What the hell is this even about?
Facebook is a social place, where you post things about your personal life to share with friends and family. Regardless to how I spend my weekends away from work, if a company turns me down for an interview because there's a picture of me drunk at a party last year on my Facebook, then they've got to get their priorities right. Facebook is not where you should go to look for potential employees as well as checking out applicants, this is ridiculous.

@xstefferzx It is ridiculous. However, the only person who loses out is the person who posts this kind of stuff. The company will find someone else who wants the job... they don't care if you find it morally right or wrong if they look you up.

@Kathryn285 There is such a thing as a privacy setting so you can only have your Facebook Friends see anything on your profile past your name and main picture. If anyone else wants to see anything else, they have to become your Facebook Friend to gain access. I know mines is private, so I don't have a problem with this.

And I am not arguing whether or not it is moral or good to look up a potential employee, or if the employee followes through with appropriate settings on their facebook account. It's about whether or not employers check out that person online. And they do.

I have a great idea what about employees searching their employers criminal background records. As employees we ought to know who we are working for. For example, take the recent BP Oil Spill incident. I would never work for BP Oil considering their lack of protective constraints with the environment. Someone needs to develop software so that employees can start checking up on employers. I don't want to work for a pedophile even if he is a C.E.O. of a company.

"Private"?? Companies hire consultants all the time - to train their employees how to "search" Facebook, even when they are set to private. There IS NO PRIVACY on the Internet!! Think you're safe because you don't allow your photos to be tagged? Companies and Universities are using face recognition software .... Hiring (and even interviewing) people is a gamble; if you are an employer, you are going to try to shift the bets in your favor as much as you can. I don't think it would be right to go mining for info that the person hasn't made public, but if it's myspace or facebook, it's fair game. Firing an already hired person with a good track record for something off-job is iffy...layoff perhaps.

facebook is not good for getting a job because facebok isn't made to make you look professional. facebook is a strictly a social network. and i would not bother the person about they're personal life. that is just annoying. so any manager who wants to have an interview and wants your facebook, that person is just wanting to find something bad about you and fire you in the long run.
