.
